Knicks · How would you feel if Rose was re-signed (page 1)

The Minnesota Timberwolves view Derrick Rose as a potential free-agent target this summer, league sources told ESPN.

Rose, 28, will be a free agent for the first time in his career after spending last season with the New York Knicks.

Rose averaged 18 points, 4.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 64 games for New York, which finished the season a disappointing 31-51.

Rose is coming off a meniscus tear in his left knee that required season-ending surgery. At the time of surgery, the Knicks offered a timeline for recovery of three to six weeks, so Rose is expected to be fully recovered at this time.

Rose, the 2011 MVP, has a strong relationship with Timberwolves president and head coach Tom Thibodeau; he played for five seasons under Thibodeau with the Chicago Bulls.

The Timberwolves and Knicks discussed a potential trade before the deadline for a package headlined by Rose and Minnesota point guard Ricky Rubio, but no agreement was reached.

Rose and his agent, B.J. Armstrong, have both said that they'd be open to re-signing with the Knicks. In his season-ending news conference, team president Phil Jackson said he was impressed by Rose expressing a desire to return despite the difficult season.

"He enjoyed playing here even with the losses, which of course surprises us because he's been on some very successful teams," Jackson said. "But he wants to redeem himself as a player. Which I like that attitude. I like who Derrick represents as himself. He's very direct about taking on a big challenge."

Toward the end of the regular season, sources told ESPN that the Knicks hadn't ruled out the possibility of re-signing Rose this summer.

It is unclear at this point which other teams besides the Timberwolves view Rose as a potential free-agent target. Some rival executives believe that the San Antonio Spurs may have interest in Rose, depending on how the free-agent market for point guards develops.

Rose, who has a history of serious knee injuries, said in late March that he'd prioritize winning over money as a free agent.

"Not even thinking money. I've got more than enough money saved. If I stopped playing basketball now, I'll be all right," Rose told reporters in Utah on Wednesday night. "I want to win. I want to be happy and feel at peace with myself wherever I'm at. But being at the negotiating table, you never know. I'm not going to negotiate with people where money is the No. 1 thing I'm asking for. I want to win."

I just don't see how he fits into the system,

Bonn1997 @ 5/24/2017 6:41 PM
At or near the league min (very unlikely), sure. Otherwise, he can be someone else's problem.
dacash @ 5/24/2017 6:51 PM
if we get a nice core group of young starters, rose agrees to come off the bench for like 3 years 15 million y not, but i think thibbs will over pay
LivingLegend @ 5/24/2017 6:56 PM
As long as they get rid of Melo I would be ok (luke-warm) with bringing Rose back.

I think it would really tell you a great deal about what they think of Melo (effort - locker room impact) if they push to move him but bring back Rose (WOW).

I do think in this scenario it would be a move to bring back someone to alleviate some of the night-in / night-out scoring pressure off KP.

Rose while he often plays dumb -- he plays hard and attacks and despite his lack of assists I don't sense a selfish player --- maybe just more a unique one (the type Phil has dealt with before --- ex Artest/Rodman).

I am not interested. I need to have a better passer and shooter at PG.
PhilinLA @ 5/24/2017 8:01 PM
sick to my stomach. He's a ball hog, and I'm sick of watching ball hogs.

what's the difference between a scorer and a ball hog?

Any scorer is going to take 20 shots a game, make or miss

newyorknewyork @ 5/24/2017 8:58 PM
He didn't give us much confidence on a last year of contract show me type of situation. Its hard to have confidence in him signing for multiple yrs.
newyorker4ever @ 5/24/2017 9:06 PM
Only if it's for a sign and trade for R.Rubio.
Allanfan20 @ 5/24/2017 11:02 PM
Nope. He cannot shoot or pass or play consostent defense and he has certainly proven that he cannot lead. In a contract year, he showed no signs of improving any of these aspects of his game. I prefer to see him in the garden as an opponent next season.

Teams need scorers, but they also need a starting PG who will keep everyone on the same page. Rose was more interested in calling his own number than running the team. He went AWOL during the season, was talking about the team needing to play better defense, but played almost none himself. No way I want him back. Wont even go into his health.

