It appears that the next draft will be very solid. The LSU kid (Ben Simons) is a special talent; whoever ends up with the first pick will be a fool if he doesn't select that kid. He is big and strong, high IQ, a complete basketball player and at 6'10" is more of a PG then a PF. Some are even comparing him to Magic or Lebron. The Knicks will need to shore up the back court, but I can't see any scenario where that can be achieved by next season. I was hoping Early and Thanasis would be a lot farther ahead in their developments, but that is not the case. Somehow, some way, Phil has to find a PG and a SG to replace both the aging Calderon and Aflalo.
If Williams can be coached to become a more consistent player at both ends of the court, we might be able to count on him as Carmelo's replacement. That is a big IF.
If I were Phil, I would look to find a way to pry away Daunte Exum from Utah. He is injured and Utah appears to have way too many PGs on their roster at the moment. I don't know if it is possible, but Exum is the 6'6" type of guards Phil admires.

The better we do the less significant this draft is for us. Is the upcoming draft considered to be a deep one?
As Martin states, we have Hernangomez coming over next year (I assume), and my take on him is that he would have gone in the mid 20's in the upcoming draft. I remember reading somewhere that he might have been a late #1 this past year if not for his contract situation.
Hopefully Phil can buy a late pick from a team that wants to have more roster space or money for free agency.
The better we do, the less I think about losing the pick. Might feel differently, though, if we end up with a top 7 pick.

It seems to me that the Knicks should be in a much improved situation going into next summer. I think Free Agents will look at coming here in a different light if this team continues to improve. That was the plan coming into this season and if they keep winning that should be the result they wanted. Simmons from the Spurs does seem like a player Phil would like.

Please don't disagree -- too many examples (Whiteside, etc).
Now . . . if you add the fact that we have NO competition for those kind of players that have specifically Triangle Culture skills . . . we can count on Phil Jackson to upgrade the roster without great draft picks.

i think so, too. martin has been saying this for a while now. i think batum fits exactly what we're trying to do both offensively and defensively. it's also true that he's not going to be cheap and there's going to be a lot of teams after (namely the spurs i would guarantee it) so we'd probably have to really pony up the $$$. i think he's worth it though, you add him, solidfy the 2/3 spot and then hope to make a big splash the following offseason as well. we could legitimately have a lineup of: r.westbrook/batum/melo/kp/rolo in 2 years. THAT would be something.

same... the best part is its not silly. Phil has rebuilt this core in 2 years, the players are improving from within and a winning well run Knicks team is an attractive destination.
Ive mentioned Batum several times... I think he's a great fit as well and an excellent asset. Might need some good money to get him here but Im game.
Everyone knows im a big supporter of having draft picks. Not having a pick sucks especially since we gave it away for nothing. Im hoping phil can make a move similar to the hardaway deal and get us a late first rounder at least
