Knicks · SHOULD WE CHANGE THE 3 POINT RULES? Is it killing basketball skills HOW WOULD YOU CHANGE THE GAME (page 1)

Papabear @ 1/15/2021 3:04 PM
Papabear Says

It seems all of the highlights of the game shows a 3 pointer or a dunk. You really can't play defense like Oakley or Starks, or Russel, or like that Detroit team. What if the game was played with on part of the game it counted 3 points and other parts of the game it would be only 2 points and give more credit to defense. Keep the flagrent fouls in because I don't want to see anyone get hurt. HOW WOULD YOU CHANGE THE GAME.

fitzfarm @ 1/15/2021 3:20 PM
Bring back hand checking ...so teams can d up and stop the 3 ...there’s a reason Reggie, starks, bird, Hubert Davis. Didn’t light it up every night, if they played in today’s nba they’d be right up there with curry .... imagine not being able to touch bird at the 3 point line !!! Curry would still be chasing that record .

NBA is super soft now it’s not even the same game. It’s just a race to dunk or who gets the open 3 . No real strategy just slam it down or jack um up .... starting to get boring.

Nalod @ 1/15/2021 3:49 PM

PGs should get 4 points every time they miss a 3pt shot.

It has been boring for a long time. Need to re-empower the D. Bring average points back down to earth and make it MORE competitive.

ramtour420 @ 1/15/2021 5:24 PM
They did allow zone D. Probably to encourage more 3's. Ar this point they are just as likely to implement a 4 point shot. A couple of feet behind the 3 point line.
JesseDark @ 1/15/2021 5:33 PM
I would implement half fouls. If you foul someone in the act of shooting they need to make both free throws in order for you to get a full foul. If they miss 1 free throw you only get a half foul. If they miss both, tough.
This would but more emphasis on improved free throw shooting and increase the importance of free throws.
franco12 @ 1/15/2021 6:10 PM
this is a great question. I'd make the court bigger - longer, wider - athletes today compared to 1946 or 1976 are bigger and faster.

I'd move the 3pt line in, and add a 4pt line. I'd also make baskets shot in the lane worth 3 points- so there would be an interest in spreading the floor, and getting to the basket - because a layup at 95% @ 3pts trumps any other shot out there.

This is actually a really good idea -- raise the hoop a little too. Of course it won't happen. And today's fan loves their super friends hoisting up threes. Like all major sports it's first about money and marketing shows more offense means more money. I don't have to like it.

1) No more draft lottery percentages. Anyone can win. No tanking.
2) Lowest win percentage team in any 5 year period is demoted to GLeague and replaced by the highest performing GLeague team.
3) Hard salary cap for veterans. Rookie contracts don’t count against the cap. No trading picks.
4) Vet minimum on a yearly basis is fixed. Vets that can’t get signed can play in the G League. No more taking a low salary to chase chips.
5) Salaries are tax neutral. Players Association will adjust total salaries at the League level to ensure that player salary (ignoring outside income) is equal by state.
6) Each game has a bonus pool where the winning team’s players get an extra bonus.
7) Team Captain title requires 10 years with the same team. Results in bonus money.
8) No more free throws. Instead, it’s a one on one attempt that is defended by the fouling party who must check the ball from the paint to the offense at the 3. A 2 pt foul could be a 3 point play.
9) No more team owners. Teams are all owned by the player’s association, a publicly traded company.
10) Each Team can have 1 max contract.

1. They are moving to this as they are. Better idea would be to incentivize winning. Winning Frachises should also be compensated besides the players. Good owners should be rewarded.
2. Can’t kill the value of a franchise by demoting it to a lessor league. But you can incentivize winning more.
3. Interesting ideas!......Should have like a “Franchise Tag” like they do in Football.
4. Too restrictive. Players should go where they want to work/live.
5. This is a good idea.
6. Also good. Along the lines of “incentivizing winning”.
7, Not sure 10 years, but its a good idea. Do players still care about being capt??
8. Nope.
9. SO all the owners sell out at fair market value? Who in reality puts up the money? Players association borrow and how is it paid back? Who obsorbs losses? Its not a players union if they own it. The more you think about this you might find it not rooted in any reality.
10. Along the lines of a franchise player tag. I think the intent is good but you have to consider the collusion aspect of price fixing. If you have 37 great players you can’t pay 7 of them? Why again? So the new collective ownership group is not holding down salaries to increase profit? New faces with same old problem.

