Knicks · Do you want to trade Julius Randle? (page 5)

For now, I can almost guarantee you Cade joining a long list of NBA superstars having their special nights at the Mecca of Basketball by killing the Knicks.
Well, at least we got to play the great Atlanta in the first round in 2021.
Many drafts have a generational talent, this one is a generational draft, i.e. having multiple players who will rule the league in the next 15 years. Like the LeBron-Melo-Bosh-Wade draft.
Adding a great young player to a lousy team is the best case scenario.
THEN WHAT? You still have a lousy team. It's a multi-year commitment not a one and done.
Only the Spurs have really managed to tank for a half-year, get lucky and draft Duncan, then continue winning.
Actually getting better is the most surefire way to get better.

This is not an accurate summary of my position. By the same token I could say that you want the Knicks to at best be a perennial borderline playoff mediocrity of a team, but that probably would not be accurate either.

So rather than win, make the playoffs, and begin to establish the foundation for a winning culture moving forward, your strategy would be:1) Tank the season.
2) Rely on the lottery and hope that you end up picking high enough to draft one of these "generational" talents.
3) Hope that this "generational" talent actually ends up being as good as projected, because there have been quite a few of these projected "generational" talents that weren't as good as advertised.
4) And if it doesn't work out, just rinse and repeat the tanking cycle until it does, provided there's "generational" talent in the draft, which just about every draft is projected to have. That's the rebuilding plan, right?
I don't believe the Knicks front office or Thibs had faith this team could be as successful as it was this year. The leap in wins is outside of all statistic norms across NBA history. I mean it's great for the team, great for the fans, great for the franchise, to see some hope. But I don't think anyone expected it.
My take is the Knicks signed a bunch of guys to short contracts to stay flexible, to see if they could trade them at the deadline for any type of asset and in the hopes that they would help the young players in the lockerroom in the mean time. And had they done this when it was clear the season was going down the tubes, then the franchise would have organically tanked. With veterans off the roster, more young players would get minutes to see how well they could play//develop while also putting the team in a better lottery situation.
The idea that the Knicks front office had a "choice" in this matter during the preseason is a strange notion.
If you can't rent your cap space for assets, then you sign useful veterans on short contracts who look trade worthy down the road so you can get something at the deadline. Bad teams in MLB do this all the time with relievers. They sign a guy in the preseason, give him innings and he proves himself a bargain with little to no commitment, then he gets traded to a contender at the deadline to help in the playoffs. In exchange, the bad team gets a prospect or two that helps their rebuild.
If you get a chance to win and seek a playoff berth, you do that. You don't find out your team can surprise you and win games and then tank it anyway. You just win as much as you can and you worry about the rest later. If it make your draft position fall, it makes it fall.
The Knicks were in a good position to organically tank this season. They just won too much for that to happen. I don't see winning games as a bad thing. Winning teams don't think like that. You tank when there's a practical PATHWAY in front of you to do just that. If it's not there, then it's not there.
ESOMKnicks wrote:That's true. But is it fair to say that you are willing to toss away the season we just had to be in the lottery regardless of the odds?Welpee wrote:ESOMKnicks wrote:Again, you want to rely on lottery luck to build your franchise. We've established that.

Yes totally agree. The tanking talk is really weird. We were on a lottery trajectory before the season with Vegas and ESPN picking something like 22 wins. Then the team started winning. You could say the trade for DRose was what made us a playoff team but we were still winning too much to be a 22 win team before the trade. There really was no path once the season started for the Knicks to tank unless they concocted an injury to Randle.

Yes, judging him on a bad playoff series (the first of his career) after such a big jump overall this season is basically saying we want to trade him if he's not the perfect player by now. Just silly.

