Knicks · Tim Duncan retires (page 1)

crzymdups @ 7/11/2016 10:05 AM

One of the greatest ever.

fishmike @ 7/11/2016 10:32 AM
was he a rookie that year Ewing went down and we played the Spurs short? Seems like eons ago...
WaltLongmire @ 7/11/2016 10:39 AM
...and how typical is it for the low key Duncan to shun the final year fanfare and adulation Kobe ate up and simply walk into the Texas sunset alone.

An old school throwback persona and player.

Arguable the best recent player for KP to emulate in terms of how an athlete should carry himself.

MaTT4281 @ 7/11/2016 10:43 AM
One of the very best and a class act all the while. You had a great run Tim!
crzymdups @ 7/11/2016 10:45 AM
Knixkik @ 7/11/2016 11:22 AM
Far and away the greatest player of his era/generation. The league will be odd without him.
DrAlphaeus @ 7/11/2016 11:39 AM
The Big Fundamental! One of the greats, no doubt. MVP of the last Finals the Knicks were in. I won't hold it against him.

Thanks Tim.

Thanks Tim.

Still think we would have won that series if Ewing didn't get injured vs Indiana the battle would have been a lot more equal.

Ewing camby vs drob and Duncan

It's a shame that didn't happen in the finals

arkrud @ 7/11/2016 11:51 AM
He is representing the era of basketball and it is over.
Our days NBA is more of reality show that sport.
Tim never belong to that. Good for him.

here's my top 15 as of now (and yes titles-- especially *leading* a team to titles-- is a significant factor in my opinion.)

1a)russell
1b)jordan
3)magic johnson
4a)bird
4b)lebron
6a)hakeem
6b)shaq
6c)duncan
7a)kareem
7b)chamberlain
8)robertson
9a)mo malone
9b)bryant
10a)dirk
10b)barkley

He was no Channing Frye, but Duncan was still a class act, who helped move the league forward after Jordan retired. Have fun Timmay!

That was Duncan's 2nd year. Spurs lost to Utah in the second round his rookie year.

I still hate VanGundy for starting Chris Dudley in that series. Talk about playing short; that was as close to playing 4 on 5 as you could get.

Nalod @ 7/11/2016 12:57 PM
Watched Georgia Tech with Marbles vs Timmy in the second of Timmy's ACC championships in 1996 back in the day when ACC was great and that championship was meaningful.
Nalod was in the Arena to watch this game. Man, 20 years!!!!

Holy shit - Duncan's career plus/minus is exactly +10,000

He out scored opponents by TEN THOUSAND POINTS for his career.

Interesting, solid list. Last year shooting the sh*t with friends I came up with my All Time Starting Five with positional/chemistry consideration and they are all right at the top of your list:

PG: Lebron, SG: Jordan, SF: Bird, PF: Duncan, C: Russell

2nd Team:

PG: Magic, SG: Kobe, SF: Dr J., PF: Barkley, C: Olajuwon

Seriously +10000 is GOAT material.

I'd go Kareem over Oljuwon but I like your list. Kareem was a great passer as well.

Perspective:

"Since drafting Duncan, the Spurs won five championships and posted a 1,072-438 regular season record, giving the team a .710 winning percentage, which is the best 19-year stretch in NBA history and was the best in all of the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB over the last 19 years."

Proof that tanking can have benefits, especially when an organization knows what is doing (vs. Hinkie).
