Knicks · Build the youth - backup plan (page 1)

ankurk @ 6/3/2019 8:45 PM
Trade Frank + Future pick for Reddish

Deandre 1 year 16 mil
Beverly 1 year 8 mil
Danny Green, Reddick, Aminu all 1 year 15 mil
= Total 69 mil

DSJ/Bev
Barrett/Reddick
Reddish/Green
Knox/Aminu
Mitch/Deandre

Let the kids learn from the vets and build a deep team for whatever happens. Let them grow together

CrushAlot @ 6/3/2019 9:02 PM
That would be a fun team and a nice backup plan.
PresIke @ 6/3/2019 9:37 PM
I'd rate the chance of something like this at about 12%
jskinny35 @ 6/3/2019 10:01 PM
But it's a good idea!!
knickstorrents @ 6/3/2019 10:59 PM
I like it
Marv @ 6/3/2019 11:09 PM
it’s a waste of unprecedented cap space. right now is the time to afford 2 stars while retaining all our youth now and going forward. don’t blow it on all these 2nd and 3rd raters.
Nalod @ 6/4/2019 7:55 AM
ITs a good plan but Use the cap space to take back salary with he incentive of picks or yoot. Can’t let the space got to waste. If not win now then use it to gain assets.
Someone will want to move a contract and pay to do so.
I’m partial to Frank. No need to trade him and a pick as we don’t need the salary space he occupies.
If its a talent thing, then its a different conversation. Draft day trade was to free up cap space.

GREAT PLAN
knicks180nyc @ 6/4/2019 9:30 AM
it's a nice plan in theory, but i doubt those guys would want to be here just to mentor young players. also what happens if the knicks win 31 games and end up with the 10th or 11th pick? if they don't sign anybody i rather they just play the young guys for a whole season and possibly end up with a top 5 pick again.

It's called the backup plan if we don't get the top guys to sign with us this offseason which there's a very good chance of that happening. We have to spend a certain amount of our cap which i think is around the $60 mil mark so the best thing to do is exactly what the OP said which is use the money on one year deals and keep building through the draft.

not so sure this franchise could sustain a repeat of last year. that was supposed to be a one-time deal (and a good one i thought) in response to kp being out for a year and us taking a run at zion. at worst we were looking at a return of kp with a year and a half of rehabbing/training, a very high draft pick, a max FA slot, timmy and youth with a year of development under them. i don't think there's going to be the same level of understanding and support for now going back to another year like last year, especially when we have $74M earmarked to do something about it.

it's a poor backup plan because you don't GAIN anything. If you completely strike out, you absorb some contracts with first rounders attached - this would be a minimum type plan C.

Reddick, Green, Beverly types are not coming when they can get similar'ish type deals on playoff teams or their current teams. You don't go out and find 5 vets who all want playing time and also announce that you are going to grow the young kids.

Good point. You definitely could bring in some high character vets with bad contracts that came with an asset.

The prevailing rumor mill is if we sign two max FA's we don't have money for Trier and Dotson. If we need to go the yoot route the resulting decider is has this FO, who given up on Frank or has some other team made a compelling offer.

I like Reddish and his potential but not sure at what price I want to pay for that pick or where he gets drafted.
Mudiay really showed a lot of improvement last year. Is there still an upside to him further? He surprised a lot of people. Why? He did things we have not seen before. Amazing concept! Players not replicating previous season!!
Frank as a Bruce Bowen type? Defense hustle, good decisions, moves the ball but he has to have an NBA shot. He has yet to show this.
Whats next? He grew to 6-8 and his wing span is 8 foot? My expectation is he gets traded on draft night. I don't know his value.

GustavBahler @ 6/4/2019 11:11 AM
Dont forget quality role players. Even if the Knicks dont see any good opportunities for Max players in free agency. Good role players are needed on every contender. The bench isnt anywhere deep enough yet.

If Perry/Mills can bring in some good role players, without paying star prices, they should. If it takes more than a one or two year deal, so be it. The closer the Knicks are to putting a contender on tbe court, the more interest they should get from quality FAs. Doesnt have to be either big ticket players, or recent draft picks, on the Knicks checklist. Build where they can.

Not correct. Because we didn't get the #1 pick DOT fits under the salary cap and there is a way to fit Trier based on his restriction (give or take... could be why Knicks are looking to move Frank though).

right... if we whiff we should whiff fast. At that point if we do whiff we become helpers. Take on a player like Crabbe or Gallo for Bkn/LAC using our cap space and we get a pick back.

Agree with Marv, if we whiff dont sign middle tier guys. Get growable assets back

Gallo would be a great guy to get in that scenario. If healthy, you might be able to trade him at the deadline for a second asset.

If we whiff then pair youth with appropriate mentors. Maybe rose>Beverly for dsj, bringing in Vince Carter for Barrett would be great

I love Frank. I just love his game and potential. His shot will come. Just have to be patient.
