The expectation for last year was 30 something games, everyone said we wouldn't make the playoffs EVERY media piece said no team goes from our record the year before to the playoffs. We achieved exactly what was expected, but for some reason the media has gone into meltdown mode.

But who's to say Phil sees any value in having a 33 year old Melo on the Knicks?? Are you forgetting that he has a NTC and there's nothing we can do about it?? I'm sure you've been paying attention to everything Phil has been doing and how a lot of the stuff he's been saying and doing looks like he's trying to anger Melo into waiving that NTC so maybe Phil doesn't see any value in having a 33 year old Melo but as of now nothing can be done about it.

Also agree w above comments to a point. I think Phil is actually forcing a situation w melo. You're either completely committed to this process or you're not, and if you're not you should waive and move on. As a coach he often had these confrontations w star players, Kobe being the most recent. He didn't kiss their asses and they now respect him for it because they now realize stuff like that brought them championships.

I want to say that at some level this happens to all teams. If your team wins and keeps winning, coach's voice carries longer.
I remember reading articles in the 80's where it was said that even Riley's voice was being tuned out.
Is Pop just freakin fantastic? Seems like these days coaches are about on a 3-5 year timeline, if that.

This is why the average tenure in the NBA is so short. "Concern" is also the assumption that all things good and bad transfer to the new team.
Blatt and Lebron did not get along for many reasons, but not because of Blatts acumen. Lebron has clashed with all of his coach's but that's his nature and while he can be difficult, he gets you to the finals and beyond what the team is capable of.
Pop has not won every year and his players have bought into him big time. The trio of Manu, Parker and Duncan have played the most games, and won the most games as any trio of players in the history of the game.
Is it because Pop is amazing? Its in part because the cuture in SAS is bigger than anyone player. Duncan took a big pay cut to promote the cuture. They have choosen to be part of something bigger.
Remember when George hill Started in the playoffs over Tony Parker a few years back? Pop was very hard on Parker and he could have requested a trade. After all, Parker also was never paid top dollar was he was a free agent. In fact, Duncan went to bat for him and got him a deal. Parker reacted to improve his game and instead of leaving, he stayed and bought in. Pop in response trusted him and further galvanized the culture. Not everything in SAS went smooth or according to plan but you have to look at the buy in the players and the response by management.
This is what Phil is being paid the big money. This is what he missed in Chicago and in LA when Jimmy Buss took over. Knicks are trying to build a culture. Bird's culture in Indy thinks the players have tuned out Vogel. That is not right or wrong, its part of his decision making. Should it be a concern in NY? not really, in fact, if you read Phil's books he will tell you he had teams tune him out and he failed to reach them or keep them motivated. It happens.
