Knicks · Zion getting taller (page 1)

The New Orleans Pelicans believe Zion Williamson is still growing.

David Griffin offered the tidbit when asked about Williamson's weight.

"Yeah, I don’t know that we can determine a weight yet," said Griffin. "Zion’s still growing. One of the things that’s lost in this whole process is that, like Jaxson Hayes, Zion is still getting taller. We’re not exactly sure what he’ll look like in the end. So a playing weight is not what you look for. What you look for is to be in top condition, to have the kind of core strength and stability that you need to control all of the incredible torque that his athleticism can generate. That’s really where Aaron Nelson and his team are going to focus their efforts, because Zion is one of those kids, like LeBron, he’s not going to lift a weight because he’ll add muscle and weight so quickly. So what you have to do with him is do everything you can from a core and stability standpoint to give him more ability to control what he already has in terms of strength and speed. So that’ll be a big part of the focus for Zion from a training standpoint. Nutritionally, he’ll certainly be with our nutritionist and we’ll put him in a position to have a (personal) chef. As you pointed out, New Orleans is not an easy place to live and eat when you’re a 19-year-old kid and can literally eat anything you want. There can be some temptation there, so we’ll certainly try to put him in a position to be surrounded by more of the right decisions (nutritionally). But, for the most part, we don’t know what he’ll end up looking like because he’s still growing. When he entered Duke he was clearly shorter than R.J. Barrett, and I think you saw (at the Vegas Summer League) he was clearly taller than R.J. Barrett. So it’ll be interesting to see where that goes."

Cartman718 @ 7/30/2019 8:52 AM
Just how tall, we’ll see. Is he going to end up being LeBron size
franco12 @ 7/30/2019 11:41 AM
he may still be growing, but not sure that changes what his BMI is right now.
Knicksfan @ 7/31/2019 10:01 PM
Ehmm he didn’t look taller. If anything they looked the same height, only Zion obviously is bigger.
CrushAlot @ 7/31/2019 10:48 PM
Frank is 6’7 now. Knox is still growing. Have to think RJ and Iggy are still growing. Guys are getting drafted really young.
Knixkik @ 8/1/2019 12:08 AM
I don’t really buy him growing tbh. He’s been listed at 6’7 since sophomore year. He’s built and matured physically far beyond his years. Most guys still growing at age 19 look young, like Frank. I guess it’s possible but I feel like it’s just what everyone says now about their rookie. Most guys are done growing taller by 16 and only a very small percentage are still growing at 19.

Why do you think they are all growing. How many people do you know personally that actually got taller after 19? I know none.

Yeah, it’s actually not common from what i’ve heard. Most boys are done by 18.

and human beings that are 6'7", even less common!

I tried to google something to find something definitive about taller people growing later. I know that in reading about various players, they've talked about their growth plates still being open.

I think we're looking at such a narrow subset of humans that, yes, they're naturally taller and continue to get taller longer than us normal shrimp people!

Nalod @ 8/1/2019 9:06 AM
We just going on what we read. Barrett looks mature for his age but if Zion grew, then he grew. Photos are sometimes deceiving. I read last summer Frank was still not done growing. Same for knox. A body that is still developing does perform different than one that is mature. Perhaps it is why franks fans still have hope.
I have said this before, Seeing them both in Charlotte Last year in person up close it was very apparent how young they looked physically. Zion does have a baby face and maybe he did grow.
There is a lot of hype to this kid. Maybe its good for him he is not in NYC.

I am 6’4”. I was done by 18. Maybe a few CMs afterwards for my arms but that’s really it.

Some people can go to 19 and rarely to 20 but we are talking CMs or more likely MMs. Not inches.

this would appear to be a tailor-made question for the expertise of triplethreat.

If you google Zions history you will see he’s been listed at 6’7 for years. Maybe he grew from 6’6 to a legit 6’7 in the last 3 years but he didn’t stop growing at 15 then suddenly start again at 18/19. Frank legitimately grew which is so rare. I’m guessing Zion has been done growing since 16 or so. Any comparison height wise to R.J. is just how they are standing or the angle.

Nalod @ 8/1/2019 10:40 AM
The contrast was that RJ appeared to be taller and then not so.
It is rumored that RJ is shrinking?
Zion's build does not enhance the appearance of height.
Over the years I have seen that combine measurements are as standard as one can get.

Old Nalod recall sitting in the 10th row as MSG, forget the year but Manute Bol and Mugsy bogues both started for the Wizards.
Them standing together was a sight.

Bigger weight (muscles or not) depressing height as the bones and joints are pushed down by gravity.
Skinny build people have natural tendency to grow taller.
Body-building at young age is determent to grows.
This are just scientific facts.

anrst @ 8/1/2019 4:36 PM
he looked short and fat and got his shot stuffed by kevin knox
franco12 @ 8/1/2019 10:58 PM
the other thing I'll throw out is maybe they want people to think he is taller than he is- just for intimidation/value.

Like Barkley was listed at what, 6'6"? And I tend to recall he was more like 6'4" or 5".

That, and maybe they want people to not think he is fat!
