Walt Perrin is currently in
his 17th season with the Utah Jazz, and 10th as vice president of player personnel after being promoted from director in September 2007.
In his current role, Perrin’s responsibilities include evaluating players on all levels and assisting Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey with potential player acquisitions.
Before joining the Jazz, Perrin spent nine years with the Detroit Pistons. After spending 1992 as director
of scouting, Perrin moved to the bench as an assistant under Don Chaney. In 1995 he returned to the director of scouting position, where he would stay until 2001.
Prior to his tenure in Detroit, Perrin spent two years with the Minnesota Timberwolves, helping the second- year franchise develop a foundation of players on which to build its future.
Perrin received his degree from Northern Illinois University, where he played on the 1971-72 Huskies basketball squad that won the Midwestern Conference
championship. Perrin and the rest of the squad would be inducted into the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1987.
Perrin began his career as the head coach of NIU’s junior varsity team while finishing his degree there. Upon graduation, he then became the assistant varsity coach and junior varsity coach at his alma mater, Evanston High School, in Evanston, Ill. That led him to Northwestern University, where beginning in 1974, he would spend the next 12 years as an assistant coach. From there he went to Fresno State for two years as an assistant, before getting an assistant coaching job with the Chicago Express
of the World Basketball League. Assuming the head coaching duties with just 10 games left, Perrin guided the Express to the league championship and the finals for the 1988 WBL championship.
Perrin recently relocated to Evanston, Ill. where
he was the starting point guard on the 1968 state championship basketball team at Evanston High School. Perrin has two sons, Christopher and Andrew.
This guy is 70 years old. I doubt he is the successor to Perry unless its an interim thing next year.
It very well could be Utah was looking to promote some younger blood into the role or move forward with fresh thinkers. Not a slight on him at all, its just an odd time for Utah to let him go and Walt Perrin had "feelers" out there.
Odd that Allan Houstan is not making waves into a bigger role or he might be the next GM. Hard to say. Seems like this guy is solid and Craig Robinson is out.
Looks like a positive move. I’m happy with this.
A Jazz fan on their reddit board said he functioned like their head scout. They seemed to be disappointed that he is leaving.
hard to evaluate. We like guys from winning organizations. Perry earned his stripes in Detroit and perhaps his Orlando stint was more a product of not being in charge.
Does success translate? Not always. Gorbert and Mitchell were fortuitous picks but Utah was patient. That Mitchell came into a solid culture with a solid coach is huge!!
Jazz generally seems to be well run for many years.
Leon is making small moves and perhaps this weigh on the coaching decision.
The way I see it no GM, starphuch or not is going to turn this franchise around in one year unless we make some huge trades which presents its own level of risks. That aside Leon must have people he respects and wants them.
If Leon is in this for the long run then its a process. Its not written in stone he rolls with any of these guys forever. Coach, GM, etc might be "Stage 1" and we evolve from there. Thus, Im ok with Perry as GM and see what he can do. No time line to impress me. This is not on Perry, its on Leon. Fully on him to evaluate. I would expect he might be super impressed with a few people having negotiated with them amd has a dream list of who he'd like. He might not get them. Maybe Perry IS doing a good job (sometimes its the guy in charge that is diluting the NET EFFECT: Mills). If so, and he wants long term security perhaps he leaves on his own accord.
Actually its healthy for an organiztion to have guys hired away, its because they are respected!!
Do I have faith? Do I believe Knicks are somehow long term doomed forever? Not if Dolan backs out. No more panic.
Charley Rosen bought up a point we have pondered about Phil getting canned for wanting to move KP. He also said it was crazy to fire the guy if we expected a big change in three years. Thats a whole tired thread we have beaten to death and I agree that phil did not impress enough or build cred at that moment. Hindsight gives us that he was correct to trade him given his injury, his attitude and lack of value we recieved given the timing. But at that moment it seemed wrong and phil did not carry the juice.
Im putting a lot of faith in Leon being a fresh opportunity but also realize this will take time. Its old to keep giving patience but the reality is what it is.

This is a really good podcast. Knick front office personnel never go on podcasts to discuss the inner workings of their draft process.

As to the age thing he is an assistant GM with a focus on personnel it would seem, not running day to day operations. Also, how many times has Jerry West's name been brought up in recent years?

I posted a link to a podcast he did last year. He said he was on the road scouting 250 days that year. He also talked a lot about how the Jazz work out guys in the predraft process. It seems up to now he has been very hands on in his scouting etc.
This guy was on Wasserman's draft podcast the other day. Wasserman made a comment that he has connections to the Knicks. Anyway he likes the hire of another Walt for the Knicks.

Why is his age "concerning"? If he has the capacity and drive having worked long term with a good organization would all that experiences not be valuable?
Donnie and Phil were advanced in the years but we talking about the Assistant GM position, not the president or GM!

Yes age is a concern. Whether it's keeping up with the rigors or sometimes people just lose a step mentally -- not everyone of course; so it is a concern (maybe warranted maybe not)
Both Donovan and Rudy were originally Denver picks. Utah made those trades so kuddos to them for specifically targeting players in those slots and being right on both of them
What't a little puzzling to me is that if Perry was good at anything it seemed to be at drafting -- with the biggest question mark being KK. And this guy seems to be a draft guy
Not sure whether it was Perry (theoretically it should have been) or Mills (dear lord!) who was responsible for "building" the team and strategy for such, but that's where we need the most help. Forming an identity where we can obtain real value in draft and development; rather than the disaster known as the Mills era/error -- worse than Phil
Filmschool had a Jazz broadcaster on who raved about Walt. One of the things he said was that the Jazz workout over a hundred players before each draft because of Walt. He said Walt has relationships with a lot of agents and agents set up workouts with the Jazz so their client can see what a pro workout is like and because of their relationship with Walt. He said that was how the Jazz got Donovan Mitchell in for a workout. His agent wanted him to experience a workout before he worked out with lottery teams. The Jazz had a late first round pick that year and there was no way Mitchell would still be on the board. The broadcaster said that Walt told everyone that witnessed the workout not to say anything about it or they would be fired. He then pulled off a trade to get Mitchell at 12. Plenty of other great stories about Walt. Sounds like Rose got a good one.