Knicks won't get a better player than Rose in free agency.
I've said this again and again.
They also have his bird rights meaning they can offer him more than other teams.

Go step by step.
First trade Melo.
Then make some draft selections, the lottery pick being the most imtengral.

See what you look like as a team after a Melo trade and your draft picks. If you feel that Rose can help a team after that you go with it. I would not top 60 million over 3 years, with the 3rd year being a team option. Or do a 1+1 deal with the second year being a player option.

I also think Rose is open to the Triangle, is willing to do make some changes to his game and has respect/mutual accord with Phil. I think he will take on a bigger role if Melo is not in the picture.

I certainly wouldn't hate it if we had a Rose/Monk/Crowder/Hernangomez/Porzingis lineup starting next year. That lineup has all players in their twenties, with 3 of them being 22 or younger and would have an average age of 25. A young starting lineup, yet a lineup that would be competitive in my opinion. I can see that team be right where we were last season, winning about 40% of their games. Maybe more depending on whether Porzingis, Willy and Monk are better than anticipated.

It's not that cut and dry. Melo is a ball hog sand so is Rose. When the ball gets in their hands the game stops. All the great ones know when to pass because they know the ball will comne back

excellent post. You nailed it. Rose has value and is an impact player (or could be) in the right situation. Both he and Melo are ball hogs. Neither play much defense. The one thing that Rose doesnt do that Melo does and I cant stand is hold the ball. Rose will over dribble at times but he remains in motion.

That being said there are a lot of depends. I wouldnt add Rose if I drafted a young PG like Dennis Smith. Rose is a better player not but at the expense of our draftee's development. However if we grab a guy like Isaac than another scorer makes sense if the money is right.

I don't see him taken less the $15 per, he also said money doesn't motivate him, so will see

Whatever Rose signs for with the KNicks will be too much and an indication that Phil can only assemble a garbage roster. Whatever Rose signs for elsewhere will be a good deal that Phil passed on because he's stupid. Pretty sure thats how it will play out around here.
Vmart @ 5/25/2017 11:23 AM
I would feel terrible if Knicks brought back Rose. I don't like the fact that he went AWOL. He never liked NY and honestly you can see it on his face. He is a injury risk and we cannot go forward with a youth movement with him on the team. He will take 20 shots and those shots are meant for the young guys to find their footing in the league.
Nalod @ 5/25/2017 12:11 PM
Rose is a cool cat who shows little on his face. There is a stench on the knicks and I don't know what is the chemistry that created it.

Phil has changed the paradigm from haphazardly adding players and then figuring out the best way to coach them. Problem is knicks wouldn't even hire the right coach. We take great coaches and kill them. Nelson, Chaney, Wilkens, and MDA all had great careers prior to being here. JVG and Woodson coached to what was here. JVG got lucky by getting big extension going to finals because he was about to get canned. INstead Grunfeld got canned.

I know the triangle is the topic of many and we do know that some teams use elements of it. They are successful and I have to believe Phil Jax understands what works and what won't in 2017.
We do need a ball attacking guard. Rose had a hard time with the offense but was it the generic triangle of yesterday, or the complex nature of a team being pulled in different directions by coaches, agents, players, legacy, assistant coaches, divas, non divas, etc?????

I don't know. Players do stupid stuff and the Awol thing was bad. If he was a good teammate and it was isolated then its not a big deal. Rose has a very stoic manner about him and it may put people off.
Lets stick to basketball matters and I'd say if rose is ok with a limited role and building his career back up to were he is healthy and can add things to his game than relying on superior athletic explosiveness then I'd feel OK with him. At what price? The market will tell us.

As for his comments about wanting to return? Sounds generic, they all want to return because they all want more teams bidding on them. More money, more love. Being in demand is a good thing!

he's horrible and a net negative. i would feel bad about it.

I could live with his other faults, but the defense is too much. It's demoralizing to see us go on nice run, only to give it back seconds later. His lack of resistance filter down to the rest of the roster and leaves us a scrambling mess. Our coaching doesn't do him any favors, sure. But the lack of effort on his part is just too frustrating too watch. I'd rather someone less talented, like Charlie ward back in the day, hustle than see a supremely talented player like rose dog it.