Randle needs help. Want Randle to play better in these playoff games? Perhaps we should add a player around him that the opposition doesn't LOL at. Barrett? Please. Barrett is a nice little player that can't carry an offense if his life depended on it. Maybe he gets there one day, but I wouldn't bet on it. His skill set doesn't come close to that kind of player.
If we had 2 Randle's, we're still playing. Don't get rid of the only guy on this team that sniffs an all star game just because he cost you money on draftkings.
Patrick Ewing couldn't get it done in the playoffs either. Learn from history!
Thibs traded for D.Rose to put D.Rose in the Knicks starter lineup.
D.Rose refuse to be in the starter lineup. Why?
When Thibs finally talked D.Rose into getting into the starter lineup in the playoff .. no more to be said.I wonder what Randle stats would be like if he average 30 minute per game like the average NBA stars?
It won't be near the 23, 10, 6
Plus under pressure Randle has not improve his derelict 4th qtr. performance.
Randle like Melo never played the PF position for the Knicks, and both of their performances are 4th quarter losers when they receive ball on offense.
No star FA came to the Knicks having Melo always playing the PG, and no star FA will come to the Knicks having Randle always playing the PG!
Recall .. Melo ask Denver to trade him because super-star PG Billups took the ball out of his hands.
Melo and Randle have no Game down-low as a PF on offense/defense, especially in the postseason games.
I'm happy Thibs team defense & D.Rose high scoring made Randle an allstar, now that Randle receive the MIP award .. Randle's value has triple .. Trade Randle asap, or be stuck with another ball-hogging PG Melo, name Randle !!!Yeah, we all watched how Amare & Billups freeze Melo out of regular season games and the playoffs LOL
We all know Melo had something to do with the departure of PG-Billups and PG-Linsanity.
Billups never got a chance to play a whole season with the Knicks.
The Knicks STINK up the court the next season without Billups.
The feud with Billups & Melo also involved the Nuggets interim head coach who gave Melo the greenlight to run point-forward thoughout the season to get Blown-out in the first round of the playoffs, after the previous season going to the WCF under Billups.
We got rid of Rivers cause he didnt fit into Randle's game performance. Now River's a starting PG in the 2nd round of the playoff2) The Knicks were 42-40 (.512) the year Melo and Billups arrived mid-season. They went 14-14 (.500) when Melo played after the trade. The next season after Billups was let go they went 36-30 (.545) during the shortened lock out season. So their winning percentage was actually BETTER the season without Billups.
3) Adrian Dantley took over for George Karl after the all-star break when Karl was diagnosed with cancer. After the all-star break Melo's average shots per game and his usage rate actually dropped slightly.
4) We did not get rid of Rivers because he "didn't fit into Randle's game performance." We got rid of Rivers because he stunk most of the time when he played here except for 1.5 big games he had against Utah. Good for Rivers that's he doing well playing for a better team.

