To start off I’ve had a form of Parkinson’s disease for 23 years—- since I was 30. I was a big runner back then— although honestly not that good at all.
At 53 I’ve gone downwards on a yearly basis but every day I feel good I get on treadmill. I have a condition called orthaststic hypotension from the Parkinson’s and it’s a real btch. It makes your bp drop quite a bit while u stand. In the last 5 years it got real bad—and even three weeks I was in a wheel chair as they just couldn’t get the right formula/ combination of other remedies for me to even stand without likely falling. They removed a beta blocker I was taking and poof— I could stand! And while I was in hope that I’d be 100% gone from that side effect— no. BUT with med compression and salt— bang I can live my life and even do cardio for 20-40 minutes. My md wants me to do recumbent only but I’m not a great listener Here’s my workout 8.1 miles per hour for 1/2 mile or a little less than 4 minutes 3.5-4.1 walk for the next 1.25 miles 10 mph for .25 2 miles Done. I’ve stayed consistent now with this rate for 2 years. Not any better but also not worse. I do this 4 days a week and recumbent bike another 1-2 days for 30 min a pop. Lastly I lift weights 2 times a week for 20 mi utes. After I do any workout my bp drops into the 75-45 range! So it’s a must that I simply lay down and drink water for the same amount of time I exercise 4. I always give the effort— sometimes I shake 3/4 of a day or have nasty low bp headaches but I f workout and like watching knicks I almost never miss. I’m more at risk for pneumonia like illness and I’ve been in hospital many x once for as long as two weeks but it’s been much less with the stringent cardio and since COVID I’ve not been sick once. Exercise is better than any pill and it gives me great daily hope. I don’t live my life for a long time thinking about anything but day to day living. None of us are guaranteed anything but you can certainly help your life by eating smart and exercising!

Bump. Moved from OT forum to here, thought it was appropriate.

Briggs you might really benefit from some Wim Hof breathing
fishmike@ 4/15/2021 11:44 AM
Here's an intro:
Here's a guided session:
Here's a science guy breaking down the legitimacy (includes the cold exposure part)
What made this especially good for me is I dont lift or work out anymore. Around 40 I stopping playing baseball and dont lift weights or run because a bad shoulder and knee. I still stay loose but what I missed the most was good "good mind" and body feeling after playing ball or a good workout. I feel like I have that back with the Wim Hof breathing. Also I can hold my breath for 4-5 minutes with some work and that is really wild
Philc1@ 4/15/2021 12:33 PM
I run minimum 10 miles per week. Good for you with your workout stay strong

Glad your finding routines that boost your health while your body and abilities alter- I'm finding as I get older (40) it's like a game of chess!
Before covid I used to like swimming 4 times a week, but since the outbreak I switched to running (11miles twice week), plus 2x 7 mile walks a week, and then did some abs routine and dumbbells so I wouldn't lose strength in my upper body.
Somehow despite exercising more intensely, and for longer, I somehow gained 7lb's in a month! So had to adjust my diet. Then ended up with an inguinal hernia (not caused from the exercise but I think it was a genetic disposition as my dad had one in the same place)- not pleasant, but not the end of the world (though it will be if my intestines end up getting strangulated, or somehow descend into my balls! (a rare development, but it is meant to be agony and makes your balls swell up!). Means I've had to cut back on the dumbbells and abs stuff to the absolute minimum to avoid worsening before surgery. Now I've been vaccinated I'm hoping that means I can go back to swimming soon.
But see what I mean about it being like a game of chess?😂 Glad you seem to be getting the upper hand lately- I find exercise helps me mentally too as I can either think about stuff while doing it or get a bit of an escape. Plus you can eat more!

Way to go BRIGGS! The one thing I've accepted is that once over 50, it can take YEARS to see progress from exercise. Keep at it bro!
I'm 59, and the summer before COVID I was trying to run full court at just over 290lbs. Surprise! It was not working. I quit ball, started doing nothing but cardio and weights, 3 x a week (to keep it doable). 6 months in, I went to 4 x a week. It's been over a year and half, and although the results are not incredible, I can honestly say it's worth it. Just have to keep to it, no matter what.
I may have to look into getting my jaw wired shut at some point (eating multiple course meals after 8-9pm at night is my greatest downfall), but at least I'll be back to setting some nasty-azz Taj Gibson screens and shooting light's out iso ball this summer.

Wow, I'm speechless. Thanks for sharing BRIGGS. You are one strong dude, both physically and mentally.

It’s been tough spending near half my life ill. But like anything in life you learn to adapt and then you look to enjoy what you have. Ultimate knocks has been a great 20 year helper for me. Where you can post and talk with your internet friends about the team we love. I’m sure others feel The same way. I remember doing the draft game once from the hospital—-I was scared but the subject helped me take my mind off it. Mental and physical outlets are important to all humans

Wow, very inspiring stuff. I am a lazy bum compared to you guys. Just came back to Russia 10 days ago after having lived in LA for 11 months. I gained about 20 pounds of fat in my stomach while there. I was 220 pounds at 6'2" and type 1 diabetes. My sugar control has been always terrible. I am 40. Some complications started to develop.
My wife said "Keto or slow death" I have been on Keto for 10 days now. No exercise, and I eat as much as I want of super fatty stuff. Cream? Only 30% fat. Butter? No problem. Fried fish? I eat as much as I like. ( Fatty foods are super filling and it's impossible to overeat) As long as I eat less than 30 g of carbs per day it's all good. I lost 5 pounds in 10 days and I feel great. Lost one size in waist. My blood sugars are .... Let's just say I have never had anything even remotely close to such great numbers. Not even when I used to go to the gym 3 times a week. Or swam or played ball every other day. I used to inject 20-25 units of fast acting insulin per day and 28 units of long acting. Now I use about 5-7 units of fast acting per day and long acting hasn't changed.
If anyone here is a diabetic ( type 1 or 2) check out Keto or low-carb. It WILL change your life.

I’ve lost 28lbs since Sept removing sugars. Only Berries and Apples for fruits, no beets, no potatoes, and really a lot of fish, chicken and beef. No pork. NO grains but Oats and Millet. Did not have a drink for 3 months and only one per week now. Basically keto and Gluten free. It did a detox I did for 56 days but kept it going four months. I have introduced more Dairy and now maintaining. Ramping up workouts will keep it of. My bloodwork was “good” prior but Dr. told me it be great if I lost 20. I want to lose another 15. I have not played tennis in 18 months but start back in two weeks SLOWLY. I had two shoulder operations on my right side. I was prediabetic in my 40’s but my heart surgery seemed to retard it. We monitor that. Basically I got my BMI under 30 which over was technically obese. Covid likes big people and that too scared me. Walk at least 40 min a day if not doing cardio Rowing-spin-elliptical workout in basement. This is not a “diet”, its a lifestyle change. Low carb. Its expensive to eat non processed foods but we go out far less. My wife has been great in doing this. She does not need to at all and there are some sweets and bread in the house but I’m good otherwise. American diets are awful! Many from other places come here and get into bad habits!

Were you the guy in the basement who was doing all of that election hacking that Trump kept talking about?

A couple of years ago I lost a noticeable amount of weight making one simple adjustment. I watched a documentary on soft drinks/sugar and for a few months I cut out all drinks from my diet and just drank water with a slice of lemon to give it some favor.
I wasn't even trying to lose weight but that one adjustment cause me to unintentionally lose weight to the point that co-workers were asking me if I was trying to slim down.
