Guy has been outstanding on d the last two games. When we talk about earned time— he earned the starters position w great play. Noel back up

My guess is Mitch is behind in the learning curve. Probably really didn't have a structured offseason where he was learning usable skills for the upcoming season. He now has a professional coaching staff around him and he'd better fucking put them to use and mature some.

Think the only thing keeping him from the starting line up is the concern of early foul trouble. Kid will be different level if he gets a consistent 15 footer.

I feel like starting lineup is such a low bar placement in terms of where Mitch should be. This is his 3rd season and we shouldn't still be talking about foul troubles.

And enough with the wild ass dribbling and 3point shot making off-season videos against high school YMCA kids. Get that 10-15 footer and jump hook down. Learn when to double, learn when to rotate, get better at organizing the defense in transition.

EwingsGlass @ 12/19/2020 1:24 PM
In the last two preseason games, Robinson looked like he was laying off the plays that got him fouls. Granted he had 5 fouls in the 3rd game before he developed that caution. But small things like not leaving his feet at the first pump.

All of these guys are making incremental growth.

I really agree with this. Just be a high IQ version of THIS Mitch Robinson and he's approaching the Tyson Chandler zone which be amazing

First thing I thought of when I saw that video of him shooting 3s in the off-season.

Who the heck is working with him in the offseason? He should be picking up 3-5 garbage baskets off his offensive rebounds each game. He has no hook shot or <5ft foot bank shot game.

Frustrating.

Yeah, you can tell Mitch just doesn't have the structure around him. Dropping out of college, the dropping of agents.

Imagine 1 year (or more ) of Mitch at Kentucky or some other high level school. Would have been a top 10 pick for sure. Cost him MILLIONS of $$$ and may still cost him more with his next contract if he doesn't get serious

He's a immature guy, and plays like it to, he definitely needs a MENTOR

If he can focus on what he does best, which is defense, finishing around the rim, and help D, he will have a long career.

Lol. Hated that. I guess guys pushing that do not know about a thing called editing. Think the defensive lapses will be quickly addressed by Thibs and will spell bench time. He was asked what he worked on in the off season and Mitch said his ability to space the floor. I was really hoping he would say my mid range wide open jumper. Hoping he has a good year. Does scare me with that Charles Smith type IQ though.

I had hopes he would develop into a Gobert type of defensive difference maker. However, at this point I think it's more likely he is a better version of Noel
ramtour420 @ 12/20/2020 3:50 AM
Where is that Oladjuwon mini camp when you need it. Oh yeah, I forgot, the Rockets now prohibited him from training athletes from other teams. Maybe get Kurt Thomas to just get that baseline jumper down pat. Somethin
KnickDanger @ 12/20/2020 10:50 AM
Coach on Mitch yesterday:

“He was terrific. The same thing can be said for him about the way he’s been practicing and working and getting there early and staying late, practicing well, concentrating,” Thibodeau said after the game. “I thought he played as hard as he could. He was on the floor, he was everywhere. He was on the rim, knocking shots away, rebounding the ball, sprinting into screens, putting pressure on the rim. Did a ton of good things. We’ll take a look at the film and keep pushing him to get better.”

Sounds pretty good to me.

Lost in the Shuffle?
No, he is progressing. Two weeks of Thibs and label need not be applied.
There is a rare instance where a player comes from one season to another a different player/person.
Mitch is getting good coaching and Payne is the kind of guy with a track record.
Its not going to be an even smooth road.

The reason foul troubles is still an issue in year 3 is that previous coaches did not allow Rob to play when he got into foul trouble. Leaving him would allow him to adjust on the fly and learn/develop the discipline to play with the fouls and eventually eliminate the problem
Evidence of this: Preason against Cleveland he got 5 quick fouls but Thibs kept him in the game and he ended up playing 32 mins.
As Thibs continue to show confidence in him the foul issues should become less and less of a problem.

There is something to letting a player learn how to play with fouls. This is the step before it though: stop committing the stupid fouls altogether

You don't play Randle more when he is committing a shit-ton of spinovers, you tell him to cut the shit or hit sits. And then when he stops the multiple spinovers, you play him more

would that be bad? I want every player to be Anthony Davis also but its not realistic. A "better" version of Noel could be pretty good. I see a version of Clint Capella, maybe better maybe not. If he's better he will be the high end rebounder/rim protector that Capella is (already a better rim protector) but also be able to smother guards on the perimeter on switches.

I know that spells role player but when you see what he does on defense he's a critical piece

The "stupid fouls" is a function of his lack of basketball experience. Mitch did not attend college - remember he left Western Kentucky after what maybe 2 weeks when the university had some issue with his godfather Shammond Williams being an assistant coach. Then he made some vague reference that he would prepare for the draft whatever that means. Fast forward to his career in NY where the knuckle head coaches did nothing to help him improve

Compare with what Thibs has accomplished. In just one preseason under Thibs Mitch already showing signs of improvement in that area I mentioned the first preseason game against Cleveland where he displayed the discipline to stay in the game after picking up the quick five fouls. Then the very next game he plays 27 minutes and did not commit a single foul. Now that's progress. What a difference a competent coach makes.

Oh and you can't compare Mitch to Randle. Randle has been in the NBA for six years and attended Kentucky one of the two or three best college programs in the country He should not be making such silly plays. This is why there is very little patience for Randle.

Agree completely. Even if Mitch gets into foul trouble the knicks still have a similar player coming off the bench

It comes down to cost. How much do you pay to keep a player as impactful as Capella?

technomaster @ 12/20/2020 6:05 PM
Robinson needs to have his eyes on the prize: the ginormous 5yr/205m contract Gobert got. A true center. He got the contract by playing like a center. Playing defense. Rebounding. Playing the pick and roll. Finishing.

Gobert is no AD or Giannis - he doesn't handle the ball like a guard and shoot from deep. Robinson doesn't need to do that stuff to be successful.

Mitchell Robinson needs to follow the advice of very own assistant coach Johnnie Bryant (Utah's former player dev coach/assistant coach who was part of the Jazz organization for Gobert's entire career) and he'll be a very rich man.
