Knicks · So Austin Rivers is our new combo guard (HOPEFULLY) (page 3)
Uptown wrote:I would def take a shot on Rivers...He is a combo guard that type that thrived under Hornecek in Pho...Rivers can also back up Rose....not to mention. He is young, and i feel like he never got a real shot to see his full potential .
Well said. Feel the same way.
Welpee wrote:I honestly never paid much attention to Rivers since he hadn't lived up to expectations after getting drafted, but the more I learn about him the more I like him. Same. Well said. I agree.
Curious why the Knicks haven't looked into Jarrett Jack. He was making 6mm and I assume would be a lot cheaper, is the perfect veteran backup for Rose, and allows more $ to try and resign Lance Thomas.
Yes, he's coming off an injury, but he's not injury prone. He played 80 games in each of the 3 previous seasons.

Jose Calderon 2015-16 assist %: 34.6 (8th highest in league for qualifying PG)
Austin Rivers: 13.6 (75th in the league, 5th from the bottom for qualifiers)
Jose Calderon 2015-16 True Shooting PG: .571
Austin Rivers: .523
Rivers would need to DRAMATICALLY improve this shooting percentage to even be something of a wash with Jose Calderon (at least offensively).
And no, there is NO evidence Rivers pushes the ball, breaks down defenses and gets below the foul line.

ACL tear and 34, not a good combination

Is Rivers a good defender?
I think he'd need to be great to earn minutes.
He's a shooting guard that isn't a scorer and a point guard who isn't a passer.
He can maybe occupy some mins on the court without killing you, but has no particular stand out skill.

Can we please not compare a promising 23 year old to the worst starting pg in the nba, defense alone makes rivers better overall player hands down...
Everyone should be dancing a jig we finally threw out our garbage in a 34 year old has been who should retire

His shooting percentages don't suggest someone who finishes well. His FT attempts doesn't suggest someone who gets fouled much.
If he isn't getting fouled and he isn't converting baskets, what exactly is going on when he gets to the rim.
Someone with that ability shouldn't also be almost a non-entity as a passer either.

I'm not suggesting reacquiring Calderon, I'm glad he's gone.
That's the point. I'm putting River's skills in perspective.

Solomon Hill has been in the league 3 yrs and hasn't done much, yet he just signed a 4 yr 50 million dollar deal. Rivers can command somewhere in the Hill neighborhood. Perhaps a little less only because Hill is a legit SF...Rivers can get anywhere from 8-11 mil per.

Yes, but the point is the Knicks have immediate needs and only limited resources to do it. You don't spend a majority of the space you have left to fill a starting role on what you called a prospect.
He's a prospect/ they need a starter. The terms themselves makes the equation self-evident.

If we miss out on Lee, there really isn't a starting SG left on the market. I'm pushing for Rivers because he can fill 3 voids. He can start at the 2, he can back up Rose at point and he gives us that coveted young player to pair with KP. He's 23, a few months older than Grant and he's a better prospect IMO. If Lee is definitely out of the equation, I believe Rivers is better than whats left, its that simple.
