When it comes to his offensive game there is a lot of info that makes it seem like he's not effective anymore. I think the main issue is related mostly to his poor 3pt shooting on Pull Up 3's. He shot 28% on Pull Up 3's but 33% on Catch and Shoot 3's.
From NBA Sports Vu stats:
Rose averaged 8.9 Drives per game at 51.0%
Rose averaged 7 Pull Up Jumpers per game at 44.5%, 0.7 of those were 3pt shots at 28%, making his eFG% 45.9% which looks terrible but you have to keep in perspective that the 3pt shots are keeping his eFG% down. He doesn't take a lot of Pull Up 3pt shots tho.
Rose averaged 1.7 Catch and Shoot Jumpers per game at 33.6% of those 1.5 were from 3pt range at 33.0%, making his eFG% 48.3% on Catch and Shoot.
So what you are looking at is a player that looks a lot less efficient if you look at his overall shooting but the bulk of his game is not dominated by those inefficient shots.
Also Rose was an active PnR Ball Handler, which we will need in Hornacek's offense.

So Rose Drives at a high rate. Runs PnR at a high rate. Is reasonably efficient on his Pull Up Jumpers most of which are from 2pt range. What Rose needs to do is improve his 3pt shooting on Catch and shoot from 33% to about 36%, which IMO is very doable.
Defensively Rose will have to pick up it a LOT. He was very bad defensively. I have hope that playing with other very good defenders will help Rose along with a better commitment to defense.
The halfcourt ability of this team is much improved as is the ability to get on a break. Now what I have no idea about is defense. Yes Noah is a former DPOY and yes Rose is a big guard. But based on recent history, neither has shown great defense. Same with Jennings, not really a defensive player. You look at the Knicks last year, they had trouble on defense as the season progressed. Started off well, but as season went on, defense got worse. We got exposed for the big Lopez/Porzingis lineup at times, and also got exposed for Calderon/Afflalo backcourt on D. Major question for me is Rose/Lee going to be better than Calderon/Afflalo on D? What about Noah/Porzingis vs Lopez/Porzingis? I'm excited for the season. I'm not expecting miracles though. I see us 3-4 points a game better on offense. And likely a little better on D. I think that puts us in the 45 win range, depending on how good/bad the East is.
nyknickzingis wrote:Rose has two skills this team badly needed. One was to drive to the basket in a halfcourt setting. Other than Melo who has slowed down and is not really a PG anyway, last year no guard on our team could do this. It was quite easy for defenses to sit back and figure the Knicks guards would not attack, they would just shoot jumpshots, or pass inside. This year we have 2 guys that will make the defense think about what they're doing. The other thing is fastbreak or transition play. Rose can push the ball very well. We've got a team that is athletic enough and got enough energy guys that can run the floor real well. I know Noah runs the floor real well for a big. I think KP can as well. Melo has been told by Hornachek to work on getting to the wing ASAP on offense.Good Post. Rose will definetly help especially driving to the hoop. Obviously injuries for him and noah will always be a fear. I agree with your record prediction. Derrick is a better defender than what We had.
Derrick is a better driver than what We had.
He still more athletic than what We had.
He is on a contract year.
