Knicks · We resigned Elfred Payton (page 1)

1 year 5 million according to Woj. We are headed to the finals!
TLover @ 11/21/2020 6:35 PM
Better than trading for Westbrook or Wall.. 1 year 5 mill - smart move

Not saying much but he was our best point guard. Was hoping they ran with Frank and Smith so they would not be looking over their shoulders. But makes sense. He had a good year. He is also Randle's favorite guard. Feel if they traded Randle, Payton would not have been resigned. Could this be just a move to add another piece as part of a bigger trade?

GustavBahler @ 11/21/2020 6:43 PM
Payton will probably start. Agree its a more palatable option, to a PG with a killer contract.
Allanfan20 @ 11/21/2020 6:54 PM
I’ll be pretty annoyed if I see him and Randle are freezing guys out again.

I doubt they're going to get away with freezing out RJ. Thibs, and he isnt a rookie anymore. Im sure Barrett will let them know.

I'll be pretty annoyed if Randle is here past the trade deadline. They made it known that they wanted his replacement, made several moves to try and draft his replacement and are already marketing him as part of the future. If you thought Randle was a headcase on the court before, prepare for it to get a lot worse.

Chandler @ 11/21/2020 7:07 PM
biggest negative is his penchant to play keep-away-from-RJ

price is good

fingers crossed on Frank and DSJ -- each of whom seem to be on their last stand -- now or never

We needed another veteran PG on the roster. But it does make you wonder about where Frank and DSJr stand, and their future with the team. Since Payton started ahead of both of them.

Same old same old. The RJ stuff was ridiculous.

Why not just Rondo $12MM on a one year deal. Would have been fun watching him get Mitch and Obi the ball.

Rondo deal was done before we blinked. Honestly, the Atlanta situation is a heck of a lot more appealing. Don't think he was an option.

Gross.

I want the knicks to do 1 thing. Trade Randle for Rozier. It gets Randle off the team and gets Payton out of the starting lineup. Win win.

Allanfan20 @ 11/21/2020 11:00 PM
People here are assuming Elf is the starter. That would be a disaster for the entire season. That means Frank and DSJ are playing SO BAD that we have no choice but to start Elf. Frank and DSJ have to be the priority here. Elf needs to be plan C.... and he’s a fine Plan C when people get hurt but he can’t be declared a major player from the start.
unstopaball12 @ 11/22/2020 5:29 AM
Does this mean the trade for rozier is dead for Randle? We arent sold with DSJ or Frank?

I don't like the fit of Payton with RJ and going to the season with the same 3 point gusrds.

ESOMKnicks @ 11/22/2020 7:04 AM
Dumb move, unless Frank or DSJr are definitely getting moved. Having 3 PGs who cannot hit the side of a barn on the same team did not work last year, and will not work this year either.
franco12 @ 11/22/2020 7:46 AM
I do hope there is some other move lined up or in motion to upgrade the PG position. Payton is a stop gap PG for a bottom tier team. He had flashes, but nothing sustained and his warts as big as anything decent he brought to the game.

Any chance we could trade for Mudiay? That was a mistake letting him go.

In fact, any chance of trading for Langston Galloway?

Ron Baker free still?

In fact - why didn’t we sign Trey Burke? I think he would have been an easy upgrade.

Knicksfan @ 11/22/2020 10:31 AM
At best, this gives Thibs time to see what he has in all his possible point guards while not risking having none work out.

At worst, Payton starts all year and we get a top pick.

In a year where we are going deeper into the rebuilding with way more assets, way more flexibility and way more chances to deliver franchise-changing talent (RJ, Obi and Mitch, for starters, along with two 1st round picks in next year’s loaded draft), our moves so far are really a breath of fresh air.

Chandler @ 11/22/2020 10:34 AM

DSK or Frank are goners. i can only hope Randle is too -- thus breaking up team "keep-away from RJ"

they don't need another PG but DSJ (from the area) and Randle for one of CHarlotte's PGs -- probably rozier??? I can give long odds that Rozier is having a nutty right now with LaMelo on the roster.

Where does all that leave devonte Graham tho?

Can't be mad at the contract but its frustrating that it was Payton that received it. We watched this show last year and it was ugly. The spacing when Payton, Rj and Randle are on the floor is nonexistent. Payton also tends to pound the air out of the rock. Im sure someone like Quin Cook would have taken a similar deal. a guy who could provide a little more spacing.
rpknicks @ 11/22/2020 11:45 AM
it also means that this FO decided even before the draft and free agency that the current PG options needed more time to evaluate. That includes DSJ, Frank, RJ, and Jared harper.

After taking Obi, they did not trade up into the teens for a guy like kira.

They took quickley who while he can play PG, is more of a combo over guys like flynn, terry.

Then they traded their 2nd rounder instead of kicking the tires on cassius winston types.

Myles powell is a PG/SG candidate, but they could not have had a deal prior to the draft as he had 32 teams passed over him.

And for all the back room dealing our FO is rumored to have, they did not have a deal with ANY PG ready to go at the start of free agency and only re-settled on payton when the market conditions signaled a retreat.

I'm ok with this approach as long as pride does not get in the way of these evaluations, as it may have with giving DSJ one more shot, given the KP trade connections.

The knicks will enter '21 with a roster that has been fully vetted by arguably the best team of talent evaluators we've ever had, a ton of money and flexibility, and 2 first rounders, one likely in the high lottery, in what looks to be a deep draft.

What we won't necessarily have is a destination that free agents choose over others. We have to re-establish a culture and an identity that draws the right people in. So while we won't win a ton of games we have to show improvement on the court, competence in the front office , and more professionalism from ownership.
