Knicks · Typical reactionary front office move: 48 hours after firing their coach, Memphis already has six coaching candidates lined up (page 3)

He owns a home in Montana. They have phones, computers and jet service if need be. Do you need a tracking device and a "phil cam" so you can see what he does or is not?
Do you think that some how the knicks are in a state of emergency and he should be in MSG to orchestrate a round the clock coaching operation?

I am fascinated by the presumptive behavior you depict Phil to be disengaged with. Since Rambis is not your apparent choice, you are making assumptions based on Media stories and filling in the gaps as if you have some knowledge about Phil, what he is doing, what he is thinking and who he talks to.

With all that your connecting the dots as "Negligence".

Find me a single voice anywhere who thinks hiring Rambis is a good idea?

Here are the top results for a twitter search of "Rambis":

I employ the freedom to think for myself. Its liberating.
Anger is an emotion and I won't let media, tweets, or bloggers create it in me. That's not to say I don't have an opinion, but If Phil wants a pure chain of command to do what he wants I get his decision.
You might not agree, but making stuff up about his activity from media outlets and filling what you dont' know with conjecture is hardly objective at any level.
In fact, the more ignorant ranting with little substance objecting to Rambis I read, the more swayed I am that it might be the right move! Why? Cuz guys like you want what already happened. That is not the clear path to success. There is no clear path.
While Phil came here with great fanfare and optimism the cold reality of what needed to be done must be very disappointing to some. If you interpret that all things must pan out, or you must agree with otherwise phil is dissing you ("Suck My D**K"), Then there is little to debate with you.

We have talked in length that Rambis failure in Minny was understandable. His record this past season as one who got the gig after a 1-10 stretch tells me there was some big problems on the team.
Does he "deserve" an opportunity? In a world where good results should, Rambis has also been a player and assistant on some very successful teams. That you over look. He has been a part of more winning than blatt or vogel.

Can he succeed? Maybe. Maybe he is seen as a transitional type who can help grow the team and then in 3 years hopefully the roster is ready for a new voice. He gets kicked upstairs and new coach promoted from within.

Not the starphucyh you might have hoped for, but that's sometimes how it can go.

I'm not exasperated. I'm sorry if I am being annoying.

Though I actually think that Phil's vacation may be to come to terms with the fact that he can't possibly hire Rambis as coach of the team.

I guess we'll see. I'm gonna take a break until the coach is named. Or try to at least.

Dude - I am kinda on board with your line of thinking.

But, I'm wondering if his vacay is really about him mulling a return to the bench?

His tweet about the last stand - maybe it means nothing. But this is definitely his last stand, likely, as a exec with professional sports.

Maybe he is giving serious thought to stepping down?

I wondered that, too. He certainly looked completely exhausted in that photo. I do think he probably got a lot of pushback from Dolan and Mills and Melo about the idea of hiring Rambis. I guess we will see eventually.

Depends. We were 500 at one point.

I thought we had maybe not amazing talent, but perhaps gritty talent like our Don Chaney Knicks who won 37 games.

Yes Melo got hurt, and we hit a tough part of the schedule- but there was more going on behind the scenes than maybe we realize which contributed to our collapse.

Mind Experiment: Replace Fisher at the start of this year with any coach with a proven track record of success - Thibodeau, Vogel or whomever. Do we still collapse? We we win more games? Do we get better development of some of our players like D Will, Grant, KOQ?

We may not make the play offs, but I'd argue that we'd have won more games and likely not collapsed in the same epic fashion.

Without a good coach, how can we really tell if we have talent? Or if we just have players that look good based on their physical attributes?

Now, I'm of the mind that we're years out from being competitive, and the focus should be on losing so I can nab a top draft pick and develop young talent (e.g., let Grant et al play through mistakes).

So, having a coach with a track record is less important.

