Technically though I'm assuming this is referring to the value of selling the organization. It doesn't say anything about the annual profits the owner makes. That would be determined by annual revenues and expenses. Being located in Manhattan, the Knicks might also be the most expensive franchise to run.

Valuations. Own the building, TV revenue, advertisment revenue. I have a 28 pg MSG report on my desk and the valuations are compelling at current stock price.
Im not at liberty to share it, but basically Jimmy runs the gig but he has shareholders to answer to.
At this point Jimmy is not involved in basketball. The Oak thing is very small. Free agents understand that Oak is the only cast out. Who is at odds of the organization? Marbles? formally Spree? Who else?
I would suggest Boogie Cousins stay away from NYC.
Its about winning and contract size. Also, NYC is not for everyone. Jimmy and family own a good chunk of the shares and control the company. Its about ownership of it all, not just the knicks. MSG has no long term debt.
They can spend on what ever they want. Even on PHil.
Also, MSG's stock has not done great. It was at $178 in Oct 2015 and is at 173 now. The Dow Jones has gone up almost 20% during that same time interval. So MSG hasn't been a good investment the past few years.
you would need some hedge fund to buy up shares, and demand management unlock value by splitting up assets - and that probably doesn't work because of the way the Dolans are set up with controlling interests.

Knicks only worth 3.3b based on multiple paid for Clippers, ATL, and SAC the last few years.
Knicks if so valued puts all other MSG properties at .75 cents on the dollar.

Nalod is only bringing this to a conversation suggesting that Oak is hardly a reason for Jimmy to even consider selling the team. Nobody is putting a gun to anyone's head regarding ownership of the stock. Most look for growth opportunities. If the company continues to trade at a discount Dolan should consider looking at taking it private, but he'll need an equity partner. That is unlikely. Dolan family could sell their stake, but it would at a premium.

And the Dolans already tried to take it private- if I recall, they were rebuffed.
I don't like Dolan much. But i like that he is willing to spend. Despite his issues I don't think it's impossible to win with him. He just consistently places his faith in the wrong guys. Always chasing "stars". He finally gave Phil Jackson full power. Jackson is responsible for this roster and record. Isiah let him down. Phil let him down. He needs to move away from "star" GMs. Get a hard working stat nerd to run the team and get out of the way again once Phil leaves.

This is the problem exactly - Dolan knows zero about basketball. He would never interview an up and coming GM. The guy only hires yes men or big names. He is a, egotistical, petty little man who would rather exercise feuds with the media and former players/staff than put together a competent basketball team.
Expecting Dolan to hire a qualified candidate GM is like waiting for hell to freeze over.
Who cares about spending if it's all for nothing?
