Knicks · KG in negotiations to retire (page 1)

Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves are in advanced discussions on a buyout that is expected to end Garnett's second stint with the Wolves, according to league sources.

The belief in Minneapolis, sources told ESPN.com, is that Garnett, at age 40, will opt for retirement after 21 seasons in the NBA.

But the strongest signals Wednesday night pointed to Garnett and his representatives securing a settlement with the Wolves that will lead to his departure from the organization with one season and $8 million left on his current contract.

Drafted by the Wolves straight out of high school in 1995, Garnett was the face of the franchise for 12 seasons until his July 2007 trade to the Boston Celtics. He won a championship in his first season with the Celtics, moved to the Brooklyn Nets via trade in June 2013, then returned to Minnesota in February 2015, when then-Wolves coach Flip Saunders convinced Garnett to waive his no-trade clause to clinch the storybook reunion.

Garnett agreed to come back to the Wolves, sources say, in part because he hoped to join Saunders in eventually buying the franchise from longtime Wolves owner Glen Taylor. But Garnett lost his strongest ally in the organization when Saunders died just before the start of last season, only three months after it was announced Saunders had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Plagued by knee trouble, Garnett appeared in only 43 games over a season and a half in his second tour with the Wolves. But last season, he was an influential mentor to the Wolves' young players, particularly prized big man Karl-Anthony Towns, who won NBA Rookie of the Year honors.

Garnett is a 15-time All-Star who won league MVP honors in 2004 before leading the Saunders-coached Wolves to the Western Conference finals that season in what stands as the most successful campaign in franchise history.

The 6-foot-11 power forward was the fifth overall pick in the 1995 draft, launching a new era of stars who went directly from high school to the NBA. He has averaged 17.8 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 blocks for his career.

great player. Epic douche

It's funny how my loathing of Garnett is accompanied by a sort of respect for his great skillset. Too bad he wasn't a cool guy.

Congrats on retirement, KG - and screw you.

there should be nothing but pure admiration and respect for his greatness.
the knicks have had nobody close to this level since 1995.

Oakley and Mason didn't carry on the way KG does. It's one thing to be physical or talk trash. KG to it to the next level. Classless player on the court.

There would be a line. Its how it works, we opened our hearts for Spree and Marbury. Their reputations preceded them and they took it with them.
Talented yes, repugnant at the same time.

Melo was a punk, but he became our punk and matured. Now we have Derrick Rose.
Im all for giving a knick a chance. Winning helps.
As for KG, he was a bit looney toons and coo coo for them cocoa puffs but he had a great work ethic.

Key here is both KG and Duncan both retired this year and will likely share the stage for their HOF speech. If KG's remark to Duncan "Happy mothers day MOFO" in reference to Timmy losing his mom's to cancer then its a cruel Irony. Have to admire the intensity to win and willing to go deep into the stench where integrity does not exist but there are lines.
I hope in a private moment KG recognized himself and perhaps apologized for going dark on the passion.
Duncan exhibited a very different form of intensity and had more success both within the team and individually.

kg definitely has demons that come out in the heat of competition. not entirely forgivable either.

but nobody can question his elite conditioning, his ability to make others around him better, his playmaking, his dedication to his profession, his passion and intensity, and yes, even his leadership.

winning that one title-- what a great run they had that year-- really cements him as a top 15 player all-time.

The point is that with KG and his heart displayed on the court, as diehards we would have look passed anything and loved him unconditionally.

Look at Rose, he has not played a game yet and most are already trying hard to give him a pass for an alleged gang rape.

Kobe, Duncan, and KG will all share the HOF stage in 5 years as said on ESPN radio a couple days ago.

He likes to swim in the cesspool of stats and accolades so he probably wouldn't do that. KG was did not play the game in a respectable manner. I can give him a nod for his accomplishments but a douche is a douche.

I hate him as a prick opponent and would have loved him on my team pissing off other teams and players.

maybe you guys can be honest with yourselves one day as well.
