Yeah, but this team can't afford to think purely in terms of fit. Wouldn't Vassel, who hasn't really developed as an off the dribble threat yet, suffer from the same PG issues? Obi has, or at least is perceived to have, higher upside. The Spurs have more in place for Vassel to develop at a normal pace. Obi's impact on the other hand should be more immediate.

They are both going to be great players.

Agree. That's why I'm not too worried about it. I was more worried that we passed on on Deni, but I've calmed down. Pre-season is fun, but the season is long and rookies have a lot ups and downs.

Obi has himself looked good in 2 out of 3 preseason games

Hopefully Thibs realizes Payton (and really DSJ) have no business in an nba rotation and Julius Randle only gets 15-20 minutes a night coming off the bench. Start Obi and let him develop. Quickly should also be starting I think we got a steal with him

BRIGGS @ 12/18/2020 9:43 AM
Right now he looks all of a top 5 pick
I know some people were on him— good choice
smackeddog @ 12/18/2020 12:18 PM
there have been three- yes THREE preseason games, can we suspend judgements for a while, Jesus!

A lot of us were screaming for Vassell the entire offseason. I still think we made out like bandits with Obi and IQ

The question is are the Knicks better with Vassell and Wood or Quickley and Toppin. The Knicks clearly would be better NOW-a lot better with Vessel and Wood and unless Toppin turns out to be better than Wood a tall order given how Woods is playing they would be better a lot better with this duo in the future.

You do have a point. But based on the way Vassell has looked thus far this could turn out to be a bad decision by the Knicks.

Devin Vassell wins ‘Rookie of the Year’

Devin Vassell has been unanimously voted ‘Rookie of the Year’ following only three preseason games. The unprecedented move by the nba was hailed by owners, players and fans alike. “Usually we wait until after rookies have played summer league, a full preseason and an entire regular season, in order to have a decent body of work to evaluate them, but after 3 preseason games, we knew everything we needed to know- so why wait?”, Said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

Team owners are now in discussions to award the Rookie of the Year after 3 preseason games every season, in order to appease New York Knick fans who need to make themselves despair at any opportunity. “Before, Knicks fans would wait until at least the 5th preseason game before they’d start having a meltdown, but now they’ve honed the process down to just 3 games, following years of misery” said former Knicks great, Andrea Bargnani, “When I played for them, they didn’t realize I was a disaster until midway into the regular season- they kept telling themselves that I was turning the corner, or that Phil Jackson would work his magic. Unfortunately that required such levels of self-delusion that something inside them broke”.

Vassell told the media he was delighted with the award, “I didn’t expect to win it so soon, but I think the fact the Knicks passed on me certainly helped me look much better in the eyes of Knicks fans”

You need to play at least 20 regular season games for that.

This. Lets wait until the first game of the regulat season.

Fact is, pre season does show a bit of insight into these players real potential. Especially since we had no extended opportunity to see them in a full NCAA season. But to your point, we also have to take into consideration that they are playing against mostly second level rotation guys.

awe1028 @ 12/18/2020 4:46 PM
The point about it being early has already been acknowledged. But I am sure a lot of people were saying the same thing when "Spida" started out playing well. The point is not to venerate Vassell as a Hall of Famer but simply to highlight that he is playing very well and acknowledge if his play is for real this could be a mistake by the Knicks akin to passing on Spida. Of course if Obi develops into a star/superstar or Vassell falls off dramitcally this would render this conversation moot.

You need to play at least 20 regular season games for that.

You also are required to publicly state that MSG is the Mecca of basketball at least 5 times during the draft process. I’m not sure if Devin met those criteria.

awe1028 @ 12/19/2020 6:40 PM
Maybe I should have titled the thread Devin Vassell and Immanuel Quickley. Imagine Quickley and Vassell in the backcourt with Christian Wood. The defense would take a little hit with Quickley instead of Frank but not too much since Quickley is a good defender in his own right. But with Vessell and Quickley the 3pt shooting would be twice as good and with Wood showing off his jumper 3 times as good. the current youngins are playing pretty well no doubt but a starting five of IQ, Vass, RJB, Wood and Mitch wow.

Better fit with the players already on the roster.
Obi is another player that is only effective with the ball in his hands. I really didn't want another player like that on the roster. I don't think his game is conducive to winning in the NBA today. Perimeter defense and perimeter offense. He provides no defense and not enough perimeter offense. I would prefer to roll 3 Wings out there with a PG and a center. Someone like Knox makes more sense for todays game at PF

Here is Vassell in the Spurs's third preseason game second again Houston. If his play so far is for real Knicks really missed the boat'

Yeah and if IQ's play so far is for real, then the entire league missed the boat
