Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman seems to have found the perfect trade partner for the Warriors in his latest mock draft. Wasserman has the Warriors trading back to No. 8 in the draft, propelling the New York Knicks up to the second pick. In this scenario, point guard LaMelo Ball heads to the bright lights of Madison Square Garden, and the Warriors pick Florida State wing Devin Vassell. Golden State also adds the No. 27 overall pick, the Dallas Mavericks' 2021 first-round pick and point guard Frank Ntilikina.

Knicks could make a play for one of the draft's potential stars, and if they can get LaMelo Ball without giving up Mitchell Robinson, RJ Barrett or the Knicks' own 2021 first-round pick

Vassell might be the perfect fit for Steve Kerr's team. He's a 6-foot-6 small forward with a 6-foot-10 wingspan who can be both a defensive demon and sharpshooter from deep. Vassell averaged 12.7 points per game as a sophomore and shot 41.7 percent from 3-point range over his two years at Florida State. He has a high release point on his shot, using his long arms to his advantage.

NBA teams will love Vassell's instant impact on defense first and foremost. He's tenacious on that side of the ball, averaging 1.4 steals and 1.0 blocks per game his final college season. He had a 93.6 defensive rating as a sophomore.

Ntilikina also fills a hole for the Warriors as well. Sure, he hasn't lived up to his status as the No. 8 pick in the 2017 draft, but he certainly has a place in the NBA. He's only 22 years old, and averaged career highs in points (6.3) and steals (0.9) while averaging just 20.8 minutes per game. The former first-rounder also had the best shooting year of his young career, making 32.1 percent of his 3s, and had a 45.9 effective field goal percentage.

The Warriors need a backup point guard behind Steph Curry and Ntilikina could be the long, defensive-minded option that perfectly fits Kerr's system. The young guard is 6-foot-4 but has a ridiculous 7-foot-1 wingspan. He also had his best defensive plus-minus (0.4) of his three-year NBA career this past season.

A change of scenery and learning under Kerr and Ron Adams could be perfect for Ntilikina.

Thoughts? Would you do it? Would you rather take Anthony Edwards if he was there? James Wiseman? Do you think Ball will break out?

This would be a bad trade.

Next years draft is considered by many to be a generational draft.
Everyone wants more picks next year and giving any pick next year would be a mistake.

Frank looks like he has turned a corner and am eager to see what he has on the court before shipping him out. His defense is rock solid and if he has found his jumper he would jump to next level.

I would do this trade for DSJR, pick 8, clippers pick, 2nd rounder this year, cash considerations and Dotson.

There is. Reason the warriors want Frank this year, they have very good mgmt and their interest alone should give us pause.

Without a tournament this year there are good chances rookie of the year next year may not even be a lottery pick...

I think next years draft is so strong I would trade that clippers pick and 2 second round picks to a struggling team like the pistons for their 1st rd pick next year... and once again would even thrown in Dotson to sweeten the deal.

Furthermore these lottery projections this year will be Shaken up once the combine comes around and teams are able to have private workouts with potential targets. Again the lack of a touenament this year has upended what is traditionally the showcase of talent every year... this leaves a lot of room for guys who could have exploded in the tournament to drop feo where they would have been drafted otherwise.

Now more than ever, it is important to be patient.
We must maximize our potential in these two drafts without giving away too many assets... these next two drafts will have more diamonds in the late lottery and later part of draft than ever before.. again due to the lack of showcasing of talent in the NCAA tournament.

What an idiot.
Jimbo5 @ 9/26/2020 9:45 AM
The package is a bit too much for me. I would rather swap DSJ for frank, #8 and the clips pick but exclude the mavs pick. I think if the FO really likes Ball they might have no choice but to offer a boat load. Rumors have it that the suns are thinking of moving up to #2 by giving up #10 and Kelly Oubre Jr. not sure my revised offer can beat that, its not even close.

