Knicks · My Way Too Early Take on RJ Barrett (page 5)

Just figured out who RJ reminds me of, Renaldo Balkman.

Lol. Come on man. Barrett right now is better than Balkman every was and I liked Balkman. Barrett's ceiling is going to be based on whether he learns to shoot but for right now, he should continue focusing on rebounding, passing, and scoring in the paint.

Yes he is, just in looks and kind of in the way he runs.

I think they're scarred by the end-of-career Jalen Rose we got in that IT era trade, where you knew Larry Brown was going to hate him but Larry Brown insisted we trade for him anyways even though he didn't fit the team at all.

Exactly

Chandler @ 7/11/2019 9:46 AM
I hope we play him at the 2 and not the 3

As someone else mentioned in another thread his game feeds off of craftiness, and I think he exploits any size advantage well. He should be attacking and posting up (and working like a dog to improve his jumper)

Jalen Rose was a solid NBA player. What scares me is RJ can't shoot at all. If he ends up a high usage player he better be able to shoot or give out 8 assists a game.

Yep. I'm afraid he could also turn into Evan Turner. Turner is a guy who can be a secondary or tertiary ball-handler, but doesn't have great burst. Turner, like Barrett, also has a junpshot that looks like it should go in more than it does. Turner was the #2 pick in what was considered a stronger draft in 2010. A Jalen Rose type career doesn't seem that bad.

I forgot he went that high. I didn’t think Barrett was that poor of an athlete

I think RJ is a solid athlete. He just doesn't have that burst the superstars have. Isaiah used Ron Artest and Paul Piece as example during today's summer league telecast. It's not a perfect comparison, but I see what he is getting at. RJ is going to have to learn to set guys up and use his body more at the NBA level.

the kid can flat out get to the hoop. He has shown a lot of strength despite being so young and will get stronger. His passing and rebounding is another great sign. I personally believe his shooting will get better.

i dont care about shooting right now..can he create on the dribble against nba players...I watched him off ball movement there is none..he might end up being a player who needs the ball who dribble dribble dribble

Im sure he will improve his shooting some too but its unverving to watch him not be able to blow by guys who will be playing in whatever league the Ball brothers played in. He just doesn't have that explosion you expect the 3rd pick in the draft to have. Doesn't it limit his ceiling some? He is going to really have to improve his passing to become a star.

Not really. I think some are too hung up on “explosiveness “. The kid is athletic crafty and he does have speed even if it’s not mind blowing. He still gets to the hoop at will

Since some were ready to call RJ a bust after 1 summer league game, can go to the other extreme and call him a future hall of famer after his near triple double in his final game?!

There is nothing about the way RJ shoots, dribbles, passes, looks or runs that is similar to Balkman

Solid point. Maybe Lee Nailon is a better comparison.

No. You're trash if you can't get a triple double in Summer League, close or not lol Glad he felt more comfortable at the tail end. It's just SL, but it's still good to see.
