Knicks · knicks tell ATL to kick rocks (page 1)

The New York Knicks have declined a recent trade offer that would have sent the No. 3 overall draft pick to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for the eighth and 10th picks, a source told ESPN's Jonathan Givony.

The Hawks have been aggressively exploring trade scenarios in which they would package the Nos. 8 and 10 picks to move up in Thursday's NBA draft, the source told Givony.

But the Knicks were not interested in moving down to acquire Atlanta's picks, according to the source.

Although Duke's RJ Barrett has been projected as the No. 3 pick, New York plans to hold a workout Wednesday for Vanderbilt guard Darius Garland, according to Givony.

Garland recently told ESPN that he is the "best" guard in the draft; he has been widely viewed as a top-five pick. He was projected to go No. 5 overall to Cleveland in ESPN's latest mock draft, but Caesars Sportsbook currently lists Garland as a minus-170 favorite to be selected No. 4.

New Orleans is considering the possibility of trading the No. 4 pick to Atlanta for Nos. 8 and 10, the source told Givony.

ESPN reported Saturday that the Pelicans will acquire the fourth pick as part of the blockbuster trade that will send Anthony Davis to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Minnesota, Boston and Chicago are three more teams that are looking at the possibility of trading up to the No. 4 pick, with Garland in mind, according to Givony.

The FO was smart to decline Atl...The 1st 3 picks are easy. After that, Garland, Hunter, and Culver are the next best prospects and all of them will be off the board before 8. Too much uncertainty in the 8 and 10 spots...No thx.

totally agree. we're looking for potential stars more than depth at this point.

Yeah I agree, but you always have to remember, they said the same thing with guys like Kawhi, donovan mitchell, PG13, to name a few.

IMO it's the really tough to gauge what a player will turned into in the NBA. The only outlet that gets it right 85% of the time is DRAFTEXPRESS..every other expert is 50/50

you can draft talent and walk away with D russel, or you can draft fit (like san an always does) and walk away with kawhi..

Made sense to trade with ATL if we’d signed kyrie and KD, but once that went south it was back to going with bpa

Saw another rumor that the Knicks tried to get Atlanta to throw in Kevin Huerter with the picks and that's when any potential deal fell apart.

We all watched RJ put up 23, 8 & 4 as an 18 yr old on a Duke team that played against the very best comp in the college BB. We also watched him play on a team that had poor spacing and he was still able to put up numbers that we never saw from a freshman. His game translates better in the NBA due to the spacing and if anybody has the potential to be a star player, he'll be there @ #3.

I agree. We have a lot of youngins already. We need a player that can become an All-Star. RJ has the potential to not only be an All-Star but a Superstar.

thats not true, we are the knicks dumbest franchise in the league. we do not make good decisions like that.

Uhm I disagree. We are looking for depth and assets to land a star or to try to grow from within.

But ATL's offer sucked. I'd do it if we could also get Huerter like was rumored, but not if it's just for the 8 and 10. Grant Williams and DeAndre Hunter should still be available at around those positions and they would be decent IMO

Can't see Hunter being available @ 8. With that said, why draft decent when a potential allstar is available @ 3

Exactly. Im really happy with Perry. He didnt fold under the pressure and offer every asset we had for the next decade for Davis and he recognizes that this draft has 3 big prospects at the top

If Lakers don't make that move Lebron asks for a trade? Then you burned Russell, BroPez, and Randle for no reason.
34 year old Lebron trade value has to be to a team that wants him and he wants to be there.
Im glad we tried at discount to get him. Im glad we did not pay full retail. In effect Lakers were bidding against themselves. Griffin got the best deal ever for an in prime star.

This is going to sound weird but the lakers really that desperate to win a chip with a bookcase full of them? Would it be better to build a sustainable long run? Knicks I can see doing this because its just a freaking 50 year thing soon but Lakers have a heritage still.

In Triplethreat terms its like they have history of being with many supermodels for years and years! Then making one last desperate move to have a one nighter with one vs. a long meaningful relationship with a very beautiful women.
Is one night really worth it?
Knicks1248 wants that. Ok, if he never had one I can understand. But Lakers made huge bet on getting Lebron and then have been shabby on everything else. With this opportunity to get Davis, they just lost control of their draft for the next 7 years and paid epic price.

And that one night stand is not a sure thing!!!

Lakers are taking one of the biggest gambles since the infamous nets, boston trade. Obviously they have Lebron but he started showing signs of breaking down which makes sense considering how much basketball he has played in 10 years. Davis is great but he is so injury prone. Pelicans made out like bandits on this trade. Pretty much everyone(except one person lol) is breathing a sigh of relief that the knicks passed

If the plan was to build for a long sustainable run, then they should have never signed 33 yr old LeBron. The moment you sign the best player of this generation, you should be obligated to build a roster that can win now! Also, most of these long sustainable runs dont end with a 'chip. Portland has had a nice sustainable run for years, but that team is in no position to win a chip anytime soon. The Bulls looked like they were set up for a long run, but Rose has a career changing injury causing the Bulls have to hit the reset button and they are still struggling to recover from. You just never know.

Lakers are in the business of stacking the hardware, they saw an opportunity with LeBron, and they are going all in. They have a window now, a small one, but still an opportunity to add another one.

smart move by Perry

I fully expect that the Knicks will be getting a lot more calls with teams trying to fleece that pick

Lebron was playing at a phenomenal before he got hurt. First time in his career. He has played 1500 games, and his run has been amazing. Mt Rushmore. 1st team.
Sustainable? Amazing how much he carried teams until last year. He has his Robin. Question is what else can they get.
Lakers are not finished roster. Interesting as hell. I don't blame Lakers for doing what they are doing. This was the plan. Might as well see it thru. Buss kids can get some bling without daddy then sell it for stupid money and be happy. Dudes will trip over themselves to buy the ultimate toy. Own the lakers? That's plush!

So the Knicks turn down an over the hill starter making loads of bucks.

BigDaddyG wrote:Saw another rumor that the Knicks tried to get Atlanta to throw in Kevin Huerter with the picks and that's when any potential deal fell apart.

Untrue

8 and 10 are not enough in value to get 3. Not in this draft, not in all of modern NBA draft history. 3rd is a Tier 2 pick. 8 and 10 are Tier 4 and maybe Tier 5 level picks. Most trades will involved a move against a single tier, usually not against multiple tiers ( i.e. moving from 10 to 12 or 5 to 7 is more feasible for teams)

The disagreement came over what MORE plus 8 and 10 it would take to get the third, not that anything at all would be a deal breaker.

Mirror Test it. If the Knicks had 8 and 10 and traded it for the 3rd, how many people here would be jumping for joy and saying the Hawks got fucking hosed ( because they would be getting hosed)

If 8 and 10 were enough to get the 3rd, you'd see more trades like that all along NBA draft history. But you don't, because it doesn't work that way.
