I look at it this way. We got 3 first rounders (DSJr, 1 unprotected 1s.t rounder and a lightly protected 1st rounder) and cap space for KP to sign 2 max free agents. I think we did ok.
CrushAlot @ 2/1/2019 8:46 PM
Marks on the Woj podcast today made an interesting point. He said that a team like the Nets could offer KP a 2+1 deal that the KNicks would match. The knicks would be in a compromised position from that point on trying to trade him.

Agreed. The two first rounders made me happier about it. Hell KP may only play one year in Dallas so that 2021 pick could be a lottery pick possibly

lol, all of these free agents are head cases to a certain extent.

KD and Kwahi should take a long hard look at playing with each other and taking a little less than max. This is a blank slate to build something special. But it won't happen with dumbstarfukking for Kyrie or Boogie.

KD and Kawhi essentially play the same position.

If KD wants to take less than the max he should just stay with the Warriors. Kyrie and AD are good friends. Some speculation that they will end up on the same team (Lakers or KNicks). I get the dislike for Cousins. Kyrie is an amazing talent. Only concern is health.

Kyrie has never played defense, Cousins is unpredictable. I don't want either of them, they can go to the lakers all they want. Durant may be fine is GS, doesn't look like he belongs. I thought he would just stay but the more I see them play the less I think that will happen. He looks out of sorts, don't know if all the players in GS embraced him

So dri KP and AD that didn't stop people from drooling. KD and KL are much more versatile and can play positions basketball.

Young players with upside and cap space are two of the most important thing in a salary cap league. The bright side:

* We have Smith/Frank/Dotson from 2017 draft
* We have Trier/Knox/Mitch from 2018
* A likely top 5 pick plus a 2nd rounder coming in 2019
* $70M+ of cap space
* All of our future draft picks plus 2 additional 1st rounders from Dallas.
* We're rid of the immovable Lee and Hardaway contracts. It's even better than the Mets trading Swarzak/Bruce in the Cano deal.
* We don't have to go through an uncertain season with KP playing with a QO.
* We don't have to fret at all about whether we want to give a max deal to a 7'3 guy coming off a major knee injury.

The potential is now huge to build a sustainable winning team. The BIG IF is July 1st. As long as they hold out for only the best FAs and don't overpay for the second tier we'll be fine. If we don't get who we want, just fill the roster with 1 year deals and try again next off season. Meanwhile your young players have another year to develop and prove themselves. I'm confident this front office has their heads on straight about this. Maybe I'm naive but looking forward to the off season...

Ahhh, I knew we were going to disagree when I saw the comment about the Cano deal. The Mets got destroyed in that trade. Paying Cano $20 mil a year in his age 38-40 years is a nightmare. The Wilpons hold the Cespedes/Wright contracts over the payroll's head and that's while they're getting a good chunk of that back from insurance. That deal will probably end up costing them deGrom or Thor long-term.

Here's the problem with the young players and cap space logic...the cold, hard reality is that our young players aren't that good. Knox is the only one out of that group that could be and he's got a long way to go. The others could possibly be role players but there's a million guys just like them out there in this league. DSJ hasn't arrived yet, if he ever will, and has already sulked about a much better player being more ball-dominant.

The draft picks were mediocre and with being so far in the future aren't really going to help us out much in a trade anytime soon They hold some value in a different sense but not as the centerpiece for who we gave up.

Getting rid of THJ and Lee's contract were the centerpiece, which it was nice that we did, but that should not be the biggest thing you get back for a guy like Porzingis. It's almost like the Mavs in negotiations basically said "well, think of it like we're getting you Durant or Kyrie too!" and the Knicks said, "derrr, OK!". That could happen with the space, but it shouldn't be part of the direct trade value you're getting from someone.

My issue with this will always be the value. We traded the guy at his absolute lowest value and then somehow got even less back. It was a salary dump and a couple of mediocre at best assets. And then the credit the FO gets for "ridding" ourselves of those terrible contracts...when they're the ones who gave them out! I wish I could have that kind of lack of accountability at my job.

If you’re a Mets fan and aren’t psyched by what they accomplished this offseason then I don’t even know what to say. The Cano deal included the best young closer in the game who they’ll pay almost nothing for the next 5 years. Getting rid of the terrible Bruce and Swarzak contracts plus 20M cash coming to the Mets offsets what’s owed to Cano. I love that trade and almost everything else their GM did this offseason. Go Mets!

If the Knicks end up in free agency with someone like Kemba and Middleton getting max contracts then this trade is a colossal failure and we are stuck on the treadmill for at least the next 5 years.

It’s a fun game, just name 2 players and say max contact and then get angry.

All you do is get angry. Its possible things turn out great this offseason even though it doesnt fit your negative narrative

It's an example. Would you be happy with giving those 2 guys max contracts?

You sit here and act like the Knicks haven't been a failure in free agency and on the court for the last 20 years.

Everything is possible.

But swinging for the fences and hitting a groundball to first every time isn't the way to build a successful franchise. Sometimes all you need is a single.

JamesKPolk @ 2/1/2019 11:34 PM
Negative narrative!

*Looks at Knicks record since 2000*

"Nearly 300 games under .500"

I apologize for my negativity.

KP basically said that he was gonna sign a QO then walk unless they traded him. We ended up with 2 firsts,a recent lottery pick,and ability to sign two top free agents. Not sure what more they could of done

Dennis Smith Jr isn't a good prospect.

The 2 firsts - especially rhe one in 2021 - will not be anything more than a mid-round pick.

You could have gotten better young players and better picks for Porzingis but we went for the cap space over the future.
