Knicks · I'd re-sign KOQ now (page 5)

He could make a big difference for OKC, Cleveland, Washington, Portland. It's a shame with the logjam we have because he is a true professional and a great guy to have on a team. He does everything pretty well and it's a shame to lose him.

Phil really fucked us with Noah and Thomas.

how do you know those teams havent called?

With the Knicks exploring what to do with their four-center glut by the Feb. 8 trading deadline, NBA sources say the club has entertained more inquiries about Willy Hernangomez than any other player on their roster. The Knicks do not want to give up the 23-year-old Hernangomez — out of the rotation behind starter Enes Kanter and Kyle O’Quinn — unless they get a prime talent in return. So far they haven’t gotten any concrete offers, but teams that have been high on European players in the past have shown the most interest. The Knicks prefer to deal O’Quinn, who likely will opt out of his contract, and they have gotten only mild interest from a few playoff-contending teams who see him as a backup piece.

so they have called. Teams are looking to poach Willy. Knicks would be stupid to do that unless a real legit asset is coming back like the Net's pick.

Knicks should offer them all and just wait for the best offers and go from there. They can afford to do nothing as well. Let KOQ walk, Kanter opts in and let Noah/Willy fight for backup minutes next year.

Nalod @ 1/9/2018 1:36 PM
Yes, let KOQ walk. Draft picks like the two Clev paid to get Mosgov don't happen anymore.
That's a fallacy. KOQ is good, but there are other bigs playoff teams can get for less.
Kanter sits at the end of games.
Noah's contract is unmovable.

There isn't a knick fan anywhere here that does not want willy to play and thrive.

I've already written about why I think we need to keep KOQ. But if we're not going to keep him, we need to get something for him. Don't just let him walk.

Here we go again. You just said that "teams aren't after him" and "only mild interest" because they see "him as a backup". So how does he command $10MM a year. Y'all are contradicting yourselves to prove your agenda. Which is it? Is he too expensive, or does he have no value?

You trade KO. Bought low sell high.
Kanter probably opts in as he has had an increased role here and success.
Noah you turn to glue or send him to pasture with his buddy in Montanna.

What is your projection for Willy? Big man with slow feet that can't defend.

I would do this also if opportunity presents itself, but its not always that cut and dry.

What if the offers for KOQ suck, but the offers for Kanter are very good? Its always easy to say we should do x,y or z but other teams need to be involved.

KOQ plays a good role here and is part of the defense first share the ball culture they are trying to build. Does taking a crappy deal for a 2nd rounder help us? There is a message there to the players as well, and that matter. KOQ has done everything right. He comes into camp in shape, he gets better every year, he's a hard worker, he's coachable, he's not got great. He's a useful player (overall average/backup quality) and a very good locker room guy. You listen to offers but after that its out of your hands.

As for my projection with Willy? We need more data. Slow feet and bad defense. They said the exact same things about Marc Gasol. Willy needs time to develop. He needs minutes. Willy looks like he can really score, rebound and set great picks. Can he defend or play effective defense in a scheme? You dont know what without extended time. I know he's a good prospect, showed more than flashes at the NBA level and international play and at worst projects to be an effective backup scorer off the bench. Like Kanter's role in OKC. Maybe he's better, maybe he's worse. Thats what building is all about. Internal development. Remember Marc Gasol was a 24 year old rookie.

Hopefully we develop our young guys over time. Sometimes it takes years. Imagine if Marc Gasol was traded for a role player because he was a slow footed plodder.

knicks1248 @ 1/10/2018 1:01 PM
Tough to judge players worth in a contract yr like KOQ. He has a player option, so only a playoff team will want him. what sense would it make for a lottery team to trade for a player who has a opt out unless it was a salary dump. They wont be giving up future pieces for a 3 month rental.

they will have the chance to resign him. He's a good veteran big who plays both ends. That has value for teams.

Would agree you don't trade KO for crap but no one is saying that. The chances he gets more money from someone else and Onicks camt match are quite high. So you don't want to just watch him walk and get nothing in return. So crap may look like roses if in retrospect. A team looking to strengthen their playoff rosters usually over pay. Specially considering he has over achieved this year. Typical KO/most players in their contract year.

As for Willy, think I can trust JH. I have heard the Gasol comparison for 2 years now. Which btw, last I checked is not saying much as ,without Conley, Gasol has them at the bottom. But fair enough, why do you think he is not considered the next Gasol by the guys that watch him every day?

It's a nice stat line. Also, the biggest negative +/- for the team against an opponent that has a super weak front line.

KOQ per 36 includes 6.1 fouls, 4.3 assits for 2.9 TOs ...coming off bench.

Panos, do you consider KOQ a player you could see having solid minutes off bench for a deep playoff team? For me, no. I could see him as the second big off the bench as the backup to the backup big.

If you do resign KOQ, what's the sweetspot #'s (per year and how many years) where he could be a building block player on the Knicks but also very tradeable if he is indeed only considered a temporary player that you need to upgrade when playoffs happen?

+/-
Tonight
KP -15 (second worst)
Kanter -10
KOQ 0 (second best)

Wednesday
KP -3
Kanter -8 (worst on team)
KOQ 7 (best on team)

Just to illustrate.

Definitely not worth it. KOQ is fools gold . Looks good at times but sucks against big time centers and not consistent. Low IQ. Can easily be replaced. I see Kanter sprinting down the court and I see KOQ jogging down the court. Maybe as a back up on a good team he is ok but why pay decent money to a back up on a bad team? Waste of money.

He is going to get at least a decent raise. They were talking about it on the Orlando broadcast. Again he won't be worth it.

We will still pay him, probably after drafting a center 10th overall.

One thing that may work in our favor is he's from the NY area and may want to stay here.

You only keep him if you have other athletic bigs, or stretch bigs.

If the AAV and total years mostly equalizes out with other offers, the advantage NY might have is if he sees a path to being a full time starter

Noah - Gone in some fashion
Hernangomez - Traded
Zinger - Injured
Kanter - One more year when he opts in

If he thinks he'll make about the same money as if he opted in, then he'd just opt out, and sign with the Warriors for the 4 million or so for one year. Next year, the Warriors might not hold onto Pachulia and McGee.

KOQ is a bonehead though. He seems a clueless well intention-ed bonehead, but one nonetheless.
