Knicks · If Cle gave me unprotected picks... say 2021 + 2023 I'll trade em Melo for pennies on the dollar (page 1)

fishmike @ 2/14/2017 10:34 AM
Take back Korver, Shump and Frye.
If they need a wing Ill send em Holiday.

I think its very feasible that Melo goes on one of his March/April tears and in an effort to get us back into the playoffs essentially just screws up our draft. I hate the idea of dumping him for the equiv of NBA trash but Lebron cant last forever and those picks have a potential for being very high if/when they fall on post-Lebron hard times.

I know it feels like light years away but those picks can be game changers for franchises who get lucky enough to get them.

Nalod @ 2/14/2017 10:40 AM
Ted Sepien says hello!

This is how you do it, keep rebuilding, then gold might strike. Showtime was built this way.
Fooking Lakers killed it with long range picks. Melo will be retired when these picks hit.
Not agreeing this is possible, but its classic.

franco12 @ 2/14/2017 10:43 AM
Can Korver be retraded? I think I would do that in a heart beat. And I'm not in a rush to dump Melo in some kind of addition by subtraction.

And Cleveland might just be desperate enough to make that kind of deal.

very interesting suggestion. Would take some real nads by our FO to swing a deal with picks that far out

HofstraBBall @ 2/14/2017 10:50 AM
Phil will bring back Shump? Thought he saw him as one of the toxic players that caused that horrible 37 win season. The ones that needed to go to assure we would never have another such low win season. Will he also be bringing back JR and Chandler and THJ?

2021? Is Phil confident he will be around/alive? Now If we get their 2050 pick I'm in. I'm sure it will be worth the wait. We always get great players in the draft.

I dont think with the NTC etc that a Melo trade will yield great assets. I dont think we will field a playoff team worth building around Melo. I do think it makes sense to take a step back to focus on the draft.

I do think with Willy/KP we have a build around frontcourt. I do think executing on a high caliber guard in this draft can set us up for a decade. I do think it may take another year off lottery play before we get there but I am willing. I think so long as Melo is here he wants to be the face, the man and is good enough a player to carry us for stretches and eventually only hurting our drafting and ability to build for the future.

Dumping Melo doesnt make us better. Just lets us rebuild without distractions. Yes, Phil did not navigate this well for those who's singular purpose is to ensure he's properly blamed. This is about moving on and whats best for the Knicks.

Do NBA teams other than us trade unprotected picks? Serious question. It doesn't seem common for teams to do this (if even done at all).

Phil will be gone too!!
We can restock the cupboard for Isiah! He can use those picks when Towns has his kidney removed and Minny trades him!!!
Just kidding. I was referencing the Isiah trade for Eddy.

Look it up dude! Starting with Boston's pick this year. Lakers pick with declining protecting. Memphis owes Por with declining protection. Its all over the league. Tons of outstanding trades with top 10 protection one year but nothing if not conveyed the next.

I think if you consider how little they give up now Cle takes a serious look at a trade like that.

Guys like HofstraBBall are mostly concerned about throwing poop. I am curious about what people think of a deal like this. What about you Bonn? Feasible scenario? Stupid for Knicks or Cavs? Honestly I am curious what you and others think of this, considering how limited our options to move him may be.

GTFOH with that. You call it "throwing poop" questioning why such a smart guy like Phil would trade for the very same guy he gave up on, for absolutely nothing, a couple of years ago? Good cop out. And you make a thread and don't like opposing views or being questioned? I'll make a note of it. Btw, you still defending the Noah signing?

Moonangie @ 2/14/2017 11:28 AM
We need to lose to optimize our draft this summer. We DON'T need to win meaningless games with Melo in the fold. I like Melo, but he's now in the way of what's best for our team in the future. Time to go, even for bubkis.

If we can't trade him, we damn well ought to trade every other asset (Rose, KoQ, Lee, Noah, Jennings, Holiday). We should keep WHG, KP, Cheezy, and Baker. Jennings will be a FA this summer, so we can get him back easily enough if desired.

NYKBocker @ 2/14/2017 11:37 AM
Korver can't be traded until March 7th.

I will take Love, 2 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder. Fuck the Cavs. They want help this year then that is the price.

knicks1248 @ 2/14/2017 11:47 AM
Why would Cleveland give up shump (best perimeter defender) Korver (a guy they just traded for and best 3 point shooter)fry (A stretch 4 thats fits like a glove in their system) and a pick that will almost certainly be protected.. for a guy that doesn't add anything they need, and in fact makes them worse from a defensive stand point, depth and balance..

Oh yeah, even if a pick is initially protected, it's not protected indefinitely in future years. I thought you meant there wouldn't even be any initial protection on the pick, which is different than the examples you're giving. I'd be OK with this though I'd rather just get expiring contracts since we don't know how good or bad Cle would be and this is really far in the future. I don't think Phil would it anyway. You're talking about picks 4 to 6 years from now - players that likely reach their prime when Phil's around 80.

Yeah, I'd rather get expiring contracts but this trade would be better than keeping Melo.

I think it's too hard to trade Melo in any deal that make's sense for all parties concerned.

I also think it will be hard to move Rose (if they are trying, which I hope).

Who knows, we could be buyers at the deadline