Nalod ideas: Don’t raise the rim. Can’t mess with the game like that. But you could lower the floor! (
4 pt line might be good or it might produce more blowouts for every good comeback display.
Maybe no 3 pt line the last 2 minutes of a game?

Back in the early 60’s the games had I think avg 140 shots per game avg. we at 125 which is up from previous years. but there is a point of smash mouth physical games that teams could not buy a bucket and the leaugue was losing viewers. I don’t miss Jon Koncak, Rick Mahorn, or Chris Dudley!!!!

Here's one that should get some discussion. Require every team to carry two females, and play one of them at least 15mins/night. This move would change the game more than any other I can think of, and would be an opportunity for the NBA to have its very own Jackie Robinson moment.

And WNBA teams should carry 2 man and play them 15 min a night...

I think the WNBA would have become a huge commercial success if only they had adopted Australian-style uniforms.

Push back the three point line and take away corner threes. Also bring back hand checking.

7. The logic behind the Captain was “my team” but added some more money. 10 years might be too long (though stars are more consistently getting to 40). I added bonus money to further incentivize it. I only really want to see all stars playing together at the all star game. Ewing’s team playing Jordan’s team... not Ewing and Jordan playing some rookies...

9. With a publicly traded-back? I think the issue right now is that sports franchises are treated as a luxury good. Honestly, it might not be easy to “buy” back the league from the Owners, but I don’t like the implications of teams trading players cause they can’t afford to pay them.

2. This was more in line with a single owner model with a sense of competitiveness in GLeague. The idea of a soft refresh where a team mired in bad contracts and bad decisions could take a breather and clean itself up without stinking up the competitive balance of the league.

I like the idea in principle but the financial ramifications for an NBA team to drop to Gleague are huge. What to do with the TV money? Also how do you pay NBA salaries to a team below? THe gate will crush and the team lose fans. What Gleague team moves up? SInce they are owned largely by the same owners its really not doable. Westchester knicks come up, Our Knicks move down? Since Gleague team rosters change A LOT its not really a team. Maybe we should incentivize winning teams and consistency while still helping the weaker teams pull up. These huge salaries for like Westbrook and CP3 are problematic. If with a team for 10 years maybe half of the cap applies against salary and should still be used if traded. Might be able to keep teams together longer?
I’d like to see perhaps more incentives in contracts and less guarantees. ITs being used a bit more but it creates havoc on the cap for teams. If a player can’t stay healthy it kills a franchise.

Certainly not easy to formalize a two tier league structure in a single post, but one implication of a single owner would be that pairings like the NY Knicks/Weschester Knicks would not remain affiliated, but that there are 20 other teams vying to take your place that include both young players and displaced vets trying to get back into the league. Over time, some of the better teams in the G League may be able to achieve parity with mismanaged NBA level squads. And when given more money and access to the draft, maybe they do better.

One of the things I love (and hate) about basketball is the amount of talent that is really out there that just needs opportunity. The fact that a young Giannis Antekoumpo can come from a Greek league and dominate the NBA is a simple example of opportunity.

But, I really hate tanking. But I think I hate players crying til they can play with their friends more.

Nalod @ 1/17/2021 1:50 PM
Perhaps as the Gleague morphs to more of a minor league with development and appropriate pay and the ability for those players to be traded to better opportunities so they can get the proper opportunity and teams are motivated to developed (Like baseball does even for trade fodder) it will be more interesting.
The punitive nature of a team being knocked to a lower league is a good idea. Not sure how that is handled in detail via soccer in Europe. NBA has 30 TV shares nationally and Regional cable deals.
