Two, he does not have that extra gear of competitive spirit. When his team is down 10, losing, he is usually almost always seen having a laugh or chuckle. He does not take the losing that serious. He doesn't eat, live or breathe for the game. Which is fine, it's healthy after all it's just a sport, but again the all time greats do not possess this quality.
So while I've always like Melo for being Melo, a chill guy and someone generally nice, I will be surprised if he ever wins anything as a top player on a team. He just doesn't bring the two key elements you see the all time greats bring. 1) Making teammates around him better. 2) Bring an extra gear of competitive fire.
If you compare him to tier 2 players in the league. The Kevin Love or Jimmy Butler types. He fares well. He's just as good, if not better. He's just not the #1 or "leader" material. Never has been.
Are you kidding? How many Knick teams has Melo carried by his will and determination? Does he wear down? Absolutely. Did you watch last night's game with Dakich and JVG? Dakich had a great line. He said, Carmelo Anthony is not the problem. Rose and Porzingis are talented but... KP was sick but there are a lot of things he needs to improve on. JVG on Melo, he works so hard but makes it look so easy. He is doing that against a really good nba defender with length. I guess you see what you want to see. Sometimes fresh eyes provide a good perspective.
Not sure if joking - "will and spirit....Melo?"

Not joking at all. Would love a list of teammates that were competent during Melo's tenure in NY.
^^^feel free to include any competent coaches or guys in management.

I was against the melo trade (and honestly, that post trade Melo and Billups team was one of the most boring Knicks team to watch), but he impressed me when he put the team on his shoulders and forced us into the playoffs twice. Once, the first year he was here (I think Billups and STAT got injured), and then again after D'Antoni got fired (and I think Amar'e and Lin were out injured)
Melo does not have the fire to compete for 48 minutes on both ends
Players who do, don't just rely on scoring to make an impact
They defend, board or do something that gives their team an edge outside of scoring
Of course Melo is not the teams biggest problem. No one said he is. But not a single team with Melo as its best player will be a contender or even a playoff team. That's why the teams that want to trade for him won't even offer their 3rd best player. No Blake. No Love. Teams want Melo as their 3rd or 4th best player in an Olympic Melo role.
There are great players who make others better (i.e. Lebron, Magic, Bird) and there are great players who need the proper pieces around them for winning success on the court (i.e. Iverson, Ewing, Reggie Miller). Melo just happens to be in the latter category. You could put Lebron on a YMCA rec league team and he'll get them to the playoffs in the NBA. Melo is not that guy. Why people are hating on Melo because he's not Lebron is beyond me. For all of his flaws (flaws he has had his whole career), the Knicks have failed him in not surrounding him with the proper pieces to maximize success on the court.
Melo is who he is. He's a great player whether people want to admit it or not. He's just not a top tier, Mt. Rushmore level player. Funny how players & coaches (except George Karl) know this but fans don't.

Couldn't agree with you more.

He's been a very good player. Top 7-15 any given year. Not worth top 5 money. Not worth top 5 money. $25mil a year at any point in his career.
