The first person added to Thibs' coaching staff. Was this a front office hire seeing that Payne has a long relationship with WWW or is this a choice by Thibs? Is this a sneaky way for the front office to try to entice Anthony Davis not to pick up his player option and sign with the knicks in the offseason? Does this mean the birthday boy, Kevin knox is here to stay? Its turning out, DSJ is becoming the odd man out in this roster unless Thibs has already planned out a path for DSJ to elevate his game.
Im worried Thibs doesnt have enough of a voice in choosing his assistant coaches, i feel its important to have assistants that are truely on your side and not just share a common goal. Lack of cohesion within the coaching staff might tear the roster in half if factions develop.
I hope I'm wrong on this. Anyway, i think Kenny Payne bodes well for the knicks development staff!

These things are discussed ahead of Thib's hiring. He knew it, the Knicks wanted it. Knicks have 4 first round and 3 high 30's second round picks coming their way; I hope a good bunch of those guys spend a lot of time in the G-League.
I am guessing Thibs already knows who the top assistants are, has already reached out to them and just waiting for them to wrap up Bubble playoffs.

they appear very serious in building a real staff that can develop players. Thibs historically has made players better, but I'm not sure where he is in start from scratch development

Prediction?: "Payne"........
Good solid hire and perhaps this comes from Perrin as well. Sure he is a coach Calipari guy and thus Rose but lets not think Thibs had no say. In fact I can almost assure he negotiated it before walking in!
Payne likey has been in every top 5-10 blue chip prospects living room when recruiting for Kentucky and obviously they have a nice resume of Professionals. One can read so much into a lot of things into it but at the end of the day its a guy with a good touch with young players and obviously goes to building a culture. Payne is 53, mature, has a rep that speaks well. That next year we can start drafting High school kids this guy's experience watching these kids might make scouting them a bit easier. Maybe convince a kid to enter the draft with an assurance is a form of recruiting?
Seems like a good solid hire to add to our ensomble of new coaches and management. Dolan is spending the money at a time others are looking to pair down? Dolan is a lot of things bad but if money is commitment he puts it up.
I'm guessing Payne, Woodson, and Mike Miller are of the Knicks request (discussed with Thibs ahead of his hire) and Thibs will bring in his 2 or 3 guys who have been with him everywhere to round out his bench staff. A number of player development guys will be hired too, but not on the bench.
A few things to note with Payne on staff:
- Should be good for Knox, and should allow him to remain safe on the roster.
- Does this also make Randle safe? His role will be a major question because Rose wants a stretch 4
- Some free agent Kentucky guys Kidd-Gilchrist, Cauley-Stein, and Noel will all be candidates to fill out the roster after the primary targets are signed
- In the draft look for Kentucky guys Quickley, Hagans, or Richards being a very likely pick with the second rounder

I would say that what is good for Knox would also be good for Mitch and Randle too from a dev perspective. I don't put much onto guys staying, not staying based on relationships in this regard.
Lets conspire that Kenny Payne and AD might be tight?
Is Payne a highly sought after assistant coach? Were there alot of teams trying to pry him away of Kentucky? If that is the case, the tides might be starting to turn for the knicks. Successfully recruiting Payne, hopefully is a sign that the knicks can be attractive again in enticing high profile free agents.
Coach Cal had alot of kind words about Kenny Payne understandably so, but it seem like the knick did hire a pretty solid assistant in Payne with his player development as well as player relationships.
Maybe we can see marked improvements on the games of Knox and Randle mainly because Payne would know how to play those two guys correctly, to start. The knicks might be heading at the right direction finally.
I am really hoping that this means AD might me coming to the Knicks. AD coming here would be the payment for the hardships we have endured as a fanbase. Hey. I have to make shit up in my head to keep me entertained.
Yes! I'm very pleased about this, especially after reading last week that last season we had one of the smallest player development units in the league (brilliant considering Fiz pretended that was our main focus)
I don't want to get ahead of myself, but the idea of the knicks landing AD this offseason is making me drool! Hehe. That can instantly catapult our wins to the high 40s or more! If we suddenly trade Randle for CP3, that may turn the rumor mill into overdrive with AD potentially going to the knicks! A line up of Mitch, AD, Knox, RJ and Cp3 with Frank, Dot, Iggy and the 3 rookies this year and 4 more first rounders coming for 2021 and 2022, would bring a huge smile to all the knick fans!

Macri also points out, that if everything we did was geared towards recruiting top FA's, we wouldn't of hired Thibs. So I believe this KP hire is about player development, which is why I'm so pleased about it.

There is just zero chance he is not a Laker next year. 2 seasons from now is another question

You have to slate Carmelo Anthony into that roster also in the rumor mill.

Payne is an average coach but an elite bag man.
He was a former journeyman as a player and thus has international ties that are useful to any team. On every major D1 program, you need a guy who can do the dirty shit so the head coach can have plausible deniability and someone who can access and teach players how to properly cycle and pin. Pinning is an art onto itself and you can fuck that up pretty badly. The control factors to shield players from "random" PEDS testing at the collegiate level is much more complicated than the NBA.
Leon Rose could give a shit less if Payne could teach a guy how to fight through a screen better. He's hiring his version of Ray Donovan with an effective track record.
