didn't the rockets fire JVG?
Great move for Minny. All that talent and now a good coach to help it all come together.

They have a habit of getting rid of players then bringing them back. JVG supposedly on good terms with the rockets owner and more and still lives in Houston.

He was assistant GM with the Spurs...
yeah but for 3 years.. its not like he put that team together or even drafted kawahi...

He was a really bad GM, but being part of the Spurs organization is a get out of jail free card. Just going through the motions there and being a "yes man" in that organization was bound to get him a new opportunity at some point. If he's an assistant GM for any other team (maybe with exception to golden state) he never gets interviewed for a GM job again.
Other than the Shandon Anderson and Howard Eisley contracts, I think a lot of what Layden gets blamed for in NY were actually Dolan's call. Camby trade. Ewing trade. Sprewell trade. All Dolan.
Yeah, I'd go so far as to say I don't think you can really judge any of the GMs/Presidents under Dolan. It's not an environment where anyone can thrive. If Phil has full authority, then the comment applies only to the ones before him, though.
Trading Ewing, Camby, Sprewell away wasn't really the issue though. We got a couple of picks back from the Ewing deal. Layden turned those picks into trash. Even of Dolan wanted Camby out. Y did we give up a lotto pick and Camby for Dice? We could have gotten a Lott puck for Camby alone or a decent player for Camby alone. And an allstar for the lotto pick alone.
Yeah, and Layden signs those 100millin dollar checks. Dice was all Dolan.
Layden has done well everywhere but here. Layden was to be the basketball guy and Dolan meddled.
Then when he was cleaning up the contracts Isiah came in and wiped it out.
Story was Layden was not in favor of Marbury trade. Dolan wanted it. You all know the story.
Y'all think Layden just gonna keep getting those Eisleys and Shandons and goofy laugh thru life. NO, the dude was very smart and had done well scouting in Utah.
Instead of letting guys grow into the jobs Dolan comes in and asks his GM's to do things. Its their job to please their boss.
What in any reading has anyone done that would make a good argument in his tenure in Indy building some very good teams suddenly lose his mind and sign Amare as he did?
The knicks made Larry Brown look like a tool as well. Can't judge anyones tenure here.

THink about that statement, and your thoughts on PHil Jax.

I have. Jackson's desperation to prove the triangle and only choosing a triangle coach has nothing to do with Dolan. A Dolan move would be to force him to hire Thibs.
Layden was known for a lot more than the terrible Camby trade... He also gave huge money to Eisley and Shandon Anderson that hamstrung the organization for years. He is also the idiot behind the Patrick Ewing trade that got us stuck with Glen Rice.
The only reason Scott Layden even has a basketball job in the first place is nepotism. The guy should have absolutely nothing to do with Basketball but he keeps getting to run things only because of who his father was. He is a first rate loser and I will enjoy watching Minnesota's demise after they built up a good core...
crzymdups wrote:WaltLongmire wrote:Mucho dinero...
That is a ton of money. Still less than Phil's deal to only be President and don't forget we gave Fisher $20M
"we"?
dolan gave fisher that money. has nothing to do with the cap. this is something "we" can laugh about because it's dolan's money
yeah i HATE layden. at least he will be under thibidaux in the pecking order.

Allan Houston, Clarence Weatherspoon.... Wth man don't sugar coat that idiots time here
Dolan did the Allan Houston deal.
Innnnnteresting.
Sounds like maybe Brooks to Washington.
Wonder if that impacts the Kevin Durant sweepstakes this summer? I could see it. Durant loved Brooks, from DC.
Ewing demanded a trade.
Nepotism still scouted for the Jazz.
They were bad times, but "Blame", unless you go back and look at which each decision had to be made with the information available is just an exercise to lash out.
There was lots of blame to go around. For what its worth, Isiah only made it worse.

Layden had been here for a year, he became GM after the 99 draft (which Ed Tapscott notably punted taking Freddie Weis over Ron Artest). I still believe the Ewing trade was Dolan's doing. And, yes, Ewing asked for a trade, but he was pushed to that point.
On September 20, the Knicks GM Scott Layden traded veteran, all-star, and team captain center Patrick Ewing to the Seattle SuperSonics in a four-team deal that saw back-up center Chris Dudley and the Knicks 2001 first-round draft pick go to the Phoenix Suns, in return for forwards Glen Rice & Lazaro Borrell, guard Vernon Maxwell, centers Luc Longley, Travis Knight, Vladimir Stepania, a 2001 first-round draft pick from the Los Angeles Lakers, a 2002 first-round draft pick from the Seattle SuperSonics, and two 2001 second-round draft picks. Rice played in 75 games, averaging 12 points-per-game for New York before being traded to Houston. Knight appeared in 126 games over three seasons, averaging less than 9 minutes per-game. Longley played in 25 games for the Knicks averaging 2 points and 2.6 rebounds, while Borrell, Maxwell, & Stepania never saw action for the team. Ewing's production had decreased due to age and chronic injury over the past few seasons, and team brass felt that a deal was in the best interest of the future of the organization.

Please don't forget the Weiss draft pick. Layden's bum a$$ was in Europe basically on vacation leading up to that draft and when a reporter asked him about a young guy named A'mare making noise leading up to the draft Layden said "Who". Layden was a horrible, horrible GM and created the hole that Isiah dug deeper. He is trash and only gets jobs because of the networks his fathers legend has earned him.
Nene and Camby for Dyess? Ruined the best night of the year and set the team back for at least half a decade. All character second round team with horrible contracts. Not sure who suggested Dolan was behind his moves but the guy went after his former second rounders and gave them a ton of money.
I'll be surprised if JvG goes to the Rockets. Um, I can't see JVG coaching Howard and Harden. Maybe Houston wants to clean house and reboot but I'm not sure they have assets right now to do that without a mucho headaches all around. JvG did a fine job, especially considering what he had to work with--continuously injured Ming and McGrady and assorted spare parts--and so, yeah, Houston might end up offering him the job but I can't see him taking it. I wouldn't have been too surprised if he had landed with the Timberwolves but Houston's a long shot. IMO.
