Knicks · Knicks need to figure out a way to draft Deni Avdija (page 1)

This kid is legit. He would fit in perfectly at the 4 in between RJ and Mitch. Has a lot of confidence

No way he falls to 8. Maybe we agree to take on Love’s contract from the Cavs in exchange for the 5th pick

Do you think the Cavs would really hand over the 5th pick just to be rid of Love?

Cavs save $90 million if they get rid of Love so maybe

BigDaddyG @ 9/24/2020 10:37 PM
Maybe we can get Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld to take one for the team and get Demi's people to force a trade. I'd throw Woody Allen in there too, but I don't want to risk it. Is kidnapping family members out of the question for you guys I don't see anyway Deni falls to us, but I'm OK with it if it leads to Okoro dropping to 8.

What in your view makes him a better pick than Vassell or Nesmith?

He may be a better taller overall player. The one thing with Nesmith is that I believe he’s on Klay Thompson’s level as a shooter. So that’s really enticing to me. But this player should be good.

He's bigger and more skilled than both players. He's also developing physically and his athleticism has improved. He's not as good a defender as Vassel, but his defense has improved by all accounts. He's not as good a shooter as Nesmith, but his shot is improving and his shot creation is better. And Deni is younger than both players. He is just a better prospect if you look at it objectively. Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, we can cross him of the list. He won't be there when we pick.

Bigger, more athletic. He’s a significantly better Gallinari. And I like Vassell and Nesmith

I’m not advocating a trade up. But if Cleveland gives us the 5th pick in exchange for taking on Love’s whale of a contract, the Clippers pick and one of the Mavericks picks it’s a no brainer

I agree with you on this. His skill level already seems be very nba ready with superstar potential. Definitely worth the gamble. Love would actually be a nice reliable stretch four for us, he is unselfish and can shoot the three.

Deni is big, long, athletic and aggressive. His body isn’t filled out yet but he already looks strong.

Love would start at center, play for a couple minutes and then Robinson would play the rest of the game

I just do not see it. On per 36 comparison, Deni only has an edge over Vassell in assists, and he is only 6 months younger. Vassell is a better shooter, scorer and defender. Rebounds are similar. The height difference of only 1 inch may be easily negated by wingspan. No way I would give up assets to get Deni over Vassell or Nesmith.

You can't compare those stats. Apples to oranges. Different leagues, different roles etc. I agree that Cassell is a better defender and spot shooter. I won't say he's a better a scorer becaus he's not as good inside, mid-range or creating as Deni. Vassell can't create right now and there are questions about his ability as an on-ball defender. He's more Tayshaun Prince than he is Ron Artest defensively.

Also, I think those shooting stats don't take into account Demi's shooting improvements post lockdown. His free throw shooting still needs work, but you can see he's making improvements on the three. He ended the season at around 33-34%.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/patrickmurr...

Up until early January across 28 games in the Israeli league and EuroLeague combined, Avdija had only made more than one three-pointer in a game once, and that was in the second game of the season. Overall he shot 12-46, just 26% on just 1.6 attempts per game.

Since January 9th across 24 games, Avdija has made more than one three in 13 games, including in all 5 games since the Israeli league has returned. In total, across that span, Avdija has made 42-102 threes, a shade over 41%. That’s a very respectable mark on 4.25 attempts per game.

That is a big enough sample size to see the improvement in Avdija’s game. The free throw shooting is still a worry, especially given that is often viewed as a reliable precursor to shooting percentages in the NBA. But for a young player to show this level of improvement across the season while playing in a professional setting against grown men, including in the world’s second-best club competition, is encouraging.

ESOMKnicks @ 9/28/2020 1:41 PM
Must admit, I only posted Deni's Euroleague stats. If have since found his total season's stats including Israeli league games, where he did much better.

Still, not something I would give up assets for.

I am of the opinion that Deni passes the eye test better than almost any prospect in the draft.

Maybe his dad still has the dream. We can open up G-League spot and give him a call up in the final two games of the season. Good thinking outside the box!
