I don't believe the Knicks front office or Thibs had faith this team could be as successful as it was this year. The leap in wins is outside of all statistic norms across NBA history. I mean it's great for the team, great for the fans, great for the franchise, to see some hope. But I don't think anyone expected it.

My take is the Knicks signed a bunch of guys to short contracts to stay flexible, to see if they could trade them at the deadline for any type of asset and in the hopes that they would help the young players in the lockerroom in the mean time. And had they done this when it was clear the season was going down the tubes, then the franchise would have organically tanked. With veterans off the roster, more young players would get minutes to see how well they could play//develop while also putting the team in a better lottery situation.

The idea that the Knicks front office had a "choice" in this matter during the preseason is a strange notion.

If you can't rent your cap space for assets, then you sign useful veterans on short contracts who look trade worthy down the road so you can get something at the deadline. Bad teams in MLB do this all the time with relievers. They sign a guy in the preseason, give him innings and he proves himself a bargain with little to no commitment, then he gets traded to a contender at the deadline to help in the playoffs. In exchange, the bad team gets a prospect or two that helps their rebuild.

If you get a chance to win and seek a playoff berth, you do that. You don't find out your team can surprise you and win games and then tank it anyway. You just win as much as you can and you worry about the rest later. If it make your draft position fall, it makes it fall.

The Knicks were in a good position to organically tank this season. They just won too much for that to happen. I don't see winning games as a bad thing. Winning teams don't think like that. You tank when there's a practical PATHWAY in front of you to do just that. If it's not there, then it's not there.

Yes totally agree. The tanking talk is really weird. We were on a lottery trajectory before the season with Vegas and ESPN picking something like 22 wins. Then the team started winning. You could say the trade for DRose was what made us a playoff team but we were still winning too much to be a 22 win team before the trade. There really was no path once the season started for the Knicks to tank unless they concocted an injury to Randle.

The next season after Billups was let go they went 36-30 (.545) during the shortened lock out season. So their winning percentage was actually BETTER the season without Billups.

3) Adrian Dantley took over for George Karl after the all-star break when Karl was diagnosed with cancer. After the all-star break Melo's average shots per game and his usage rate actually dropped slightly.

4) We did not get rid of Rivers because he "didn't fit into Randle's game performance." We got rid of Rivers because he stunk most of the time when he played here except for 1.5 big games he had against Utah. Good for Rivers that's he doing well playing for a better team.

This works both ways. It's a business.

2) If the Knicks don't get that kind of offer, pick up the team option and see how things play out next season. There are reasons on both sides of coin. There are reasons why the breakout this year might hold. There are reasons why the breakout was a career year and will regress. Let's just wait and see.

3) The options will be to make an offer for a long term extension (which he takes or doesn't) or sign and trade him or he walks as a street free agent with no return.

If he plays very well and doesn't want to come back to NY, there's a good chance he can be signed and traded to another team next offseason. Might not be the most ideal to some here, but it's better than nothing.

Randle tried to play PF his first season as a Knicks, which resulted in over half the Knicksfans wanting Randle traded.
Randle played the PG for the Knicks his 2nd season and became an all-star winning the MIP award however, having Randle as the prime facilitator for 40 min per game the Knicks became weak at the PF position in games their opponents had a dominant 7 footer (Embiid, Giannis, Capela, Kat, Ayton, Jokic, Gobert).
Randle's consistent performance as the Knicks main facilitator of the ball was outstanding in the Covid-19 empty stadiums, When the Fans filled the stadium Randle's Facilitator performance became Cinderella at 12 O'clock, averaging 5 turnovers a game mostly in the 4th quarter.
The Knicks need a leadership PG, and Randle's increase trade value may be the only way to get one.
The Knicks been looking and needing a leadership PG for over two decades, one leadership PG (Jason Kidd) sign with the Knicks in 2012 but stayed for one season.

No to mention he was 40 years at that point. And now that I think about it, Kidd really wasn't even playing PG that season. He had developed into a half way decent shooter and started with Felton in the back court from what I recall.

Kidd was playing SG. Which is really great when you look at his stat line, especially during the winning streak at the end of the season.

Like I said, I remember him more for missing wide open layups at the end of that season than anything approaching "#1 PG leadership role".
He did rebound well at SG though...
