Kings' Matt Barnes and DeMarcus Cousins sued over alleged nightclub fight

Matt Barnes and DeMarcus Cousins were sued in federal court on Wednesday by two people who alleged they were assaulted by the Sacramento Kings players in a New York nightclub earlier this week.

Jasmine Besiso and Myrone Powell were at Avenue Nightclub early Monday morning when the alleged altercation with Cousins and Barnes took place in the club's VIP area, according to the lawsuit filed in United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

No criminal charges have been filed against the two players.

"Jasmine Besiso and Myrone Powell suffered severe personal injuries as a result of the intentional assaults and batteries by (the) defendants and were treated for same at Lenox Hill Hospital," attorney Michael Lamonsoff wrote in the filing.

Alex Spiro, the New York-based attorney who represents Barnes and Cousins, declined to comment when reached by USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday night. Lamonsoff did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

The lawsuit seeks more than $75,000, the minimum amount needed for it to be filed in federal court.

TMZ was first to report the lawsuit had been filed.

In the lawsuit, Besiso alleged Barnes approached her in the VIP area of the club and grabbed her "by the neck and began choking her," according to the lawsuit. Besiso claims she was then "intentionally elbowed in the face" after Barnes released his grip, knocking her unconscious.

Powell alleged in the lawsuit that when he tried to come to Besiso’s defense, he was punched by Cousins. Powell then claims he was punched and kicked "in the head, torso and lower body" after the two players tackled him to the floor.

Besiso and Powell sustained "serious injuries and to suffer pain, shock and mental anguish" and that the injuries "will be permanent," Lamonsoff wrote.

Barnes wrote on his Instagram account Monday that "there's always two sides of a story."

Sprio told USA TODAY Sports previously that his clients are cooperating with the New York police’s investigation.
