STOP LEAVING THE SHOOTERS OPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT THE FUCK!!!!

THEY KEEP GETTING CAUGHT IN THE PAINT HAVING TO RUN OUT TO THEIR MAN!!!!!

STOP DOING THAT!!!!

THE KNICKS ARE ONE OF THE BETTER SHOT BLOCKING TEAMS IN THE NBA!!!!! LET THE BIG MEN DO THEIR JOB COT DAMN IT!!!!!!!

Chandler @ 1/20/2017 8:25 AM
it is maddening. You want to sag (instead of press and deny), fine. But pretty fundamental that you still need to stay within distance to effectively close out
Cartman718 @ 1/20/2017 9:36 AM
our 3 point defense has been atrocious. porter was open all night long. how many 3's does he have to bury before you start shadowing him?

OMG i was yelling at the tv when they kept leaving O.Porter open behind the 3 point line over and over again. I said in another post that they need to stop with the switching and stay on their own man more. If your guy is standing behind the 3 point line and he's a shooter just stay on him and let the other guys worry about their man.

jrodmc @ 1/20/2017 10:00 AM
I'm glad it took Horny until the last 2 minutes of the game to figure out you need to have someone on Wall the whole 94 feet of the court, instead of letting him laze his way up the court so he could hit jumper after jumper on our pathetic switching defense.

How many times did I hear "Wall shoots over Plumlee... it's good"

Sagging and switching against Wall and these freak shooters, great defensive scheme.

must be something in the water at MSG.

For how many years now have we sucked on defense, and especially with regard to defending the 3pt line?

I don't understand. Its frustrating.

Ummm, last year we had the number one at the rim defense in the league.

It is frustrating about the lack of defense against the three though; how the hell can a pro team allow another team to shoot 70% from three at one point last night? At least that can't be blamed on the Triangle. Or can it?

Oh wait, I forgot, it's all Melo's fault.

Melo happened to be the culprit on a lot of those 3's last night. Porter was on fire but Melo didn't adjust either.

Chandler @ 1/20/2017 11:37 AM
certainly 3 point defense sucks but let's be clear, the whole scheme stinks. It seems every game we give up 30 in the first (and probably most quarters) and are playing catch up

it's true we don't have Kwahi Leonard, D. Rodman, et al., L.James (who is fantastic) but we have enough talent to be at least mediocre on defense. Bird had no athleticism at all and played decent defense with smarts and fundamentals.

Someone on the team did blame the triangle - saying since they always practiced the triangle offensively, they didn't understand how to defend traditional p&r offenses.

? What does that have to do with 3point shots that were raining down on them

NYKBocker @ 1/20/2017 1:35 PM
Defense is all about hustle and desire. Any defensive scheme will work if the players executing it has those key elements. Right now, our key players does not have the hustle or desire 100% of the time

Melo is and always has been a lazy ass defender. Porter ate his lunch with an extra helping of dessert.

Melo's guy, right?

In my recollection, it was Melo's guy 50% of the night...other times Melo was defending Baker's man or Jennings' man or Holiday's man to prevent a straight drive to the hoop and someone else failed to cover Porter at the 3 point line. This is because Wall is always looking to go north south and not east west. This puts a lot of pressure on the defense and they are trying to get shots off before our defense sets. Not one time did I see Rose or Jennings go coast to coast. Wall...I'd say 3 to 4 times? It's the East's Russell Westbrook.

I think I am fair in assessing his strengths and deficiencies, not a Melo lover or hater.
He is absolutely horrible at defending 3 point line. Post defense... decent. Drive to hoop defense...average.
He is still the best offensive player on the team by far. KP doesn't even come close, but KP will surpass him I'd think in overall play one day.

Melo's offensive strengths overshadow his defensive flaws at the end of the day. He is the best scorer and the best passer and great under the basket rebounder on both sides and even with his defensive flaws, this team would have a much worse record if it wasn't for him.

Everyone hates iso-melo during critical possessions in the 4th. He definitely needs to stop that.
But the 3 point defense of Porter...that was 50% of Melo and 50% on rest of the team.

I have posted this before...20 assists off 42 FGs...that's a clear sign of Rose and Melo just going one on one. Rose had 2 assists in 31+ mins. Melo had 2 assists in 35+ mins. Jennings had a team high 3 TOs. But hey, at least we had only 10 TOs all game right? that's an improvement. Don't be fooled by his team high 5 assists. Most of those came in the 2nd quarter when Melo and the entire team got hot.

This defense of the 3 point line is only going to improve if they talk on defense, which from what I understand as another poster said... happened only when Plumlee was talking on defense. To have a d-league energy guy lead by example on defense...that's SAD.

Noah is the vocal type.
Melo...rarely
Rose...never
KP....never
KOQ...rarely
Holiday....never
Jennings...rarely.
Baker....never
Kuz...negative
Willy....never

You need one guy barking to the others on defense, and that's what Noah does more than anyone else on the team. Too bad he cannot lead by example.

maybe Plumlee turns into our Ben Wallace who IIRC was like a second rounder or undrafted but brought what he had in full force.

I wish that we would add a defensive minded PG like Briante Weber of Gary Payton 2.

hey I know - I'm just saying what I remember reading.

I don't know what the issue is.

I'd like to blame it on the triangle - and how players have to think too much there, and they can't then focus on defense.

That is lame- and I hope not true.

nixluva @ 1/20/2017 6:21 PM
If you watch Plumlee and see how he moves at his size it's clear that a lot of the problem is desire and determination to work on the defensive end. Part of it is being physically gifted with lateral quickness, but that's not everything. If you watch this team defend the movement on D STOPS when it should keep going until they have the ball. They don't defend thru the full 24 seconds.

Also poor technique by the guards on PnR. Too often they don't get in the way of the roll man so that he can't just glide to the rim. The guards get help from our bigs on PnR and they then have to recover to close down the lane on PnR. Once again they have to KEEP MOVING on D. They can't be satisfied with one effort. The need multiple efforts on D.

This. Ndour or Sasha are not doing much with their spots for the team at this point.

Isn't Porter second in the league in 3 pt percentage? It seems if you know that you make an adjustment and don't put Melo on him.
I googled Porter and saw this in a Wiz article.
Porter has connected on 15 of 23 deep shots over the last three games for a stunning .652 three-point percentage.

On Wednesday night, after Porter drilled six threes against the Memphis Grizzlies, center Marc Gasol admitted the team had to “pick your poison” in defending either Bradley Beal or Porter. It was the latest example of how Porter has taken advantage of an opponent’s defensive slight.

Also, for the season Porter is shooting 45.8% from 3.
