The guy has heart, and tonight and the past few games have shown that he still has game. Whether he backs up a stud rookie PG or he's the starter and we have a rookie coming off the bench, I think Jennings would be a damn fine keeper.
Chris Paul is a pipe dream. Jrue Holiday is likely a pipe dream, too. Jennings is the same age as Jrue and can be a steady, veteran hand at the PG and WANTS to be a Knick.
Keep him around.
At the right price, absolutely. I think he's got heart. He may lack between the ears at times, and could he please spend time improving his shot from outside, but he definitely brings energy at the pg spot.
Agree that anyone else is a pipe dream and likely too expensive.
Brandon Jennings jacking three point shot after three point shot and actually hitting them is fools gold..
I like jennings and I know he loves being a knick. Ideally, we would bring him back as a backup and have him split time with the rookie PG we draft.
Jennings is NOT the answer. Jennings has no bbiq. Perfect example. Near end of Nets game Knicks up by 4 with a couple of minutes left. Knicks got the rebound, came down , all 5 players set up on offense, something like 18 seconds left on clock. Jennings brings the ball up, goes to the right side and chucks up a 3??? Are you fuking kidding me??? At that point you want to work the clock down and get other players involved and get a good shot. Jennings has a terrible shot and he is the LAST person I want taking a shot at that point. Breen at that point said that Hornechek was livid at that shot and couldn't believe that shot. Jennings may be ok as a back up for the right price but definitely NOT a winning pg. His outside shot is just throwing the ball up, awful shot. He isn't going to change at this point in his career.
Don't mind him as a change of pace backup...but I would give him less than Lee.
Agree with holfresh about the fool's gold aspect of yesterday's game. You want consistency, and Jennings has been up and down.
I like his competitiveness, and while he is not a superstar defender, he has his moments and shows some heart.
I did not mind acquiring him because it was a great contract for us, but I've become more of a fan as the season has gone on.
$30M/3 would be my top offer at this point. He clearly is not a playoff team caliber starting PG, but I think he's decent 2nd unit/spot starter.
every player has flaws. People talk about free agents on this board like every signing is Lebron or bust. What the Knicks need to do is simply continue to build the talent base and add pieces. Jennings has tons of flaws so the value comes down to the price, but in this market at his age if we were able to keep him somewhere between 4/$40mm and 4/$52mm I think that is a very smart add to the roster.
Jennings can give you a dozen starts at PG a year and you wont take a huge step backward. He's a great backup. He's a great 6th man. He galvanizes a 2nd unit with his passing. He makes plays. He breaks down defenses and he's a good on the ball defender. He will frustrate you at times but he will frustrate the opposition more and I think he's a good teammate from everything I see and hear.
You dont have to be "one player away" to make good FA signings and add good players. Jennings is a good player unless you stupidly overpay him.
Jennings is terrible and a couple of decent games doesn't counter an entire season (and more) of sucking. We should be selling him off to any team that needs a PG like LAC or Cleveland. Beyond that, he holds no value to this team.

sure.. who are the guys your looking to add?
Continuity is important. Even though this is a lottery team, we need to bring some players back that can help the team next year. If every year to bring in 8 new players in a 10 man rotation, it's hard to get cohesion and some understanding. Look at O'Quinn and Porzingis. They were with us last year and they are better this year.
I'd like to keep
Hernangomez/Noah (by force Noah)
Porzingis/O'Quinn
Starting SF/Kuzminskas
Lee/Holiday
Starting PG/Jennings
We definitely need another point guard, we need an athletic 3 that can shoot and defend. We're not going to become a powerhouse overnight. Say we win 35 games this year, that's ok. Draft some lottery talent into the team. Trade Melo in the offseason for a young starter at 3 or 1. Use free agency to get some more young talent that have their athletic primes ahead of them. If we can get one need (starting 3 or 1) with a Melo trade. then use the free agency to get another need addressed. You draft the best lottery talent available with the highest ceiling kind of like we did with KP.
If we go lottery again as KP's team in 2018, so be it. We'd have a 2017 and 2018 lottery pick added to KP, Willy and some other young players. I'm willing to see this out. I'm also excited to see what this team can do without Rose or Melo. I think there is a bright future in NY with KP and young players with some balance of unselfish vets IF the fans and front office exhibits patience.

