Knicks · Trading with Lakers.... (page 1)
We have a unicorn, they have Lavar's kid. We have Frank, they have Kuzma.
They still are not very good.
Keep in mind the worst kept secret is they want capspace to starphuch a free agent namely PG13, Lebron, or both.
There pick this year:
2018 first round draft pick to Philadelphia or Boston
L.A. Lakers' 2018 1st round pick to Philadelphia (via Phoenix) or to Boston (via Phoenix to Philadelphia) protected for selections 1 and 6-30; if this pick falls on any of its protected selections and is therefore retained by Philadelphia, then Boston will instead receive the more favorable of Philadelphia's 2019 1st round pick protected for selection 1 and Sacramento's 2019 1st round pick protected for selection 1 (via Philadelphia) and Philadelphia will receive the less favorable or the protected of these two picks [L.A. Lakers-Phoenix, 7/11/2012; Milwaukee-Philadelphia-Phoenix, 2/19/2015; Philadelphia-Sacramento, 7/9/2015; Boston-Philadelphia, 6/19/2017]; the 2019 pick conveyance is included in "2019 first round draft pick from Philadelphia or Sacramento" on Boston Incoming
Celtics might still be raping the NBA for picks!!!
Willy becomes important chip because his upside is still there and his contract buys Lakers time. They have Deng's contract. I don't know if he has anything left in the tank but I think him and Noah have similar deals. Lakers are crowded at the 3, we are anything but. We are crowded at the 5, Lakers are not.
Willy and Noah for Deng and Randle?
CLee is not great, but at 11mil a year he is a good value and tradable.
Clarkson Won't want to come off the bench and in my mind Timmy is our future 2.
Lakers are freaking tanking. They want to land 2-3-4-5 this year. If you want to do a deal with the Lakers you have to look at it thru their lens, not ours.
For a 5 or draft a 5 more likely.

Why not just trade Joakim Noah for Loul Deng to alleviate our logjam at 5 and their logjam at the forward spots.

There was a rumor a while back that they are considering stretching Deng's deal out. If that's the case, I don't think they'd want to swap with us.
Would have to offer Kanter though, with Dougie, Thomas & either KOQ or Baker to match salaries.
Would it be worth it to have 2 dead weight contracts in Noah and Deng for talents like Clarkson & Randle (who we also would have to pay this off season and may want close to max)?
With Clarkson at 25 and Randle at 23 it may be worth it. Clarkson, Frank, Burke?, Hardaway, Dotson, KP, Randle, Willy would give us 7-8 young players to grow together. Add in the 2018 first and 2nd round pick to try and get some athletic defensive forwards. Not bad actually. Would ended up being over the cap going forward but would have all our picks.

I like this move....it is not like Deng and Noah can't play...they are just not worth the $$$.....bu you will be capped out for at least 3 years until they are off the books...you will have to pay Randle and KP this year.....would it be worth.....???
I like it but I am not gunhoe on it based on the cap situation.

It was an article written by someone who has/had no clue about the CBA or the salary cap in place.
Only "Not Likely To Be Earned" incentives can be used to artificially inflate the value of a contract but not actually count against the cap. Those types of incentives have a hard ceiling of 15 percent max. Extending Deng then immediately stretching him would be a game of how much offered would be seen as good faith based on his actual market value.
A) To make the cap savings worth it, the deal would need to run longer than the projected 2X + 1 formula for stretches, which means Deng would be in violation of the Over 38 Rule.
B) If the Lakers even tried it, the CBA provisions would dock them actual cap space, fines and draft picks. It would clear circumvention of the cap in place. This would trigger an automatic "Audit" of the entire franchise for violations against the cap. All NBA teams create non cap incentives for their players ( owners have friends, who do business with some of the players, etc) I don't think future Laker LeBron James, who is running a not so secret agency in Klutch Sports, and Magic Johnson, already mixed up with that big Dodger money, want that kind of scrutiny. Not to mention the dirty blood money associated with the Buss fortune.
C) Every tax paying and repeater tax paying team would raise holy hell. Rob Pelinka would need to lose his job in any capacity within the league forever. Even if the Lakers got away with it, if Pelinka called any other team, they'd never pick up the phone. The other teams would stonewall the Lakers until Pelinka was dragged behind the barn and shot.
The functional deal is sending out Lonzo Ball along with Clarkson and Deng for expirings and a late 1st round pick coming back. That's about as good as the Lakers will get it. LBJ is not going to sit season after season with LaVar Ball in his face. Not going to happen. Also LBJ would want to replace Ball with someone like Mike Miller. Sounds stupid right? So that actually is something LBJ would do. Because he's a blithering idiot.
Can't say that Indy would have taken ball with the second pick last year, but kind of strange in hindsight Lakers would not go big after PG13 and give up a good package.
Unless they thought he'd come via free agency.
Clippers can go after PG13 too.
Im not worried about anyone but knicks. My take is small moves is how you get to a big one and they are few and far between.
But small moves do add up one way or another.

I don't think so either; LAL is atrocious. Kuzma's good, Nance is pretty good, and if Ball can fix his busted ass shot he'll be good too. If LAL could clear enough space to sign another max player alongside Lebron then it might make sense.

Some minor cash incentives might be all it takes to grease the wheels on a move like that. Noah and Deng make the same salary, so why not get $500,000 before using the stretch provision? They might not even need to use the stretch provision since Noah doesn't come with the same demands for playing time that Deng does.

I'm looking at hoopshype and according to them Noah makes a bit more than Deng. Not a lot, just about $1M though so it probably doesn't make sense for LA.

I have the difference at about $600,000 (Noah at $17.8M to Deng at $17.2M) but given the Lakers interest in cutting costs, any additional amount would be a non-starter. It's a shame though because I do think both teams might be better served swapping one another's headaches though I'd admit that Deng probably is the better player at this point.

Deng is generally healthier and a wing. Wings, even broken down ones, are more valuable.