But i would rather stay at the 8th draft Okoro or Vassell, trade up the clips pick for a pick in the teens and get patrick Williams while keeping frank and DSJ.

Warriors don’t have the matching salary to take on Oubre without trading Wiggins. Warriors should just draft Wiseman and not look back unless Hornets make the move up for him.

Lamelo has sting potential and could be a stud. But the assets needed to move up, along with the risk that he is just a good player and not an elite one is to high.

Vassell is intriguing because he fits the identity that together with some of the pieces already here. Like trolling out a Frank, RJ, Vassell, Mitch lineup could be elite defensively given the length and chops. There is also Tyler Terry who I’m not sure if the Knicks are looking at but would rather try him out without giving up the amount of assets needed to land a Ball.

I have zero issue with the 2nd Mavs pick becaue its protected being traded but no chance am I giving up unprotected picks in next years draft

Yeah, the price is too steep, especially in this year's draft. The top players have too much boom or bust potential.

Excuse me for a moment, I just threw up in my mouth a little.

No WAY do you do a deal like this. That's four assets for one when we need to be in (a) the asset-gathering-game, so we can develop AND have a warchest from which to make a (real) significant move; and (b) the quantity-wins game, as we don't know whether Frank is ready to pop, don't know what the #8, #27, and next year's Dal first in a loaded draft will become, and have no good indication that LaMelo is a franchise caliber player who will elevate his game in the NBA or make others better.

Wasserman is using a trade value chart. Typically teams do not move up to the 1st/2nd overall picks for the volume reasons guys here are citing.

It is too much "risk" considering the Knicks situation. But technically it is not too much "slot value" considering the pick.

This is where "value for slot" drastically changes for the NBA compared to the NFL/MLB/NHL. The nominal test case in the modern era is the Chris Paul/Blake Griffin/DeAndre Jordan Clippers team. That teams functionally took close to a decade worth of assets to build it's core. The other complication is the changes in rookie slotting in the last five years. LaMelo Ball instantly becomes a middle class contract.

A trade value chart is going to factor in overall pan out rate given draft slot.

TheGame @ 9/26/2020 3:31 PM
No mf way do we do that trade. Our pick and two other first round picks plus Frank for Ball. I like Ball but I don’t like him that much. I could see our pick, Frank and maybe pick 27, but even that would be a lot. Now if they want our pick, pick 27, and DSJr or Knox, then I would do that deal.
KnickDanger @ 9/26/2020 4:40 PM
Our history is selling low and buying high. Stop it.

With the uncertainty of the Mavs health and the fact that people are saying next years draft is awesome, the Mavs pick should be considered untradable at this point unless you are getting something awesome in return. Pairing it with Frank and yet another pick for someone as questionable as Ball is an Isiah move.

Chandler @ 9/28/2020 11:04 AM

putting aside trade value slot, I'd like to think Thibs is coming in and wanting to instill some identity -- which i suspect will be hard nosed competitive -- not run off to NZ-type persona to avoid the best competition, and game the system. He now has 2 firsts and a high second to play with. IIRC he got Noah at 9 and Butler at 30 so he knows firsthand you can get value in our slots if you know what you're looking for. I suspect/hope he's looking for truly smart, tough ultra competitive types -- not flashy

Honest question: has anyone here see LaMelo play and can they say whether he's better than Lonzo who I wouldn't want either (last year he IMPROVED his FT% to 56; two prior were <50!! -- and people here talk about his improved shooting)

fishmike @ 9/29/2020 5:18 PM
Tell me again why he's better than Lonzo?

fishmike wrote:Tell me again why he's better than Lonzo?

More fluid athlete, better mid-range game. Outside of that, they're pretty similar. Keep in mind, while Lonzo was considered a bust early on, he's one of the most sought after trade targets now. It'll take LaMelo time to develop.

Philc1 @ 9/30/2020 4:15 PM
Just stay at 8. It’s a fairly deep draft

Only draft day trade I support is trading for Cleveland’s 5 pick
