Knicks · Willy and trading for bigs (page 1)

I know 7ppg and 4rebs doesnt jump out at you, but Willy Hernangomez is playing as well as possible for Real Madrid. Its very tough for young guys to get minutes over there and his production has been very similar to what KP did.

However Willy's per 36 minute stats are eye popping: 17ppg, 11.5rebs, 2blocks and .680 FG%

He's 21 and would be 22 this may.

I would have to assume that Phil treats bringing him over as our 2016 rookie being that we have no pick. I also have to assume that while it is premature to heavily factor him into future plans that he certainly might hesitate to aquire a young frontcourt prospect considering Willy and the current glut.

Food for thought.

We can't overlook what he is doing in limiting minutes among grown men, just as KP did.

He may not be the most athletic, but I think him and KP have a very good and complimentary future together.
Think the triangle is going to be great for his skill set.
Think he will be playing or us next year.

Thats the question. I read playing for Real Madrid was his childhood hope and dream. That being said KP was also his best buddy last year at Sevilla and I would think seeing KP's success and how he's handled NY might be a nice sway (NBA dollars dont hurt either).

Phil compared him to Scola.

I read the same thing about his dream being to pay for Real Madrid. Also, does he become eligible to get paid more if he waits a few years before he comes over(Saric in Philly)? I am hoping he comes over next year.

He has the potential to be a very good role player, which is great.

hmmm sounds interesting- so hes basically going to replace our OQuinn or Seraphin.....

any chance you know if hes an outside shooter because i have not heard anything as he just looks like a postup player....but knowing the Spanish bigs he should, no?

Not sure he takes many Js beyond the foul line, but I've seen some midrange jump shots in his highlight vids.

This is from the DraftExpress scouting report last May:

Though he only made 33% of the 40 jump shots he attempted this season, Hernangomez also has some upside as a shooter. He shot 72% from the line this season and the touch he flashes away from the rim could allow him to become a serviceable midrange shooter and pick and pop threat down the rim.

More of a blue collar interior player...and much more at ease in the post than Porzingis, despite the fact that he's shorter.

I'm looking forward to seeing him with us next year...hope he decides to come overseas.

I was gonna start a thread about Hermangomez today but when i tried to find some recent video of him playing in some games i couldn't find anything from this season so if anyone knows how or where to find some game tape from him this season then can you please post it on here so we can check him out??

He actually does have some good athleticism for his size. What i found today mostly talked about him needing help on the defensive end, it didn't say he was bad it just said he needed some work.

KP just tweeted how glad he is that Willy is playing so well and hopes he joins the Knicks next year.

I thought it was a stroke of genius to go get KP's front court buddy given how well they got along and played off each other. Willys seems like the prototypical Phil type of guy. Smarts and Hustle.

EnySpree @ 2/1/2016 7:58 PM
Willy is definitely a pipeline player for us. Next season he could very well step right into the backup big roll.

I would add the d league guys we have, along with that french kid we drafted a few years back with Indianas second round pick. All candidates to make the team in the near future.

nyknickzingis @ 2/1/2016 8:04 PM
Man totally forgot we had this guy.
Maybe he comes over next year. What a draft by Phil/Gaines. They picked up some major talent from what I can tell. Not only KP, but I am high on Grant's ability to impact a game as well after a few years of experience.
reub @ 2/1/2016 8:20 PM
Can KP also campaign for us to get Durant?

Would love to see it happen - just can't see Durant come to a team that misses the playoffs. I think we're much improved and have a future and Durant makes this team go 50+ wins right away, but he'd be hard pressed to be convinced that he would be on the most talented or ready team to win a ring next year. Which if he leaves, I think he would want to be on. Sort of like how Lebron left or Bosh, or even Aldridge. He may really like Fish, and really feel KP is going to be an outstanding player, but he's smart enough to know KP's prime is 2 years away (atleast) and that he wants to win a ring immediately. If we somehow make the playoffs (which to me looks like a long shot) I think our chances go up a wee bit.

There's lots of rumors that he's going to the Lakers and Westbrook is gonna follow him there the following year.
