Knicks · Re-Sign Derrick Williams? (page 1)

tj23 @ 7/3/2016 9:07 AM
I've seen numerous posters and some sources say we can re-sign him. How is this possible when we outright signed him and had him for just one year? Any capologists? I'm down for paying him but didn't think it was possible.
Andrew @ 7/3/2016 9:28 AM
Can't really unless he takes as below market deal
GustavBahler @ 7/3/2016 9:30 AM
Williams would seem like a great fit in this system. Someone who can push the tempo and drain the occasional three. I will be disappointed if Phil doesn't make a push to get DWill signed.
nychamp @ 7/3/2016 9:35 AM
I'd like him back with this group. Not sure if it's possible though.
earthmansurfer @ 7/3/2016 9:39 AM
Yeah, I was wondering about any special rights to sign your own FA.
I wonder if him declining his option opened up (or closed) and doors to resigning him.
Anyone?
He would be HUGE off the bench for us.
nixluva @ 7/3/2016 9:43 AM
It's gonna be tough. In the end Phil can only do so much with the remaining cap space. The only option I see is a trade of KOQ to a team under the cap. Who knows if he has any takers out there. He's the one player they don't really need.

Unfortunately you don't get any rights to go over the cap if the player has only been with you a year. I think maybe you get early bird rights if they've been on your team 2 years, but I could be wrong.

I think you are right. I saw somewhere that the Knicks have early bird rights on Lance Thomas. I think they really need to bring Lance back if possible.

I think we have early bird rights on him and Galloway, the problem is it will eat into cap space for next year (where we really need the max if we're going to get rid of Rose)

Knickoftime @ 7/3/2016 11:15 AM
Knicks have non bird rights on him, which means they can give him a 20% raise from last year. Which I believe is actually the same as his cap hold (or close to it).

So if he'd agree to the deal, he'd get a raise and no, it would not in fact eat into next year's cap, other than the 4.5% raise he'd likely get in a multi-year deal (he could go 1+1 again, though).

If we dont keep them our team will have no depth. Williams really took a big step forward last year he might be a 6th man of the year candidate.

Hell yes

I think they are hoping he agrees to a JR hand shake deal, we'll pay you next year once we have your EB rights. There are just so many teams out there with money to burn that it I find it unlikely that Williams will not be picked up. Maybe his poor 3pt shooting is playing into the knicks hands.

Chandler @ 7/3/2016 2:09 PM
I would like him back. The fact that he hasn't been gobbled up yet gives me hope
Caseloads @ 7/3/2016 2:12 PM
Cap hold is how we can re-sign him. we can't match any deal (like a restricted) and can not go over the cap to match him
WOODMANnYk @ 7/3/2016 2:20 PM
I think we need to move on from Derrick williams and with the money we have availablr, sign a reliable backup pg that can run hornaceks new offense...

Affalo just signed a 2 yr 24mil deal.. What do you think Derrick williams going to get? More like minimum 10 mil per yr..

I'd like him back, and maybe that is enough- but seriously you would have to be a fool to turn down 4 years, $72m which seems like the new min type deal that is out there.

Kinda makes me think we're paying to much to watch the game...

4 years, 72 mil is NOT the new min type deal. That's for top 3 players.

Starters are getting 4 year/50 mil

EwingsGlass @ 7/4/2016 6:13 PM
I really want DWill back. What is it goink to take to get him back? He is becoming a fan favorite. Sign 1 more 1 and 1 contract so we can have early bird rights for him next year. He will make the extra 2m or so more than the Knicks can pay quickly.
CrushAlot @ 7/4/2016 6:14 PM
He would do great with Jennings/Rose. I think he would like to come back but the money maybe too good somewhere else.
