Knicks · NYC Point Guards (page 1)

The PG spot is a position many Knicks fans ( including myself ) would like to see some improvement/ additions at some level. For me Frankie is the only decent prospect we currently have. This in mind I thought of Knicks pg of the past. ( lockdown boredom!! ) Many consider Frazier the greatest. Who would be considered the best Knick POINT GUARD actually from NY? Jackson / Starbury / Strickland / etc?
Allanfan20 @ 4/30/2020 8:37 AM
Strickland doesn’t belong in the same boat as the other two. Marbury was the most talented and dynamic. Jackson was the smartest by far.
Allanfan20 @ 4/30/2020 8:40 AM
I’m not saying that as a knock on Strickland BTW. I am just talking about their overall careers. Marbury should be in the hall of fame by now. He never will be though and that’s his fault. He couldn’t humble up when he had Larry Brown and Isiah. Sucks for him but then again, good on him for the work he’s done in China. He made the best out of that situation.
Knickfury11 @ 4/30/2020 8:41 AM
The last time I was in NYC end of 2018, and not many Knicks fans I spoke with had a high opinion on Starbury? I thought he would have god like status being home grown and all? More to do with the relationship between him and coach Brown?
Knickfury11 @ 4/30/2020 8:46 AM
Jackson had great tenures with the Knicks. He was the only non-lottery pick to have won the ROY award since the introduction of the system in 1985 until the 2016-17 season, where Malcolm Brogdon won the award as a second round pick. Fun fact...

The hatred by some and indifference from other Knick fans came when Starbury talked shit about Ward and Childs. A lot of Knick fans didn't forget and held on to that image of Starbury.

NYKBocker @ 4/30/2020 9:40 AM
Dick McGuire, born in the Bronx, was before my time but the way Walt talked about him I guess would put him near the top.
NYKBocker @ 4/30/2020 9:43 AM
Ray Williams, from Mount Vernon, had a pretty good 6 year stretch with the Knicks.

Yes I vaguely remember the incident, not cool. But unquestionably one of the more naturally talented pg’s... shame how reputations can be so easily tarnished... a son of NYC.

Nate "Tiny" Archibald! Dewitt Clinton High!
HOF cred!
McGuire as well. Good pick.
Lenny Wilkens. HOF as Player and as Coach!!! Championship cred.
Marbles had the talent. His stats were trending but he fell fast. Had Olympic record for points but about got kicked off team.
Shout out to Kenny Smith, World B Free, Dean Meminger and Kemba Walker!!
ramtour420 @ 4/30/2020 6:07 PM
You seem to have forgotten Jason Kidd. Not from New York but best PG we have had since I have been a fan (1995) Best record in that stretch since the Ewing years
ramtour420 @ 4/30/2020 6:09 PM
As for NYC's best during my time it's Marbs hands down. Too bad it was so sad. His stay here coinsided with some of the darkest times in Knick history

His time on the knicks was before my time, but I still don’t understand why they traded him. All the articles from then say stuff like “so and so matches up with the bulls better....”. Was Bulls that all consuming on the knicks mind they made trades just to match up better?

He is talking about NYC PGs that played for the Knicks. At least that's how I understood it

Action Jackson was deemed too slow and they wanted a long forward so they got Charles Smith and Doc Rivers. It was a good deal for the Knicks

KnickDanger @ 5/1/2020 10:40 AM
Charlie Ward!

As a knick? Then hands down its McGuire. NYC kid in the HOF and Jersey retired. Dean the Dream played a key off the bench role for the 1973 chip team with some clutch playoff games. THOSE MATTERED!!!!
Mark Jax and Strickland had good years but majority of career away from the Franchise. Marbles would up there but his career as a knick is what counts. He would have been the best of the bunch but what did his teams accomplish?

Swishfm3 @ 5/1/2020 8:52 PM
Marbury by far.

His own arrogance and attitude ruined him. He and K.Garnett could have made Minnesota a powerhouse for years....shoot....he and MDA SHOULD have been a great team in NYK as well (although I believe MDA may have had something to do with that as well).

........as a knick. He earned his pine time. MDA benched him for good reason. No team wanted him and his Celtic stint confirmed his decline.

By the time MDA was here, Marburys’ NBA career was buried. MDA didn’t help out, probably, but Steph was toast. He had the failed experiment with both LB (which he should have been traded after that season) and failed to work with Isiah. MDA just put the nail on the coffin.

Nalod @ 5/2/2020 5:02 PM
Marbles came in to shape as per MDA’s instructions and got sympathy for it. Its his job to come in shape. Marbles statistically played well preseason which led to the controversy.
All that and he was untraceable unless we paid for a dump. Instead we rode it out. Marbles wanted his money. I don’t begrudge him but that was his choice. Contrast to the professional manner by which Melo left. Jrod, thats a MeloCompliment btw. Marbles burned it down everywhere he went.
