Knicks · Too bad we have no draft pick for the next draft..................... (page 1)

Knicks1969 @ 1/7/2016 10:07 AM
It appears that the next draft will be very solid. The LSU kid (Ben Simons) is a special talent; whoever ends up with the first pick will be a fool if he doesn't select that kid. He is big and strong, high IQ, a complete basketball player and at 6'10" is more of a PG then a PF. Some are even comparing him to Magic or Lebron. The Knicks will need to shore up the back court, but I can't see any scenario where that can be achieved by next season. I was hoping Early and Thanasis would be a lot farther ahead in their developments, but that is not the case. Somehow, some way, Phil has to find a PG and a SG to replace both the aging Calderon and Aflalo.

If Williams can be coached to become a more consistent player at both ends of the court, we might be able to count on him as Carmelo's replacement. That is a big IF.

If I were Phil, I would look to find a way to pry away Daunte Exum from Utah. He is injured and Utah appears to have way too many PGs on their roster at the moment. I don't know if it is possible, but Exum is the 6'6" type of guards Phil admires.

martin @ 1/7/2016 11:25 AM
With cap holds and increasing salary cap, etc, etc. the Knicks will have somewhere in the park of $19M to spend next offseason. Batum is a SG/SF type who shoots from distance, rebounds (6.5 rpg) and passes (5.2 apg) the ball. I'm not really good with looking up advanced stats but he seems like the perfect long term SG would like in the Triangle. Just turned 27, so lots of legs left in him.

Willy also comes over next year.

I am resigned to having Jose/Grant for PG next year, hopefully Grant will be starting next year some time.

Westbrook in 2017.

2017 Championship run year.

WaltLongmire @ 1/7/2016 11:40 AM
The better we do the less significant this draft is for us. Is the upcoming draft considered to be a deep one?

As Martin states, we have Hernangomez coming over next year (I assume), and my take on him is that he would have gone in the mid 20's in the upcoming draft. I remember reading somewhere that he might have been a late #1 this past year if not for his contract situation.

Hopefully Phil can buy a late pick from a team that wants to have more roster space or money for free agency.

The better we do, the less I think about losing the pick. Might feel differently, though, if we end up with a top 7 pick.

Another year of Calderon? Please shoot me! It is not a guaranty that Batum will come to NY; specifically, if his team is doing well. He is a nice player that I would love for the Knicks to acquire, but you know how well we've fared in the past:). Jonathon Simmons of the Spurs is a young SG that I think we should pursue. He is a freak of an athlete and can play at both ends of the court. I don't know what his contract situation looks like, but if that kid can be swayed away from the Spurs to the Knicks, it would be a steal.

It seems to me that the Knicks should be in a much improved situation going into next summer. I think Free Agents will look at coming here in a different light if this team continues to improve. That was the plan coming into this season and if they keep winning that should be the result they wanted. Simmons from the Spurs does seem like a player Phil would like.

so you think the spurs, one of the most well-run organizations in sports, are going to give up a player that they feel has a bright future? when is the last time they've lost a guy like that? has it even ever happened? let's be realistic here. also the jazz aren't giving up dante exum just because he's injured... they picked him 5th overall, LAST YEAR. you think they are just going to give him up? cmon man, have some realistic thoughts.

Here's my take on it.

There are ALWAYS good players out there . . . who aren't playing. ALWAYS.

Please don't disagree -- too many examples (Whiteside, etc).

Now . . . if you add the fact that we have NO competition for those kind of players that have specifically Triangle Culture skills . . . we can count on Phil Jackson to upgrade the roster without great draft picks.

Which is also convenient . . . because we ain't got none .

callmened @ 1/7/2016 1:00 PM
this yrs draft isnt that good. i think we got lucky

The natural response to this is then why limit yourself to Jonathon Simmons? Why not Klay Thompson?

Batum is the perfect long term SG for this team.

i think so, too. martin has been saying this for a while now. i think batum fits exactly what we're trying to do both offensively and defensively. it's also true that he's not going to be cheap and there's going to be a lot of teams after (namely the spurs i would guarantee it) so we'd probably have to really pony up the $$$. i think he's worth it though, you add him, solidfy the 2/3 spot and then hope to make a big splash the following offseason as well. we could legitimately have a lineup of: r.westbrook/batum/melo/kp/rolo in 2 years. THAT would be something.

But it's a bad draft to not be in, because we could potentially miss out on Ben Simmons.

same... the best part is its not silly. Phil has rebuilt this core in 2 years, the players are improving from within and a winning well run Knicks team is an attractive destination.

Ive mentioned Batum several times... I think he's a great fit as well and an excellent asset. Might need some good money to get him here but Im game.
