Knicks · Poor ball movement. No defense (page 1)
Too many forced shots, not enough open shots.
Jennnings in the beginning of the season was doing some great passing and had a better shot selection, I don't know what happened... now he runs around aimlessly it seems and forces most of his shots.
nixluva wrote:From what I saw it's not just one thing. Guys missing easy layups and makeable shots isn't about the PG. This team is out of sync defensively and offensively right now. They have to figure some things out but more than anything you can't win if you don't make shots and you don't stop anybody. That's not rocket science and you really aren't fixing that with a new PG.
This is a classic case of giving up good shots for better ones, and we just don't do it enough. The defensive effort its crazy wack, and it's like there isn't one player putting that extra effort to get over screens or close out on the 3 ball, It's a half ass effort. Teams with poor shooting percentages are lighting us up.
Houston will easily run through this defense
All this creates a house of cards which cannot stand for long. First wing and it is blown away.
Half-ass rebuilds never work. We keep patching this sinking ship but it keep sinking.
Knicks need to build new ship. We have some peaces, need to trade vets for more, let others expire and develop new team.
There is no other way and it takes years.

I get not liking the Noah contract but I am wondering how many rookies do you need to build the new ship. Is 5 not enough with three more on the way after the draft? Ten new players and a new coaching staff not enough of a rebuild? What is a fixable problem that you see and what is your timeline for calling a rebuild successful? With 5 rookies, 10 new players and a new coaching staff is 32 games the cut off for deciding if the guys brought in are going to work out?

I'm not saying rose is the problem....but he's also not the answer.

Give Paul the max and let Rose walk. Or play Paul and rose together....but Rose is not the lead guard melo needs. U cant have multiple high volume scorers on one team.I'm not saying rose is the problem....but he's also not the answer.
I really don't think that's the biggest issue tho. We've seen this team pass effectively and for some reason Jeff has them going Full Woodson right now. How many post ups did we see last night by KP and Melo??? Is that what Jeff was known for? Why has he abandoned his Uptempo, Spread and PnR Style???
This ISO POST UP style is how we played at the start of the year which I HATED!!!
Where are the hard screens to get guys open? Why has Jeff abandoned the use of Horns Sets and all the slick stuff he ran in PHX??? I seriously want to know.

Woodson knew he had an offensive minded team, and he found ways to max out that talent. Jeff is actually garbage as a coach and likely will not be here next season. Jeff needs a young team that will do things he wants, for the most part he has vets, inefficient ones. Not surprised by the results.

I believe the team and coached watched some tape and realized they missed KP in the post on those mis matches.....for example, when Rose and kp had the switch.....instead of looking for KP in the post with a guard on him, rose went into scoring mode and tried to drive.....he lost the ball and we lost the game. Rose doesn't see the floor like a true PG, and I can see Hornachek and staff stressing to look for the mis matches on those pick and rolls. That led to more iso post plays in the paint.
That's part of why hornacek changed his strategy.....also he sees the offensive tools melo has and believes melo one on one game is a good offensive strategy to explore, this is something he said to the media in the past.
I agree, they need to go back to run and gun basketball. The problem in half court is defense sags when rose has the ball, and we are not efficient enough from 3 to open up the court. We are not getting stops, so this minimizes our fast breaks and up and down style of play. A lack of defense forces hornacek into a triangle pick and roll half court style. We lack players that know how to make those passes....and we lack shooters at times so defense can help on those drives.

I agree 100%,I just feel like we have the talent but the effort and IQ just isn't there. I hate to go in on the coach already but, he is struggling a bit on getting the roster to play with a much better focus and playing hard 99% of the time.
When hornacek said (to the media)
Coach Jeff Hornacek spoke Tuesday, saying he does not feel the Knicks have moved the ball poorly and clearly indicating he believes some ball movement is overrated.“There are some teams that make six or seven passes and all they get to is the high pick-and-roll, so some of that is probably misleading,” he said at the Knicks practice facility before the team flew to Atlanta for a Wednesday game. “Yes, OK, it looked all right because the ball moved around. But they move it around and catch it at the top and someone goes up and sets the screen. So what’s the difference if you run right to it?”
But the knicks very rarely communicate on defense so they always fall short. They dont know weather to protect the paint or the 3. Thats straight lack of preparation..It's like they look at the opposing teams stat sheet, and go off of that.
They have to be VASTLY more efficient offensively in order to win. The recent losses were mostly about poor offense cuz they NEVER did play good D all year. They get some stops here and there but they win with their offense. This team has major flaws but the one thing that they can't survive is bad offensive games. They don't have the D to win that way.
nixluva wrote:Well it's gotta start with getting some stops. Then pushing the pace. If they can get stops then they can't blow layups and open shots like in the Pelicans game! Need more efficient scorers like Lee....who was out these two games.
More efficiency and less volume. Currently the main guys that provide offense are volume shooters. This is why Jeff continues to pressure Lee into shooting more, because he's our most efficient scorer, according to the stats. I'm sure holiday isn't far behind. But we have too many volume scorers.....and when they are off, we struggle.
Fools gold when ISO ball works and we win some games. I get caught up in it, too.
Players have to believe that if they move and get into position they will see the ball...especially if it is in the hands of a pg. We don't always see this.
Not sure if you need set plays, new sets, or new players.
I've taken a lot of shyte for being old school re KP, but the only time he should be going ISO, for the most part, is when he has position down low. Not sure whose decision it was, but he did not work on his upper body, and seemed to spend more time on beating someone off the dribble in isolation than taking a smaller defender down low. Either way, outside or inside, his dribbling should be limited before he takes his shot.
Not sure why we don't see Noah in the post more often. I know he's been up and down, but he is a good passer, and more likely to do something down low than on a high pick situation. I think Phil envisioned him as a big butt down low in the Triangle, but we are not running the offense anymore, from what I can see. If this is the case I would rather have KP play D at the 5 where he doesn't have to run around as much, perhaps make adjustments in certain games. This would mean much less playing time for Noah- not sure who I would start at the 4, but I think KP suffers on offense because he has to be too active on D in our scheme.
Not sure why Rose can't excel in the Triangle with his great midrange game instead of playing the hero ball we see him playing. This would make Noah more relevant, too.
Not sure where Anthony should be playing, but he is not a normal SF on D or on O, at this point.
Frustrating season, as we have shown some promise...unsure about how we should move forward...

Melo's lack of defined position is a problem, always has been since he has been here. This team really could use a SF that can play 30 minutes against some teams
