The team you want to be a centerpiece for is in position to possibly draft talent superior to you.
In position to sign FA who is superior to you.
And has a bunch of players who will be a part of the solution.
And you are not yourself sure on how you body will sustain the NBA game.
You see that the new FO is set on their goals which see you as a centerpiece but still replaceable or tradable.
It is easy to lose you balance and rely on old brother to make decision for you.
Doncic is nice feet to you and not competing force at forward position opposite to KD, AD or Zion.
Dallas is not NY with its relentless media and fans pressure. Especially for dude coming for small provincial city in small quiet country.
KP was not made for being the man in NY. Not many are but he was not at all.

so true

But at the end of the day isn’t this what he ultimately wanted...which was help...

What he ultimately wanted was a miracle because, well, he is a unicorn afterall. He was drafted by a team in rebuild mode. Thats how things work usually. Sorry KP that you werent drafted by GS in the midst of their dominant hold on the NBA, and screw you Janis just for the sake of it. Now how do smart teams rebuild again? Through the draft while hopefully amassing assets. Should we feel bad for KP because the pick we used to get him did not get traded to a contender for an over the hill player past their prime? Prolly not, screw you Janis again for being so dense, exibit A: 76ers. What he wanted was instant gratification and Janis convinced him that he deserved such. Janis you suck btw.

Now he is out of the greatest city in the world and in Dallas. I am sure if the Knicks told him that they were trading him to Dallas if he didn’t commit that he would have committed. Good riddance. Still can’t believe the first thing he put on social media was the handshake with Doncic. If he follows the same path with his health the Knicks should be getting a very good pick.
Good Riddance indeed. He has had one good year and a ACL injury so its not like we owe him a damn thing.

Not even a year...a month and a half...he started to look tired by Late Dec....teams start playing physical getting into his legs....that was always going to be the problem and Mills and Perry made the smart move....had they gave him the max and he got hurt again...this would have been stat 2.0

True. Plus he would get destroyed by other big guys. Jokic used to destroy him everytime they played. Doesnt help that he cant rebound either

I think the system in Dallas with Luka will maximize his strengths....they may get someone in FA....but the West is dog fight...does he have the stamina and will he hold up....

The first 2-3 maths he may not look like the same player..remember when Shump came back he looked like a shell of himself until we were in the playoffs I believe..

Dallas took a gamble. Cuban can afford it and he likes to gamble.
They can get the jack pot or get nothing. No middle ground.
Knicks FO decided to go for sure things like cap space, picks, bunch of young talent with high probability that some of it will work.
KP could be part of this equation but he decided to fined the easy way out.
Sometimes it works but most of the time it is not.

Not sure I would call anything we did or acquired a "sure thing."
FrenchFreak @ 2/3/2019 9:16 AM
The more I think about the Knicks position this coming offseason if they DIDN’T make this trade, the more I like the trade.

Without making this trade we’d be looking at a disgruntled KP playing on a QO and you’d still have Lee and Hardaway contracts meaning you wouldn’t have had room for KD’s max slot. And why would KD want to come here anyway, with the team’s one superstar playing on a QO? In that scenario there is a pretty big chance that KP was going to leave for nothing in a year. Is it possible the Knicks could have done better in a trade involving KP? Maybe, but I think it’s becoming more clear they needed to trade him one way or the other.

And I’m not just holding out for KD either. This is probably a topic for a separate thread but there are tons of ways to spend 70M in annual cap space that don’t involve KD that still make the Knicks a playoff team for the next several seasons. If we’re holding out to be the next super team then we’ll probably be disappointed. Having endured decades of Knicks nonsense I’ll be happy with adding a couple stars that make us a playoff team for the next several years while keeping our picks and developing our young guys. The current front office seems focused on doing things right and I look forward to it continuing. Personally I can’t wait for July 1st.

No, it's the Knicks who are putting themselves in position to land Giannis. For all the talk of KD, I believe the end game is a Giannis-to-NY scenario. With our cap room, youths, and picks, we are getting close to having what it takes to swing a deal ala Davis, though Giannis doesn't strike me as someone who will pull a Davis. He's got more class.

I forgot about Longstaff being fired by Phil. The Knicksfilm school guy mentioned it as one of the factors that caused the rift between KP and the Knicks.

Sure thing not as specific players but as NBA basketball assets.
Goal is to increase the probability of success and reduce the inevitable human personal volatility.
Nothing exiting about it. It is nothing exiting about grinding to success.
Being successful because of luck is much more cool. But this mostly and naturally happened with somebody else.

Interesting take. Clearing cap out without sending Frank or Knox, or a future pick might have Been a problem. Pels likely wanted too much for AD and would have left us without being able to sign anyone. That Dallas took back so much salary and team is confident they can add assets via free agency then you have a decision to make. Can’t wait until off season to do that deal.
I applaud the decisiveness of both the knicks and the Mav’s to move on this. IT took balls.

To be fair we also traded away KPs best friend that season too. Cold blooded!

The Next Episode

The mavericks are happy because they have a marketable duo
The media is criticizing the knicks because of all of the IF'S that we are setting ourselves up for
But its only fair to look at what the mavericks are doing too. There are two sides to this

What IF Porzingis leaves after the Qualifying offer
What IF Porzingis isn't happy playing second fiddle to Luka
What IF Porzingis gets injured again

KP when healthy can't get past mid season without feeling "tired". Even when rested he is absolutely shut down by draymond green. He has to match up against bigs like aldridge, gasol, capela, jokic, adams, nurkic, gobert, KAT way more often in the west.

They also only have three first round picks in the next 6 years and are capped out until 2020 and then I am not sure where they will be at if they resign KP to a max.
Getting off 40 mil in salary, moving an injury prone player that doesn't want to be here before giving him a max deal, getting two first round picks and a lottery talent that the team wanted was a huge get. Media criticizing the Knicks are taking the easy route of, Same old Knicks, this is so KNicksy etc. This was a great trade by the front office.
ccinflushing @ 2/3/2019 11:19 AM
I think one of the ironies of the KP trade is that instead of being in a situation where things are at rock bottom and can only improve with the Knicks, KP is going to Dallas where:

1. He and Luka are the only young starter level talent (a barren roster)
2. There is limited means of improving as:

a) they won't have cap space until the 2020/21 season, which is a bad free agent class
b) they can't trade any first draft picks until four or five years down the line, as they've already traded three first round picks

so at best they'll be mired in mediocrity and if they're bad it might not benefit them .. I can see Luka in a situation similar to Anthony Davis in five or six years time

I think this is a reasoned take from Nick Wright

Its ironic the media is saying "Same Old Knicks" when in reality they usually bash us for doing what Dallas just did. In the past we have taken back bad contracts and given first round picks. Now we are the ones benefitting from desperation and we are still getting killed lol

Spencer from Filmschool and the Stepien said today on the film school podcast that he has heard Durant is coming to the Knicks. He said a guy affiliated with the Warriors and a guy affiliated with the Knicks have told him he is coming. He said both guys have given him information in the past that was accurate. Not confirmation but another indication that it might happen. Seems a lot like last year when the Lakers cleared up cap.

Hope this is true but it worries me that all this stuff is leaking like this...makes me worry about collusion or maybe people are just making shit up or just going on a gut-feeling. KD strikes me a person who would keep this very close to the vest. Why would tell random affiliates know this type of info?
