All you can ask from an executive is to do two things reasonably well

1- Don't destroy future stability by trading away draft picks UNLESS it's like the Cavs where championships are at stake

2- Get as much talent as possible available

Phil has done both.
He's drafted well and not screwed up the future
He got best talent that was available to him like Rose, Noah, Lee, Jennings and got Melo to re-sign.

He even fired a coach who was a friend and a key player for him because he didn't like how he ran the offense.

In the end, the talent failed to mesh. That happens. It's not like we had great options.

Ok so we don't trade for Rose. We don't sign Noah. Doesn't mean we are better today. What Phil did was take a shot at winning now and also keeping options open long term.

It hasn't worked out. But I don't have any issue with the direction.

Phil doesn't need to come out and say what the players should know. It's on them to play hard and as a team which they failed to do. It's on the coaches. The talent was there to at least be a 7th or 8th seed. They aren't 23-35 because of Phil. That's because these guys underperformed. They've played the worst brand of basketball. One on one with little defense. Phil put together a team that if they played together and with a sense of pride would at worst be .500

Sure Phil has faults and made mistakes. However he did the right things this past offseason. He changed offense to be more like a winning modern day offense. He brought in point guards that can get into the paint. We had talent just not talent that had direction from the vets and the coaching staff.

There was no point where Phil could have signed and traded Melo. It was either resign Melo with a no trade clause or lose him to the Bulls as a FA and get nothing in return. There would be no incentive for Bulls to offer anything for Melo if they could possibly land him as a FA due to Phil and Melo not agreeing to terms and Melo being very selective about what team he would play for.

We have all our draft picks going forward(1 first rounder and 2 2nd rounders this draft) and some solid young players to move on with. Phil tried to win this season it didn't work out. Now we fall back on our draft picks and the expiring(s) of Rose and Jennings. Its not like we have no picks and are in salary cap hell.

Hopefully this summer we can get a trade done. Melo could go to a playoff team and we can get picks/pieces and build correctly like we should have done a few years back. Everyone has blame her e phil,melo,dolan all have a part in this. I think a change will be good for everyone involved

We will be in rebuild mode again next year. I don't see any basketball incentive reason for Melo to stay here. He said he didn't want to leave without a plan. Hopefully he comes up with one going into the summer.

i think he owes us to try and get us good value back. We gave a ton of assets,money,and demands to satisfy him. Maybe stretch his list out a little so we get a good return

IMO it's not really about BLAME!!! This is about reality. This team doesn't work but the young players have talent and upside so we need to move forward with adding more young talent to this core.

The fact is Melo and Rose don't fit with the Ball and Player Movement this team wants to play and they most definitely don't defend at a level we need. We can replace them with younger 2 Way players that play Team Ball.
There's no need to kill Phil about this losing season when he tried to give Melo what he asked for. It was up to Melo to lead and help the team win.

Now unless the team goes on a major win streak they're headed towards the Lottery and this Draft we have picks. We also have some tradeable assets. Perhaps this summer we can move them for young talent and picks.

I understand Melo's frustrations. I'm sure he is frustrated because he can't make others better. When the KNicks won 54 games they had Kidd call him old or whatever its F'ing Kidd the man is a winner. He took the Nets to two finals and won with Dallas. Melo needs to be lead and the Knicks haven't provided that leadership that he requires to be effective in the proper way, the thing is there are only a few players that can make Melo a winner and its probably LeBron and Paul. I can't see Melo winning big with any other team but with those guys. Maybe you find a player that at max lead him to 40-45 wins at the max.

I would start to consider reduction of minutes or benching, the Knicks need those 20-25 shots going for other players for their development needs. If Melo is content then he will have no problem. If he wants to leave then he should have no problem but to waive the NTC.

Most teams win when they have strength at the top and those top players lead the team to wins. You can't absolve Melo and Rose from their responsibility to lead the way. That's simply how it works. The role players aren't supposed to lead. Melo has been the best player and default leader. Even if only by example. If he gives Max Effort on D and passes the ball others will follow!!!
