The other thing is as the knicks schematic get more difficult we have seen some players and team play take a step back, then evolve even further. Grant looks like he is mind phucked but perhaps that is because more is being asked of him. To bring in new players who might be way behind the learning curve is much harder than "hey, it can't hurt to demote Grant and let him Fly free in the dleague then bring him back to the disciplined structure".....Yes it can.

Good call, Whiteside and others get a years to make Briggs look good but Grant hits a major wall and seemingly not hurting the team and we should send him down. He might be on the cusp of breaking thru. That would be a shame.

I am confident the Bling 36 can see what is happening and prescribe what is needed.

Actually Whiteside got the chance to develop his game in the d league. Right now grants 16 minutes could be the difference between a playoff team and non playoff team. We can't afford to develop at the expense of winning right now????

Whiteside was working out in the YMCA before Miami called. On July 16, 2012, Whiteside was waived by the Sacramento Kings.[20]

"On December 14, 2012, Whiteside was acquired by the Sioux Falls Skyforce.[21] On January 4, 2013, Whiteside was traded to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in exchange for Damian Saunders.[22] After the D-League season, he joined Amchit Club in Lebanon.[23]

On May 26, 2013, Whiteside joined the Sichuan Blue Whales (NBL) in China. He played 27 games averaging 25.7 points (56.4% shooting), 16.6 rebounds, 5.1 blocks, and 1.4 steals per game. He was named Defensive Player of the Year, Center of the Year, and was selected to the All-NBL 1st Team. The Blue Whales went undefeated in the playoffs en route to the NBL Championship. Whiteside was awarded Finals MVP.[24][25]

In November 2013, Whiteside signed with Al Mouttahed Tripoli of the Lebanese Basketball League.[26] He was released in April 2014.[27] The next month, he joined the Jiangsu Tongxi of China, before leaving them in June after 17 games.[28]"

Not the most conventional path but his 7 feet and crazy athletics has given him opportunities. Don't get me wrong Briggs, you spotted his ability early and were correct and obviously something else was missing from his game. Call it maturity and he was young enough to get another chance.

Quite frankly I'd rather develop him, and hold Dwilliams to a high standard and have him play the right way than win a few more games and squeak into the playoffs. With no pick this year its important we develop our toots. Remember our 2nd unit was better than our starters but they "got it". The bench is slower to come around.

If the potential is there i'd rather the team stick to "doing it the right way" then just making the playoffs and then getting bounced. If they can get it together with substance they could be dangerous first round opponent. Just my opinion. IM long term oriented.

Phil sees Grant as a Ron Harper type for the bulls. Grant has the same defensive potential due to his long arms and instincts. ....

If it was up to Briggs .....Fisher wouldve been fired too, b4 he was able to turn this team around. I'm just glad we now have a smart management staff led by Phil, who doesn't listen to the media and make emaiotional moves after every other tweek

fishmike @ 1/11/2016 10:07 AM
Grant is learning. Jose and Fisher are teaching. I am comfortable with where we are in this process. I have seen enough of Grant play to be patient. He's not playing well... I get it. Lets see more than half a season. It may be simply that he needs a whole year to take that jump. Watching this coaching staff I am comfortable with how this player will be developed.
mreinman @ 1/11/2016 10:34 AM
will be funny if grant becomes a really good player and briggs bumps hidden "briggs loved grant - scouting thread"
nyknickzingis @ 1/11/2016 11:23 AM
We just got to use Galloway at backup PG in moments where Grant is off. I like Grant's defense and ability to drive, He isn't playing major minutes. But at some point we need to give Calderon/Lopez/Afflalo more rest. They're being worked hard. The backups just aren't carrying the load outside of Thomas/DWill - who ironically play the same position of our 2 strongest players (Melo, KP). So we need to get creative with things. Maybe slide Galloway to 1 more often, and maybe use Thomas/DWill for longer stretches. We saw some of that last night. I'd like to keep Lopez, Afflalo and Calderon at 28-30 minutes a night. Lopez can play more but he's such a high motor guy you can see often he's fatigued.