This is pretty much how I feel. I'm not a fan. Jennings takes what he gives. OTOH, as an economically signed 6-ish type bench player, I'm okay with it. But no bidding wars - not that rare a talent.

This is where I'm at.
I think Jennings is a valuable piece for continuity - but I'd like the plan to be for him to come off the bench and signed at a reasonable number.
Jennings would be a good backup I think. As a starter though you want someone who is consistent. And Jennings has been on and off all season
Jennings gets it. He wants to be here... he's honored to be here actually. It's a childhood dream.
Of course I want a young blue chip guy, but I don't think jrue holiday is worth the extra cash. Jennings no doubt we'll resign cheap. He's going to get a bonus but not anything close to 20 mill. Id rather have him around and then draft a youngin to be his understudy.
Only point guard i would want to trade for is Reggie Jackson for Rose. There's the obvious Dragic, Rubio and Brandon Knight too for rose... if none of those guys can be had then Jennings should be that guy
I'm a fan of his game but I think the Knicks would be smart to trade him... I don't think there many if any better back ups than Jennings. A back up is not something where you're looking to trade for a guy with a five year deal. If the Cavs were willing to pay two firsts for a guy like Mozgov, I really believe BJ could fetch a similar return, especially because if you need a back up point you're desperate because they are so rarely available
I also don't think the Knicks should be making big money acquisitions. They need so much.
You need a good 10 man rotation in the NBA to be competitive unless you have 2 or 3 superstars that can carry you. In the Knicks case I see them as a team with a potential to have 1 all-star, and the rest is up to depth. KP needs to be our featured player, and you take the wins and losses as they come with investing in him, You hope for growth and movement forward. Guys like BJ are needed in a rebuilding situation because you need a 10 man rotation. Not like we are going to be drafting top 3 and a franchise point guard is coming our way this summer. We are going to get a solid player in the draft, maybe a good get or a steal. A franchise point guard is not happening.
If BJ stays for 24M over 3 years, I take him. He's a solid backup and good lockerroom guy. He plays with passion. He looks to pass. He's probably going to get better with time in consistency of the same role. He reminds me a little bit of Jason Terry when Terry was in Dallas. Would come off the bench and do some good things with Dirk. I think he and KP can have some real chemistry there and I see good chemistry with BJ and Willy as well.
In the end we won't be any good until we either have 2-3 superstars in their prime or 1 star and a very good 10 man rotation (Like Boston has). Whichever way we acheieve it, I am ok. I think it's easier to have a team that has a good bench and a 10 man rotation than to sign or draft 3 KP level talents.
So I'm looking towards some internal growth, some youth brought in from a Melo trade, some youth from the draft lottery and some in athletic prime free agents brought in. More than anything, we need to invest in players that want to play the right way. Jennings is that to a large extent. He looks to pass first. He looks to bring energy. He's been a good signing for Phil. The biggest problem with our team is the 1 on 1 no defense culture Melo and Rose have brought combined with Noah's horrible play.

Maybe we can build the juggernaut backcourt of Jennings/Shumpert
One good game and lets resign him. A bad game and we want to buy him a ticket out of town. Honestly I say just get rid of him. Not NBA material in my book. He would be better if in China or Europe.

sure.. so who are the guys you are targeting? Jennings goes by. Resign Rose? Draft? Hand the team to Ron Baker? Whats your plan?

I have always been a fan and never said to run him out of town.
Who is NBA material in your book?

I have a great plan for the Knicks one that should have been implemented in 2000. Since we have some players of value I would look to trade them and try hard to get picks for them. If the Knicks can manage to get some first rounders then my target would be Lorenzo Ball. If we can land Monk, Fox might be good as well. If the Knicks can get another first rounder a late one I might go for a player like Bacon from Florida State. With the second round picks I would look Euro or seniors preferably a Villanova player.
Thats my plan I want to get the rebuilding in full gear. The vets the Knicks should consider are second tier or third tier players. I'm not in a hurry to win I want growth. The east is done for another 2-4 years it's LeBron's. I'm not even going to challenge it. I'm only concerned about new player development.
