Amare at his absolute peak was a top 3 player with Phoenix.
Amare. Was dominant and was a Robert Horry hip check of Steve Nash away from making the NBA Finals.

Amare never had a prime. He was entering his prime as a Knick.
Prime Melo is better, Amare has always been a lazy clown that never rebounded at the level he should have given his athleticism, never played a lick of defense, and never learned how to be anything other than a black hole selfish player on offense. Amare is the poster child of coasting by on athleticism without ever actually learning to play the right way.

both have been vastly overrated. thinking in terms of "better" should be substituted with "less bad."

you can't think of stoudemire without using the n word, meaning nash.
melo was playing his best ball this season for about 30 games or so. took him about ten-twelve games for the light switch to go on. then he got hurt january 12th-- his 38th game. that's 25-30 awesome and mvp worthy play from him.
that's 25 games where he has played the right way, and brilliantly.
you see my dilemma? ha
Melo has been consistently better for longer.
Amar'e's best season was probably his first with NY, but he couldn't even keep it going for a full season. Otherwise a lot of his greatness seemed like a side effect of Steve Nash.
At their absolute peaks if I had one game I had to win, I'd probably go with Melo. Unless peak Steve Nash was on my team, too.
Short memory or perhaps forgetful fans? Amare Stoudemire was "the cog" in the 2004 Phoenix team that won 62 games and also went to 3 WCF when it was hard to get anywhere in that division. He lead them in WS 3 times in their run. Its NOT close Amare>Carmelo and if anyone has evidence to proof otherwise Id like to hear it. The Suns were as good or better better than the 90s Knicks let alone the Denver Nuggets?????
as much as i think melo was great in his PRIME, amare was AMAZING. yes nash was a big part of it but he also played well here with ray donuts felton. dude later developed a post game.

Amar'e missed almost two full seasons in those years though. I really don't think you can separate Amar'e from Nash, either. Nash won MVP twice and is one of the top ten point guards of all time... possibly top 5.
Nash to Amar'e is like Stockton to Malone... really hard to separate the two.

Amare Stoudemire came straight out of High school to the NBA to win the rookie of the year, plus take Marbury, Penny n Marion to the playoffs, and winning the first 2 games of a series vs the championship Spurs .. giving Duncan all kinds of problems throughout the series.
When Melo was a rookie, Melo had a healthy Camby as C/F that gave u a double-double 2 block night, plus a young healthy center name Nene, also a leaping Birdman in the rotation those 3 big-men took care of the boards n paint. Plus Melo had a quick pass-first PG CJ Watson to pass Melo the ball to shoot shoot shoot.

well Amare started off with a cast of Marion and pre-psycho Marbury which isnt that bad at all.
both melo and stat were great from jump.
With 5 seconds left in the game, if you needed someone to shake off a single or double team, starting from anywhere on the court to hit the winning shot, I would pick Melo. Stat would be limited as to where he could catch the ball to be effective, not Melo. He was money in those situations in his prime.

When Nash teamed up with Amare their first 4 years together Shawn Marion (Matrix) won the most minutes plated in the league 3 years straight with them .. Marion was the on n off court Leader of the Suns team.

You dont remember Amare getting the ball at the elbow and doing whatever he wanted for a score? Maybe you are too young or liked soccer at the time? Just for record--Carmelo has been with the Knicks in NON playoff basketball for 5 years--how many big late game shots did he have when it really didnt matter anyway? Amare was carrying Lakers team against MONSTER C and PF of the west. I remember watching Amare right before he got hurt the first time and saying this guy cannot be stopped and he was only 22. And despite numerous devastating injuries he was still was good