This is one of the reason I'm in favor of trading for a veteran backup SG even. Move Galloway to backup PG. I do believe in Grant's potential, but more for the longrun.

i agree with this. I actually think he's being spotted at appropriate points now, so there's less pressure on him and hopefully his confidence comes back. He can certainly contribute when the game slows down for him a bit (and it would be great if LT gives him some tips on shooting; i.e., do whatever LT did over the summer)

I dont believe it will hurt if we add another guard like Frdette or Toure on the roster while Grant is still growing.

I'm down for an Atkins 10 day contract.

That's the "guy" you are talking about...right?

How will it help?

Nine-man rotation is pretty set.

Nothing wrong with quality depth. Spurs, CAVS n Warriors have deep teams.

Good job Briggs for putting yourself out there with this thread. Looks like you will be eating your words for sometime. But I'm sure your come back will say, it's only one game. What a fan! You will save face by simply saying you jumped the gun on this one. Grant is actually a keeper. He has the PG size Phil Jackson likes. And he can play both guard positions. This team needs Grant more than you think.
gunsnewing @ 1/13/2016 2:24 AM
been a rough month for Briggs
earthmansurfer @ 1/13/2016 2:34 AM
Grant with the MONSTER game and 4th quarter. What a corner he finally turned and has been turning the last 2 weeks or so. We saw this coming, well not this much, but we saw something coming.

23 mins, 16 points, 5-6 fg, 1-1 3pter, 8 assists a steal and a block, just 1 rebound.
And this is with Melo out and KP out quite a bit.

Jees I'm not rooting against my own team and it is only 1 game. I think he could've used developmental time and I think we will see real quick he still does. I hope not but well see

GoNyGoNyGo @ 1/13/2016 7:48 AM
It is only one game but the bigger issue is that he needs to be in the NBA and learn from professionals and veterans and his PG coach. He has the basic skills needed all he needs to improve on is the mental part. That is why he should be in NYC not Westchester. Learning from Calderon, Fisher, Melo and others is going to help him more than getting time beating up on the NBDL.

To get better you must play against the best.

Nalod @ 1/13/2016 7:57 AM
Not sure players going in the Dleague get the consistency. They can tear it up and then what?

They have been playing grant all along and it must have been because the coach's see he is close to pushing thru.
Consistency is born from being inconsistant. Development is done from assimilating at the higher level.

There are many paths and its just briggs offering an opinion and rooting for the kid. Lets be happy for Grants play. Its not like Briggs kept the kid down in any way!

I think Grant had a good start of the year, has shown flashes of being a good player. I think he lost a bit of confidence, and he's shown signs of getting over that and realizing he belongs in the NBA.

I only caught part of the game last night, but I thought the best play he made was at the end of the game, Celtics needing to foul and rather than play 'conservative' & dumb and allow them to foul him, he found D Williams under the basket with a fantastic, court long pass for a dunk.

We have not had that kind of play made by a PG since pretty much I've been rooting for the Knicks since Hubie Brown.

Grant played well in summer league.....he started declining when the coach wasn't giving him consistent minutes. Grant is the type that needs minutes to increase his own confidence and he wasn't getting that. We all knew his shooting needs work but he has so many other tools in his tool box that we could use. KP came in with confidence because the coaches gave him a starter role from the beginning. ....

chicken and egg

Grant was playing very poorly... how long do you stick with a rookie PG that is hurting your team for the sake of development? And lets be honest.. KP and Grant are not the same level on the totem pole. KP was drafted to be a cornerstone player. Grant was just adding to the talent pool. There are different levels of commitment there by the team no?

That being said Grant is one of my fav players. I was so pumped when we drafted him and never stopped believing he will be a good NBA player. The only question was how much time it would take. Its one game.. a BIG game, but still only one. With no Melo we really need guys to step up tonight... hopefully Grant follows this with a big game.
