Knicks · RJ Barrett 1st Quarter Yesterday (page 1)

That is what I think we can expect from him if he's locked in and given the opportunity to run some offense. He was getting to the basket, finding cutters, and grabbing rebounds and getting out on the break quickly. Shooting will remain a concern early in his career, but his open floor style of play is perfectly suited for today's game if he can some floor spacers around him. Mitch is the perfect lob threat and rim runner for him too. We have to fill out the rest of the lineup this summer and at least see what we have with Barrett getting some playmaking responsibility.

C Robinson
PF Gallinari (FA) or Jerami Grant (FA) or Bertans (FA) (Get rid of Randle to a team willing to absorb contract)
SF Barrett
SG Hield (via trade) or Joe Harris (FA) (these should be our 2 primary targets)
PG VanVleet (FA) or Cole Anthony (draft) or Haliburton (draft) (PGs who can play off the ball)

Some combination of these players is how you build by adding guys who can play off the ball. We have 3 positions to fill this summer and hopefully we do this the right way. Barrett has big time potential if given the opportunity and freedom.

Not sure about who to put him with but the potential is seen. Rookies are inconsistent and at 19 he is fantastic!!!! Most rooks we worry about "when he fills out he needs to go the rim"........
Our teenager is a bonafide strong finisher!
Robinson reeks of upside. He is having a very good season! As we read he is holding up and getting stronger. That's huge! Not breaking down physically.
Randle frustrates but I contend its not good if he is the best player on the floor for us. Miller has deemphasized him which makes him more dangerous.
As for the rest, I suspect we'll draft a guard and one of Frank or DSjr will be gone in some fashion.

RJ & Mitch are the only thing that keeps me clinging on to hope. They seem like high character guys hope they don't demand a trade because of our dysfunction , at a certain point you want to win.RJ has been a winner his whole life dude went to Duke who has an amazing coach and well oiled machine. Now he is losing nightly being paired up with low IQ players.

These guys are really young. I'm sure they will stay patient. But we at least need to start putting guys around them that bring out the best in them. That will buy some time.

RJ is a SG. Playing him at SF takes away a physical mismatch vs. most guards

I think RJ is a swiss army knife right now. Can beat slow forwards off the dribble....and over power small guards. So it might be too early to put a label on him so soon. But I love his floor maturity and IQ....his fearlessness. And how he competes or steps up to any challenge. How he's impacting the game at 19 is what I would've expected from Knox this year.

playing him all over the place is the same mistake we made with Frank. swiss army knife is like saying jack of all trades master of none. Let RJ continue to master his craft abusing smaller, weaker guards.

(Frank who is at a whole other, lesser tier of talent needs to learn how to abuse smaller pgs, not how to defend SF when in a pickle)

I can see that. Honestly I don't know what his best position is and I don't think it matters. He fits more of the point forward mold, but I get the mismatch advantages at the 2. But someone like Joe Harris is basically a G/F anyways, so I don't think what position matters so much as making sure he has a lights out shooter at the other wing position.

Its a good argument. To me a "SG" should be an elite shooter. Bradley Beal. If RJ can get his outside shot improved he can develop into an elite SF.
I see this kid with a potential Ron Artest like build in a few years. Ron was 21 most of his rookie season.
For me its not were he is now, its where is he going to play. This kid is so good going to the rim I see him as a potential elite 3.
If he is a closer, don't matter what you call him in the last few minutes of a game. The ball is in his hands as Point Forward, Guard, what ever.............
Other than him and perhaps mitch I don't see anyone else untouchable.

I see him similar to Jimmy Butler eventually, and I still don't know if Butler is a SG or SF.

I'm the same way. I write right handed and have good right handed form. But i'm a lefty that made a college career as a shooter and wouldn't dare shoot with my right in a game.
