That could turn into the unofficial motto for the 2017-18 Knicks sooner than later. If you haven’t heard of him yet, that’s Missouri 6-foot-10 freshman combo forward Michael Porter Jr., expected to be the top pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Never understood people being happy about tanking.

Even without Melo (which is a big if), Knicks will be better than a 20-25 win team.

nowhere in the article does it say that the knicks are TRYING to tank for anyone. the article states that teams COULD try and tank for porter.

Porter or Doncic would be great. Another player is Isaac Bonga but he needs to improve his shot making but he will potentially be the youngest player drafted next year.

The statement I read today stated the Knicks are commiting to youth. How did that get turned around into tanking for Porter?

The irony here is that agents from around the league made statements in the press that they viewed the Knicks as a destination of last resort for their clients. Now, the worm has turned and the Knicks aren't interested in these agents FA scraps.

the business in hand is decidedly to get our house in order first. I am liking this sober approach to the business of basketball. Getting a top 3 pick in next years draft is likely to the result of this strategy. Where is the downside, we are not contending this year. The press is always so negative about the Knicks it is tiresome

With or without Melo, if KP and Hermy improved at all during the Summer, then you can kiss tanking goodbye and we should honestly be rooting for improvement.

Exactly. Not a fan of watching losing basketball. I only condone tanking if the season is already lost. But play to win.

No, we tanked for Okafor but we didn't get one of the first three picks. You didn't hear a single person during the season root for us to lose games in order to draft KP. Other than the Spurs for Robinson and later Duncan, what other teams succeeded (succeeded defined as winning big) by tanking?

Celtics under Pitino was reasonably transparent regarding the tank job for Duncan that year. Celtics got burned and it cost Pitino his job.
Robinson got hurt and the Spurs were awful for one season.
With three yoots that can start its high time we let them play it thru. There is a big learning curve and if done correctly it can really push the franchise.

Its not about tanking though.. its simply saying we arent going to spend or over spend to marginally increase the win total, when in doing so is actually counter productive as your draft pick is worse, and your cap situation is less favorable.

They're talking about patiently rebuilding. No one from the team used the word tank. I'm sure they're not telling players to try to miss shots or lose games if that's what you mean by tanking.

So in the 32 years of the lottery you have two examples of when tanking yielded a huge payoff and Philly who you are anticipating winning big after five years of essentially tanking.

Speaking of the Lebron draft, I would rather be in the position the Pistons were in that year (similar to Boston this year). They won 50 games AND ended up with the second pick in the draft. Tanking is NOT the only way to get high draft picks. Perhaps we should advocate more for smarter trades versus "lets lose as many games as possible."

Phil stated before that the Knicks are not in the tanking business. We're going to do the best we can to improve the club. In other words we will sign guys or treads for guys that fit out current agenda. If there is no move to make so be it. Later in the year if it makes more sense to bench players to get extra ping pong balls, we've done that I the past. Phil isn't here but the blueprint is intact... its The right course of action.

That's because there are only certain drafts that are actually worth tanking for. This coming draft appears to be one of those drafts. The guys in the top 5 all look like they will be studs in the NBA barring injury.

I disagree real tanking happens on the FO with the team they put on the floor. Right now looking at the Knicks team, if you take out Melo that is a 15-20 win team which should be good enough for a top 5 pick
