Basketball-Reference breaks down players' stats in detail - that specify where players take shots from (distance) and their percentage from each distance. I think it's pretty interesting to look at.

Somethings that stand out to me:

-- While our high-use players take a low percentage of threes I was surprised at the percentage of shots our bench took from beyond the three-point line.
-- I knew Mitch only worked inside - but not a single shot outside of 10 feet.
-- RJB - hits a high percentage of layups and dunks and is worse than I thought beyond 3 ft.
-- Frank - hasn't taken a single shot within 3ft? (can that be correct?)
-- The midrange jumper is not an optimal shot in today's NBA - but more so for the knicks as Randle and Payton seem to be the only knicks who can make midrange jumpers. (Toppin and Rivers hardly any shots from 16-3p)

Curious if anyone else has observations on these stats.

The easy conclusion is our starters cannot shoot.
If Burk and Quick will start it will be much better balance.
But then bench will be terrible at shooting...
So it is no way out with group.
OldFan @ 2/4/2021 12:13 PM
Yes, I agree but I see some hope. If we can get more shots for Burk, Quick, Rivers - maybe even Knox it would help. RJ is shooting 3s even worse than last year and bullock is shooting below his career average - if they can back to previous levels it would help.

If Bullock and RJ don't improve they are going to have to get another shooter into the starting lineup.

NYKBocker @ 2/4/2021 12:18 PM
This just shows that Payton should be benched. No ifs and or buts.

ITs like they told Mitch they’d cut off his mothers pinkie if he takes a shot. He don’t even look at rim and gets wide open looks.

The reason why Mitch never shoots is because of his programming. He instinctively does things on the court that won't put him in position to shoot the ball. Think about how many Picks he has set in the NBA. How many times have you seen him Pick and Pop instead of a Pick and hard roll to the basket? If he never puts himself in positions where a shot is an option he will never get to shoot.

Honestly, I don't think he's being maximized now. I couldn't using 20 hands the amount of missed cuts and botched alleys Mitch has had

Mitch is really sloppy. He's also looking like his legs are tired and he's a bit out of shape. That being said the strides have been great and Mitch has had a good impact this year despite the sloppy play. Its like he's never been shown how to set a screen. He sticks elbows, knees and his ass out there like he's got no clue.

This is part of what makes playing better BB and vets so important. We can actually see how bad Mitch is and how much work he still needs. BTW I am high on Mitch for sure still

Thanks for grabbing this. I had planned to look at these stats after whining last night about Randle's midrange jumper. Randle's 3-10 being worse than his 16-3 is interesting. 48% from 16-3 is better than I expected if still not a high eFG shot (unlikely to get fouled from there).

Bullock is not doing well offensively. SF appears to be the #1 need for the Knicks.

Barrett/Payton are basically taking the same shots. Barrett is doing it slightly better. IQ really would spread the floor a bit more by taking different shots and higher efficiency.

Nice breakdown. Man RJ is killing me from outside of 3 ft. His finishing has been crazy tho.

He is good at what he knows how to do but has a load to learn.

I actually love the fact that he doesn’t really shoot from 10ft to the 3pt line. That floater scares me, but he seems to have crazy accuracy with it. It just seems he avoids what would otherwise be contact an his 95% at the ft line for a quick release floater. I mean, take the easy buckets, but as he adds a couple pounds I wouldn’t mind him driving further and drawing contact. Can’t fault the kid though, it’s working for him.

I am wholly opposed to midrange pull-ups. They should be a shot of last resort and not much more IMO. Pretty much the lowest eFG shot in the game.
