Phil has made a deal that really has no major downside. Rose balls out and we win, GREAT! Rose falters and we move on, GREAT! Cap space in a great FA market and our picks as well. There's really no way to lose. Also it's possible that FA's will be much more impressed with coming to the Knicks with Rose, KP and Melo on board. It starts to look like a monster team if you add a top FA to this group. I think it's a good move.
We just got rid of about $22 million with Rolo, Calderon and Grant and brought in about the same amount with Rose and J.Holiday so we now have our PG for next season at least and still have $30+ million to spend.
We can now sign Pau Gasol or A.Horford or D.Howard and still have money for a SG and there's our starting 5.

yeah i agree, this all about what JH wants, and he want a up and own pace, and some you forget, but when we started out the season running and gunning, and winning, Loepz was on the bench in the 4th quarter

Face the truth once in ur life .. we just made another backward move keeping us as a 32 win or less team next season, while helping the Butler Chicago Bulls make the playoff next season without ball-hogger Rose.
Noah n Gasol may want to resign now that the so-called franchise player is gone.
Rose is a FA next year so he's going to play and he did play 66 games last year which is only 8 games less than Melo played last year. If it works out great but if it doesn't we're no worse off. Lopez is easily replaceable and if things do work out and we somehow make the playoffs we may wind up netting Westbrook next year.
Listening to the radio on the way home from work you'd think we traded Porzingis! Someone tweeted we just broke up out BIG 3! LOL

the bigger issue is what this move does to melo's no-trade. the message is clear: no way the knicks get any closer to being a contender next season, which is now essentially a throw-away season. the message, once again, is "we are building a team for life beyond melo as the centerpiece." melo will not take this move well.
also, rose plays ZERO defense and will not co-exist with melo by any stretch, let alone poor kp6, who won't see the ball as much as he should... or needs to.
rose is a salary dump but by that point melo will be very very long in the tooth.

this is my thinking too. ANd if ROse balls out we're in the best position. We will know more about him as a player, health, and I believe we could offer him more money if he plays crazy good, right?

Naw, I go further back when Hornacek were a Suns player, when the backcourt tandem Hornacek n Johnson beat the Lakers Magic Johnson in a series, then Suns traded Hornacek to 76ers for Barkley, plus Hornacek were coach Sloan missing piece to take Stocton/Malone to the FINALS ... Coach Hornacek doubled Dragic n Bledsoe worth plus the value worth of the rotation to only watch the Suns organization trade them for profit

Trading Rolo = a complete 360 on what we've worked on for the last 2 years. What guarantee do we have that Phil is going to get it right now?
I'm not sure I understand your thought process. The point is to make moves when you have something of value. RoLo played very well and so we used him to get Rose on a one year deal. Not only did we improve the balance of the team but there's no real long term risk involved. This move for Rose could also lead to signing another top FA this summer and putting together a really good team. Remember we still have the ability to make a big play in FA. This is just the beginning of the process!!!
I'm willing to bet we could have traded Rolo to Boston for a number 1 pick and nothing more. And kept Grant and gotten similar production from him that we'll get from Rose - and I'm factoring in we may only get 40 games if we're lucky from Rose, and Grant could likely go 70+.
