New York Knicks Work Out NBA Draft Prospect Sterling Gibbs
by Maxwell Ogden 3 days ago Follow @MaxwellOgden

The New York Knicks worked out 2016 NBA Draft prospect Sterling Gibbs. What does the former Connecticut Huskies and Seton Hall Pirates star have to offer?

The New York Knicks are reportedly interested in purchasing a 2016 NBA Draft pick. Thus, it comes as no surprise that, with the annual selection process looming, the Knicks are beginning to do their homework on available prospects.

According to Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv, the Knicks will work out former Connecticut Huskies and Seton Hall Pirates guard Sterling Gibbs.

Gibbs isn’t on many draft radars, but he could be an interesting acquisition in the latter part of the second round.

The New Jersey native made his mark on college basketball as one of the best 3-point shooters in the country. He struggled to finish against length, and wasn’t much of a shot creator, but he could shoot the lights out.

He made 75 3-point field goals on 43.6 percent shooting from beyond the arc in 2014-15, and converted 79 at a clip of 38.7 percent in 2015-16.

Due to Gibbs’ low profile on the NBA Draft scene, it’s possible that the Knicks could sign him as an undrafted free agent. Thus, this could merely be a look at whom New York can bring to training camp.

That doesn’t make it any less significant.

A season ago, the likes of Travis Trice and Darion Atkins were brought on board in that same manner. The duo went on to spend the 2015-16 season with New York’s D-League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks.

The same approach could be taken with Gibbs.

Gibbs, who stands at 6’2″ and 185 pounds, took great care of the ball despite having a significant measure of freedom to roam the court. He averaged just 1.6 turnovers per game during his four-year career, and flashed the potential to become a secondary or tertiary facilitator.

He’s not the most efficient player from within the 3-point line, but his body type and strengths are comparable to current Knicks guard Langston Galloway.

Phil Jackson may or may not bring Gibbs on board, but it’s nice to see New York doing its due diligence with the 2016 NBA Draft.

I saw Sterling Gibbs 35 times this year--hes no NBA player.

Most UDFA aren't NBA pleyers

Do it Knicks, lets go. Brooklyn!

Isaiah Whitehead has several fans in the Knicks organization, including star forward Carmelo Anthony. Whitehead has worked out with Anthony at the Knicks star's Terminal 23 gym in Manhattan. Anthony came away from the workouts impressed with the Seton Hall guard, according to people in the gym. Whitehead also worked out for the Knicks on Saturday at their training facility in Tarrytown. At 6-5, Whitehead has the kind of size that Phil Jackson coveted in his backcourt during his coaching days with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. Oftentimes, the Knicks have to consider how a potential prospect will handle life in New York. That doesn't seem like it would be an issue for Whitehead. The 21-year-old thrived at Coney Island's Lincoln High School, winning a city championship at Madison Square Garden; he also was named MVP of the 2016 Big East Tournament at MSG, helping Seton Hall stun eventual national champion Villanova in the title game. By all accounts, Whitehead is well-mannered and well-liked by teammates. The Knicks, who plan to acquire a draft pick, may have to trade to a spot in the late first round to land Whitehead.

edit: never mind, he probably doesn't fit in phil's eyes. I think Isa could be a steal though.

Isaiah Whitehead hasn't formally signed with an agent, but the Seton Hall sophomore guard says he's "100 percent" gone if he gets a promise to be chosen in the first round of next month's NBA Draft.

"Oh yeah, 100 percent," Whitehead said Thursday at the NBA Draft Combine after going for 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting with 5 assists, 3 rebounds and no turnovers in a 109-69 victory. "You can't give up opportunities like that. I mean, when they tell you it's time to go, you just gotta go."

He added to SNY.tv: "And anybody at Seton Hall would have to agree with me. When they tell you that you're a first-round pick, you can't turn that down."

The Brooklyn native is currently projected as the No. 65 best prospect in 2016 by DraftExpress.com, and as the No. 35 pick in 2017, but he's hoping to impress here at the Combine.

wh4t wrote:It says my boy Whitehead was the only one to meet with Allan Houston. He's perfect as a point guard to me. I hope Knicks choose him and stash him in Weschester because he still needs a little bit of improvement. He has the most upside in that list. I hope the Knicks get 2 of those guys like they did with Cleanthony and Thanasis.

Gbinije & Whitehead, do it phil

bulls and celtics keeping a close eye on whitehead. they know deal. i could see him going to the bulls which can be a steal. celtics has too many guards but they're very much interested

wh4t wrote:Whitehead has more upside. He's ambidextrous and handles the ball very well. Keeps his head up with good court vision and a great passer with good point guard playmaking abilities. He's a shooter but i agree that he still needs a lot of improvement and being efficient. He also needs to work on his turnovers too. He attacks the rim and his free throw attempts shows that. He's a great defender with a wingspan of nearly 6'9''. His wingspan is longer than Galloway & Grant and is a better defender than them. He can also carry a team because Seton Hall was off the radar for while until Whitehead showed up. I think he should stay one more year to develop and have the same effect like Kris Dunn did. He can definitely be a top 10 prospect if decides to play one more year.

This kid isn't supposed to be drafted but pre-acl tear he was loosely compared to Kawhi Leonard (14-15) when the Kentucky players were compared to nba players (i.e. Cauley-Stein=Tyson)
CrushAlot @ 6/11/2016 9:10 PM
Polythress didn't participate in the draft combine because his acl isn't fully healed.

Perhaps he felt more confident at this time and was willing to workout for the Knicks. Similar to Wroten the issue is mainly one of building up muscle and strength in the ACL repaired leg and it's mostly a matter of time and hard work. It's amazing how many players are now recovering fully from ACL's compared to the old days.

I googled him after I saw that he worked out with the Knicks. He worked out for the Sixers and reportedly did well.

Poythress is a huge under achiever that nevr lived up to the hype. He is nowhere near Draymond. He is not even Terrance Jones

I don't know but I doubt UK fans would compare him. As a UF fan, I do not even remember him mentioned on boards as a real threat.

You should really start using the IMO when you say things like that because you can't predict what he'll be in the NBA. You and we all can guess on what we've seen in games or on the computer but you don't know.

Indiana guard Yogi Ferrell continues to impress in workouts around the league. He shot the ball well in sessions last week with the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks, per several people familiar with the workouts. Ferrell, a 6-foot PG, worked out for the Knicks on Friday alongside Kansas' Perry Ellis and for Brooklyn earlier in the week. The Knicks don't have a draft pick but are expected to acquire one. The club has worked out several prospects in recent days at the practice facility, with an emphasis on the triangle offense. For what it's worth, both Ferrell and Ellis are projected as second-round picks; Ferrell may be helping his draft stock with his strong shooting performances.

Oh didn't UF just win another National Championship in Track the other day while FSU placed 64th?

UF > the school out west
