Knicks · I like Phil's Strategy (page 1)

Boom or Bust. If it works and they get into the playoffs and are relatively healthy during the playoffs then they could be a very scary team that could make noise. If the chemistry is terrible and guys are hurt all year and they lose then we add another top draft pick and try again the same thing the following year. If it works then they can possibly be a great team and if not then it would be an epic failure that nets them a top lottery pick. Rose,Gordon,Melo,KP,Noah has tremendous potential. Also, the key will be that they don't all get hurt at the same time. Rose and Gordon need to coordinate their injuries and make sure not to get hurt the same time!

If he signs Eric Gordon to more than 1 year its a horrible strategy..... Horrible

H1AND1 @ 7/1/2016 10:17 AM
Except Noah is a long term deal. So we're saddled with a bust if it goes in that direction. Dont know the parameters of the supposed Gordon deal but if it's more than 1 year that deal is a disaster. Gordon has literally _never_ been healthy. Blech. Signing Gordon longterm is a disaster IMO.

Rose is an expiring. So that's the only contract that fits into the boom or bust concept youre talking about.

Starphuck... no, starfukk...

Something like that.

I don't understand the negativity on these boards, although it seems to be coming from just a few select people.

There is no denying we are a better squad right now than we were last year. We weren't winning a chip this year no matter what happened this offseason (barring Durant signing and some other insane shit happening).

So why not put together as good a team as you can without risking too much future cap space? You take your best shot at getting KP some valuable playoff experience, with the upside of all these guys potentially having incredible bounce back seasons.

Assume for a second (I know it's a long shot) that Rose and Noah both have fantastic seasons and play 60+ games each, with the majority of the games missed being 2nd nights of back-to-backs or taking the 3rd game off in a 3-in-4 night stretch. You don't think Rose/Noah playing at their potential added in with dadMelo we saw last year and KP taking an additional step is a team that can do serious damage in the East? Who cares if we get bounced in the 2nd round, we weren't getting that far anyway and the future isn't mortgaged.

We don't know any official numbers for FA contracts yet either. Let's just chill out until we have all the facts and then make our judgments.

It will be interesting to see what year 4 of Noah's deal is. His deal goes longer than Melo's deal which is a bit surprising. If it is a team option with only a small guarantee his contract would essentially be a 3 yr contract.
ChuckBuck @ 7/1/2016 10:21 AM
Only Rose's contract is good. The rest is bad strategy. In the worrisome case that this team stays healthy and they make noise(40-45 wins), they won't have a good draft pick, probably pick 15 and out of the lottery.

Basically you'll be saddled with Noah and Gordon for multiple years and a mediocre ass team. Not sure how much cap space we'll have for next year's free agency bonanza with Rose's expiring off the books, but we're big time jeopardizing our future here.

djsunyc @ 7/1/2016 10:25 AM
at face value, phil:

swapped out lopez for noah.
gave up on his first round pick grant.
noah's deal offset any cap room the following 3 years from moving lopez + grant.
taking a 1 year gamble on rose.

Agreed.

Spend time on any NBA forum and you quickly realize some fans have a handful of players they actually like. Everyone else has flaws so if you pay them any kind of money fans reject the idea.

So you have fans who only want a handful of players on their terms. Give them anything else and they're unhappy.

And how is unhappiness expressed online... like it's the end of the world and someone is to blame.

'If only they just listened to me.'

This is typical.

wargames @ 7/1/2016 10:31 AM
I can live with all of it..... except Eric Gordon. Especially if Eric Gordon gets a long contract which due to the nature of his injuries of course he is going to require a few guaranteed years. They should take a flyer and try to get Joe Johnson before they agree to Eric Gordon..... Like I could understand them going for Eric Gordon if every other 2 guard was off the market..... but they are not. Courtney Lee is out there, Jamal Crawford, Lance Stephenson, a $hit ton of RFA 2 guards...... there is no reason for them to be going after Eric Gordon.
SkyWalker @ 7/1/2016 10:31 AM
First off, the Knicks probably HAVE to give Noah 4 years otherwise he would sign somewhere else. Why is it so crazy to think Noah can't give you a solid 4 years. Who knows what the salary cap will be in the 3rd and 4th years and maybe this deal is not a big deal at all. I would rather pay Noah 4-5 million extra than have Robin Lopez. Lopez was nice but I always loved Noah's game and the intensity he brings. He's such a great passer and would fit great. The guy missed most of last year with a separated shoulder. I'm not overly concerned with that. Mozgov getting what he is getting just makes me feel that much better about possible Noah deal. You can't even put Noah and Mozgov in the same sentence.
SupremeCommander @ 7/1/2016 10:32 AM
I don't know what else he could do... hopefully they can put together a cast of veterans who can play 20-25 games in case our starters go down. Build this team like the Kidd year team

The one positive is Gordon, like Rose, is only 27 years old. Lots of injuries, but plenty of players with early injury problems while not the same player, can have long, productive careers because the injuries lessened the mileage on their bodies.

I am not a huge fan of Gordon's... that said, Rose grew up with Gordon so I like that they will get on the same page quickly. Also, if you rotate Langston in, in theory, we got 3 guys who can dominate the lane. Some threepoint ability too. I didn't realize how good Gordon was from three recently. If this happens I am excited about the pace the Knicks should play and I'm really excited to see how it's going to make Melo and KP even more effective. This is a great recipe for Melo to play bully ball and that's when the Knicks are at their absolute best
