Knicks · Melo Mentoring KP (page 1)

crzymdups @ 4/5/2016 8:59 PM

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Carmelo Anthony is feeling great and said he wants to play the Knicks’ final four games, including Wednesday night against the Charlotte Hornets.

“I’m good. I’m good,” said Anthony, who sat out Sunday night’s 92-87 loss to the Pacers just to get some rest. “I’ll play Wednesday, Friday, Sunday and probably Tuesday. We’ll see about Tuesday, but I’ll probably play the rest of the games.”

One player who likely won’t be back for Wednesday night’s game is Kristaps Porzingis. The 7-3 rookie had said on Sunday that he was hoping to return before the end of the season. Porzingis, who has a strained right shoulder, did not practice with the team or talk with reporters Tuesday. Interim coach Kurt Rambis said he was doubtful for the game.

Porzingis and Anthony apparently have had some pretty intense conversations while sitting on the bench, including during Sunday night’s game against the Pacers.

“Sometimes throughout the course of the game, it’s a running conversation. Sometimes he has a question: ‘What you think about this, what you think about that?’ ” Anthony said. “I give my input. Obviously he accepts it because he keeps coming back for the advice and the input. I’m more than welcome to sit there and talk to him. What we have is not forced, it’s organic. I try not to force it, he tries not to force it. It just comes naturally.”

No one can say with any certainty how much longer Anthony will be the mentor. While Porzingis is the future of the team, there has been speculation that Anthony may waive his no-trade clause this summer if he decides he doesn’t want to be a part of the Knicks’ rebuild.

Anthony, who will miss the playoffs for the third straight season, said he does feel some sense of accomplishment this season, considering he is coming off knee surgery that sidelined him for a chunk of last season. Anthony, who missed 42 games last season, has missed only nine in 2015-16.

“I feel good. Just to know that I didn’t really know what to expect this year as far as being able to play the whole season and play as many games as I’ve played,” he said. “For the most part I feel good I was able to do that. I actually got better over the last two months. I got stronger.”

This, to me, is a reason to NOT trade Melo.

We aren't gonna win a championship with Melo, but he can help develop KP into a true superstar. By KP's 5th or 6th year, he can be ready to win.

Look at how Anthony Davis's development has stalled in New Orleans. Look how that team has stalled.

Rebuilding isn't easy and it isn't a sure bet.

Melo is a pretty sure bet for the next few years and he's helping KP.

This is why I think it makes the most sense to keep him and focus on trying to develop the back court via free agency this off-season. Don't trade any picks - get good young players in the draft in 2017, 2018, and beyond.

But this is a very strong reason to keep Melo in the fold to me.

KP says he wants him! I mean this kid is obviously getting something out of the relationship. I see no pressing reason to want to move Melo at this point. Might as well sit back and let this thing simmer. KP will benefit from not having to have all the attention on him as he develops. Before Melo Tripped on the Ref, they were all looking pretty good. This can be better next year and the year after that IMO.

its not up to the knicks if Melo is traded...its up to Melo. THerefore, if he gets traded its cuz he WANTED to be. you can always tell KP "hey we tried to keep him happy but he wanted to go"

True. But it sorta seems like Melo also wants to stay.

I posted this for the crowd here who claims there is no reason to keep Melo.

I think it will have to do with how they do in Free Agency this summer. If they get someone good, Melo will stick it out. How good is the question. If they get Brandon Jennings and Courtney Lee... is that enough? Who knows.

If they don't get a good haul in FA, I think he might try to get traded to LA Clippers either over the summer or at next season's trade deadline.

We'll see. There's not a huge rush on this - no real need to panic.

Also, Begley tweeted that Melo doesn't need to rehab his knee daily anymore and that he isn't experiencing soreness.

i agree with you bro. great example with new orleans and anthony davis - not having another superstar, let alone a couple really quality vets there has really stalled davis' progression. look at the sixers, they actually put elton brand on the bench as assistant just so the team had some veteran leadership for their young guys. melo is still a good player, we're not going to get a whole lot for him in trade, kp respects the hell out of him, i see no reason to trade him, unless of course we're blown away by an offer.

don't you think it's a little different when it's coming from a guy like carmelo anthony? it's not like melo sucks. sure, we all wish there different parts of his game that were better, but he can still score 50 any night and has actually gave an effort defensively and was a willing passer this year.

Yes. Melo played very good/smart ball this year but he is still old and expensive. Why not get assets for him while we can?

i dont disagree with that sentiment, that's why i said, if we're blown away by an offer then make the trade. i don't think we're going to get assets for him. i don't think anyone is giving up a whole lot for melo at this point in his career

then the decision is easy. However, if a team is a melo type piece away, you never know. I think that a team like Boston would give up a lot for him. Look how much they were willing to give Charlotte for their pick.
