LivingLegend wrote:Monk is a guy I go back and forth on for a few reasons.- while certainly no pure PG I did watch about 15 or so of his UK games and he did show some unselfishness, vision and passing ability in flashes
- in the triangle we don't need a pure PG but simply 2 guards who can move, pass and shoot
- he is outstanding off the ball either cutting off the ball or using screens --- all of which fits in the triangle
- this is a kid with I think (+4) 30 plus games as a freshmen. The SEC player of the year and a kid who put up 47 on National Champion NC and 27 on South Carolina D
- he is spectacular in the open court (some Westbrook in him)
- his range and form are both outstanding
It wouldn't be the worse thing to put a dynamic wing scorer next to KP -- particularly a guard that could pressure the defense on the break (get us out in transition and finish) -- we really haven't had a legit wing threat like that in some time.
Also liked that he showed a great attitude at UK -- sharing the limelight with Fox/BAM and taking tough coaching from Cal.
Here is something to think about as you are a Ron Baker guy... Baker measured 6'4 with a 6'10 wingspan. Do you consider the fact that those two are complimentary? Baker handles the ball and takes on the tougher guard in the backcourt. Monk guards opposing 1's usually, plays off the ball and both can spread the floor... Going to be tough to win NBA games with that backcourt but maybe Monk comes off the bench to play with Baker. You like that?
At best, I envision Monk to be a Gilbert Arenas type. He'll never be a pure point, but maybe he can learn to play it well enough to stay on the court longer. He can produce his shot and score against tight defenses, so I don't think the Dell Curry tag quite fits. Ben Gordon might be a good comp.
LivingLegend wrote:WaltLongmire wrote:Love his shooting, but he has other limitations...D and being a distributor. You are looking at a guy who is under 6'3" w/o his shoes, (actually listed at 6'3" WITH shoes and about a 6'3" wingspan by KU in 2016) has no wingspan, and was invisible at times as a ball handler.
On the right team he can be a nice fit, but right now I see him as a limited player who is the best streak shooter in the draft.
As I've said before...think Del Curry, Steph's dad. That is what Monk will be, though yes, he is a much better athlete.
Good points but if you look at how Cal used him at UK -- in all 1/2 court situations Monk was played off the ball because they had Fox/Briscoe with the ball (and neither of them were perimeter threats). Monk was basically asked to run off baseline screens and often asked/forced to take tough/contested shots against defenses set to stop him. If anything (like Towns) I think Monk's game could expand at the NBA level in a more free flowing offense where the ball is moving better and there are better players playing next to him. Also think the NBA game/shot clock play to his strengths.
In your defense...we see what Towns and Booker became after they left the KU system, at least on the offensive end. Neither is a great defender, though, especially Booker.
I put this up once before...From Draftnet...written up 1/29/17, so it is current.
Weaknesses: Certainly best as a scoring guard, though at around 6’3 with a 6’6 wingspan, definitely would be considered undersized and could struggle defending bigger guards … While some have referred to him as a combo guard, he is not particularly comfortable setting up the offense and does not really show the vision of a primary handler … Can be a bit loose with his handle and decision making, not entirely comfortable beyond a few dribbles creating for himself … Low FT rate, while he scores from all three levels does not get to the basket often enough and can be thrown off by contact … Has struggled defending at the point of attack and on-ball, one might not be sure how versatile he is as a defender … Low steal and block rates, as well as surprisingly low rebound rate given his explosive athleticism … Has not shown much ability in the pick-and-roll, once again leading to questions about his translating to a lead guard …
I like Fox and Nitilikina at the PG position because of their size and defensive reputations + they are known as lead guards. After Rose and Calderon, Phil and Hornacek are going to want a PG who plays both ways.
We will see...maybe there is more to Monk's game, but I don't see Jackson taking him unless we fall to 9, I would think.
Im passing on Monk--when I first saw him I thought this guy had the potential to be a super athletic Steph Curry. By the end of the season Im questioning if hes a top 20 prospect.
I think Monk could work but only if paired with a PG who can facilitate, defend, and has good length.
Monk has his outbursts of shooting... but watching Kentucky closely the past few months, the guy he reminded me most of was JR Smith.
Supremely athletic, can get red hot from three (I think the only guy with more five 3pt-made fg games than JR is Steph Curry in the entire NBA)... maybe Monk's head is on better, so he can better access the pure talent JR sort of misused or waster throughout his career. They tried to make JR a PG when he came into the league, too, because he was undersized for a SG.
Some other times, though, I see Monk and I could see him turning into a Gilbert Arenas type.
I think he'll be good... but honestly, I have higher hopes for our pick than him.
I'd still take De'Aaron Fox, Frank Ntilikina, and Jonathan Isaac over him at 6/7, if they were on the board.
Is it just me or does monk look a lot taller than his listed height? I just don't buy these listings that he is 6'3.

Draft express has him listed at 6'4"... hard to say with college guys. I would say Monk is probably a legit 6'3", maybe 6'4", because Kentucky is run like a season-long NBA draft combine. Guys on other teams listed at 6'3" / 6'4" in college might be listed verrrry generously.
Other players from the past that were "very athletic":
Nate Robinson
Lavor Postell
Kenny Walker
Anthony Bonner
Thanassis Atempouko
How'd that turn out?

Monk has never been measured over 6'2" w/o shoes...and he has been measured many times.
The KU measurements had him 6'3" in shoes, with a shorter wingspan than some of the other times he got measured.
Yup...traditionally, colleges will lie on the heights for their ballplayers

I would say if any of them could shoot like Monk they would be still be here. Walker might be done..

Were any of those regarded as top 10 picks?
Its his skill and ability to score that has him in lottery. The fact that he can jump like a young Vince Carter should open eyes when he does his workouts.

what changed? Why does he no longer have that potential?
Their numbers as college freshmen are almost identical

And to be fair....It wasn't Nate's skill that got him exiled.

Steph Curry is a ballhandler/PG first Monk is not.

Are you comparing MVP and NBA champ Steph Curry to Monk? Or are you comparing 18 year old Davidson freshman Curry to Monk?

You might as well accept that people sometimes have a hard time keeping things in perspective! We tend to forget how frail Steph was when he was drafted.
Knicks won't even consider Monk
unless we fall to 8/9 or Monk works out for us like the second coming of Steph Curry.
6'3" tweener who doesn't handle the ball like a PG or play D is not being drafted by Jackson, guys.

Yeah but I thought that was understood already. Monk is not at the top of my list and I would guess most feel the same way. I agree that he's in play if we fall back.
If we draft any PG with our 6 to 8 pick we must fire Honacek ASAP! Plus hire Mark Jackson asap for $24M 4 yr contract.
GS Curry n Klay were individual guards who didnt put effort on defense, until head-coach Mark Jackson put them on to complimenting each other strengths in the backcourt to perform on the same-page, plus pressuring the ball while the other defend the passing lane.
The Pacers HOF guard Reggie Miller were never a NBA threat at winning a game, until Mark Jackson became the Pacers PG.
The last Knick player to win the NBA ROY were Mark Jackson !!!

Jeff had very good success coaching PG's. Why would we need to fire him just cuz we draftba PG???

Thinking back, Bledsoe never showed much in the way of playmaking ability when he was playing with Wall. He was in a comparable situation to Monk. He was asked to spot up, finish and defend. He wasn't able to flourish as a lead guard till he got to the pros. Of course, he got to learn under Chris Paul and Jeff. Would the fanbase be patient enough to let Monk learn? Same thing applies to Fix and his shot.