I honestly think if we had Vogel from the beginning of this season, with Rambis helping on offense... I think we win 40+ games with the exact same roster. Maybe we needed an extra guard or two throughout the season, but I think the roster had enough talent to be a playoffs team. We beat teams like Charlotte, Atlanta, Detroit, Celtics (all playoffs teams) convincingly throughout the season. I think the Knicks talent was on par with those teams and coached right could have had a similar record. Obviously the Melo injury and the Lance injury set us back... but the complete implosion? You didn't see that happen in Memphis when they lost Marc Gasol and Mike Conley. You didn't see that happen in Indiana last season when they lost Paul George.

Same. I think his original plan was to install Rambis and have the Triangle be his legacy in NY... but things don't always work out like you intend. I don't think Dolan, Mills, Melo are on board with Rambis and all three of those guys will be in NY longer than Phil.

Throughout the year I've stood by his plain words of "I will not return to the bench" and fairly solidly thought this would be etched in stone. But I've been rethinking that of late, and perhaps the 2 day coaching session was a test of sorts for Phil. It was also reported that he has lost a lot of weight, perhaps that is good mojo on his physical health?

There is no doubt that Phil needs to have a backup plan in place for his exit from the bench if this were the case. Is it after a few months? Training camp? Half season? Whole season? What are the repercussions of a team that doesn't do well? Can he leave a bench that is overachieving? And who is taking over? If he and Blatt hit it off, perhaps the prolonged lapse in time is he and Blatt working the nuances of this over.

OR. Or Phil could have found a most delicious delivery from Colorado that he's burning through.

Going to Montana to ones luxury home is not the same as flying hundreds of thousands of miles, bus rides, hotels, etc.
How does one equate one with the other? You do realize:

Home in Montana is not the same as 41 road trips to 29 cities? Flying out after games, erratic sleep, practice, Media, coaching meetings, video etc, all while on the road? With a bad back, knee and hip?
That's coaching.
visiting your Home in Montana is Taking a flight, then drive to the house. Sleep, walk, perhaps if need be do conference calls if business is needed, got that video conf. thing now, computers, phones, and unless they are camped out at his gate, the media won't know if he has meet with any coach unless they tell them. we learned he met with Blatt AFTER the fact. Some of y'all were not in the know.

What the knicks are doing is very different than any other franchise I can think of. Perhaps only Red Auerbach after coaching became the defacto last word for the Celtics and was able to draft players to suite his system.

One assumes Phil is in the fetal position having a personality crisis and a meltdown after reading those tweets.

I did wonder if the 2 day triangle thing, coupled with the weight loss was a chance for him to try himself out and see if he's up to coaching. It would also explain the timing of his vacation- going away for a week just to ponder if he's making the right decision.

Personally I don't really see the point- we're not close enough to competing to make it worthwhile.

I think if Phil coached and the team got some quality guards this team could easily be a 50 win team. Who else in the East is even a good team, past the Cavs? The East is wide open. Atlanta is dismantling itself. Boston still lacks a real star who can win them games in crunch time. Pacers are retooling. Detroit is on the rise, but not there yet. Orlando might be good? Charlotte doesn't have any real skill in their front court. Toronto is a pretender and might be losing DeRozan. Heat have Wade and Bosh aging out. East is wide open. Knicks, with a good coach and some good signings, could be second best in the conference.

Competing? Competing for what? Championship, definitely not. Playoffs? I can see playoffs. Even Fish, who played Lou Amundson minutes for some reason, had a learning KP, post-surgery Melo still figuring legs out, rehabbing AA after missing first 8 games, Rolo who was put in a position of actually being included in offense, Jose who was coming off of previous year injury.. even after all of that, the team was 22-22 in January. It was no doubt a East coast heavy opponent list but still, .500 is almost good enough for playoffs in the East.

But, is the goal of Phil coaching the playoffs? Or is it to set the team straight, get a new coach up to snuff, win games and then attract free agents in 2017?

If that's the end goal, with the extra benefit of having him as coach and attracting 1 or 2 guards in the offseason, well the possibilities of next year's FA class become more attractive for the Knicks, and then Phil's goals are complete.
