Knicks · Would Portland Let CJ McCullom Go In Free Agency? (page 1)

Defense aside, the guy might be the best triangle-capable PG in the league. Can we make a realistic run for him when he hits the market?

I figured that to be the case. We should've tried to make a move for him years ago, when the Blazers hardly played him. Use to suggest we make a 3 way trade with the Celtics and Blazers involving Amar'e. Amare would go to Boston as an expirer; we'd get the extra year of Gerald Wallace's contract, Keith Bogans' non-gauranteed deal, Victor Favareni, CJ McCullom, Thomas Robinson and possibly Will Barton; Portland would get Brandon Bass. I felt with Portland in win-now mode and lacking scorers off the bench, would jump at that opportunity since their young guys hardly got any playing time. And yeah, we'd have to deal with Gerald Wallace's contract/play but he could've easily been stretched with us suffering just a $3-$4 million hit. That would've meant no Kevin Seraphin this offseason.....and I would've been fine with that.

As a PG how deep into the playoffs can he take you? Would you take him over Rose?

Seriously??

I'm confused with the "cone on" and "seriously" comments.... signing a cj mccullom is beneath you guys? Or is Mike Conley your one true love?
ChuckBuck @ 2/24/2016 10:21 AM
At this point beggars can't be choosers. We've been settling for bottom barrel broken down point guards (Duhon, Toney Douglas, Bibby, BDiddy, Felton, Calderon) that any decent point guard in the top 15 to top 20 range is an immediate upgrade.

We seriously can't be picky at this point...any of these guys would suffice.

Cause Portland is gonna let him walk as much as the Knicks gonna let KP walk?

You think they'd match a contract that approaches the max?

Yes. Of course they would.

File this under whatever rock we put the "Golden State might not want to pay Draymond Green" threads some started last year at this time.

Short answer: yeah. The East ain't that deep, our front court is pretty good and CJ is good enough. I'd be making the move for the future, however.

You match a playe that was core to a title run. Not sure if the same applies for a guy that could be a one-hit wonder on a fringe playoff team. Make no mistake, there is a significnt gamble that comes with this move.

They're rebuilding and they have one of the best backcourts in the league.

And bad contracts can tank any rebuild. If we approach that max, I'm skeptical the Blazers would match.

The would have a better chance going after Crabbe and even that would be a stretch.

Yeah but how come we can't file Conley under the "he played his whole career in Memphis and they live him out there". There's always a possibility with anything. Maybe Portland is broke and would rather let him walk than go over the luxury tax. Wasn't that the genius behind all the deadline trades?

CJ is a fan favorite in Portland. He's a diamond in the rough, who alongside Lillard has made them into a playoffs team that just blew out the Warriors in a season they were predicted to win 20 games.

It's a guard-driven league. Portland got a gift. There is zero point zero chance they let him go.

Well it seems like it would be pretty obvious that my Seriously has nothing to do with how good CJ is cause the kid is a beast and i'd love to have him, my Seriously had to do with the question of the thread which is if Portland would let him go in free agency which is a ridiculous question cause there's no way in hellz that any team would let a player like CJ walk in free agency.

You do know CJ Mccullom was a #10 overall pick? Hardly a diamond in the rough. You can make the same argument with Conley. Yeah Conley is unrestricted but like I said, Portland could cry broke. It's very possible.
