Knicks · I like the approach. (page 1)

The Knicks are building through the draft and waiting on FAs until the right guy comes along or the team is ready and one piece away.

This was the quietest I've seen the Knicks in FA in a while. They signed one year deals. No commitment. Got a great veteran scorer who's not a liability on defense. Got a backup defensive C with some athleticism. And brought back their defensive minded PG to join a clusterf**k at the position. And these players are still young. If they produce and settle into roles the Knicks can bring them back.

This will be a very young team competing hard under a demanding coach who knows how to build high character players. I think they will run a lot, I think this will be a much better shooting team and a team that can score in the post as well. Defensively the Knicks will still struggle. I'm sure they'll get steamrolled by powerhouse teams at times because of their youth and/or inconsistency. The onus will be on Thibs to teach a lot of these young players NBA level defense and instill a tough defensive-minded concept in the team. But thats partly why they brought him here.

So the Knicks are doin it right. Patience. They still won't be very good next year. Won't be competing for a playoff spot or anything like that. But because of their patient approach they will once again have the luxury of cap space the next two years to resign Mitch and go after a big FA. They also have 3 first rounders and 3 second rounders in the next 2 years. I think by 2023 you should see a fully assembled young team, if all goes as planned.

I’m fine with it too. I’m just really hoping we don’t go into the season with Payton and Randle paired as starters again. I am okay with being a bad team but I want this to be a modern team that compliments the young talent on the team. Randle needs to be moved, especially with Toppin here.

I think both are coming off the bench. Toppin is the main reason to watch this team this season he has to start at PF

I’m ok with Payton (although I don’t like it) only if Randle is traded. We can’t go into the year with Payton and Randle leading the way. Payton by himself can focus on setting up RJ, Toppin and Mitch and play tough D. That’s fine. Hopefully the lack of shooting can be offset by big shooting years from Bullock, Burks and Quickley. The CAA/Kentucky thing makes me nervous about Randle staying. Randle staying wasn’t a bad thing until they drafted Obi. He has to be the starter and primary focus on offense alongside RJ for there to be progress this year.

Again I think Payton is just a depth move which is fine. I also think Randle can be a contributor off the bench.

If the Knicks resign or extend Randle now that I would find very very troubling.

I’m fine with it, we’re doomed until we land a star in the draft. This is the best year to tank. The main downer for me is our lack of a decent PG. Also the worrying thing is after the 2021 draft, we only have one extra first rounder coming to us (that is likely to be late 1st round). We have to hit it in the 2021 draft.

The more I think about it, Noel was a sneaky good signing along with Burks. However, resigning Payton is a head scratcher unless there's a blockbuster looming involving a Randle/DSJ package for a primetime PG, but I don't see it.