I know UK isn’t reflective of the entire fanbase and I’m not even saying the majority of Knicks fans want to trade him. I think the fact that there is the thought of trading him right after a bad playoff series dosent make sense and I know he isn’t untradeable but as I said before he is owed another season to prove himself.
No team should gut check trade a player impulsively after 5 bad games. That's NOT enough context.
However, the FIVE YEARS TOTAL in Randle's career before this season is plenty of context. Those FIVE YEARS and what they say is plenty enough to trade him if the RIGHT DEAL is offered.
I keep hearing some people, not all, but some repeating over and over that it's just five games. No, it's not. It's an entire career arc in context. If you only look at five games, you are pretending this entire season didn't happen. However if you only look at this season before those five games, you are pretending the five total years before it did not happen.
Neither is a good strategy but only one half of the equation is being consistently presented.
Again, I fail to understand why any of this has to be complicated
1) If the Knicks get a "Godfather" type trade offer for Randle, they should do it. Do I think that will happen? No. But if it did happen, they should get great value in a trade if it presents itself. It's NOT disloyal. Let's not pretend if Randle could get Super Max money on a contender with a deep squad today, that he wouldn't pack his bags in three minutes and be out the door. This works both ways. It's a business.
2) If the Knicks don't get that kind of offer, pick up the team option and see how things play out next season. There are reasons on both sides of coin. There are reasons why the breakout this year might hold. There are reasons why the breakout was a career year and will regress. Let's just wait and see.
3) The options will be to make an offer for a long term extension (which he takes or doesn't) or sign and trade him or he walks as a street free agent with no return.
If he plays very well and doesn't want to come back to NY, there's a good chance he can be signed and traded to another team next offseason. Might not be the most ideal to some here, but it's better than nothing.
This "disloyalty" shit is nonsense. No one is trading Steph Curry. You know why? He plays and produces in a way where no franchise would want to trade him. If Randle didn't want to risk ever being traded, then play in a way where it's insane for a franchise to think about trading you. I'm weary of fans demanding other fans kiss a player's ass because he "worked so hard" You are supposed to work your motherfucking ass off in professional sports. That's the job. That's your duty to yourself, your career, your integrity and to your team. No "Gold Stars" for shit you are supposed to do in the first place.
Randle wanted the max possible this offseason? Well, he should have played like this during his first season as a Knick. Then most of the questions would be erased now. Did he play like that? No, his first season was pure ass for this team.
No one gives you jack shit. Your play EARNS YOU all the leverage and power you have in this league. It's NOT disloyal to treat a player like he's potentially disposable if he plays in a way where he's actually potentially disposable. It's not like the Knicks franchise is not disposable to Randle if he had better options on the table. It works BOTH WAYS.
"You keep what you kill."
That's not just true in the NBA alone. That wasn't just true for me in the NFL. It's true in all of life for all men period.

Whether I agree with it or not, THIS post is a reasonable opinion. You had no concerns about whether it was true or not, as long as it disparaged Melo you were good posting it.

I assuming you're write fiction as your full time job?
I find Kemet's writing riveting, filled with flawed logic and classic Melohate pathos.
My Bad .. I type to fast and dont re-edit (Melo in the FINALS LOL).
I should hav known I would wake-up the super Melo fans.
Randle played PF for the Lakers for 4 yrs which resulted in no-resigning.
Randle played PF for the Pelicans for 1 yr which resulted in no-resigning.
Randle tried to play PF his first season as a Knicks, which resulted in over half the Knicksfans wanting Randle traded.
Randle played the PG for the Knicks his 2nd season and became an all-star winning the MIP award however, having Randle as the prime facilitator for 40 min per game the Knicks became weak at the PF position in games their opponents had a dominant 7 footer (Embiid, Giannis, Capela, Kat, Ayton, Jokic, Gobert).
Randle's consistent performance as the Knicks main facilitator of the ball was outstanding in the Covid-19 empty stadiums, When the Fans filled the stadium Randle's Facilitator performance became Cinderella at 12 O'clock, averaging 5 turnovers a game mostly in the 4th quarter.
The Knicks need a leadership PG, and Randle's increase trade value may be the only way to get one.
The Knicks been looking and needing a leadership PG for over two decades, one leadership PG (Jason Kidd) sign with the Knicks in 2012 but stayed for one season.TripleThreat said it well !!!
Whether I agree with it or not, THIS post is a reasonable opinion. My main problem with the other stuff you posted was that it was factually not true and you were just throwing crap out there because you evidently dislike Melo and it supported that narrative. You had no concerns about whether it was true or not, as long as it disparaged Melo you were good posting it.
And the hits just keep coming. Now we know Melo chased only leadership PG Jason Kidd (who also was the can-no-make-layup PG) out after only one season. Of course, one leadership PG Kidd had retired before that one season was over, but just didn't tell anyone.

Right. Kidd played mostly at shooting guard that season
Kidd was playing SG. Which is really great when you look at his stat line, especially during the winning streak at the end of the season.
Like I said, I remember him more for missing wide open layups at the end of that season than anything approaching "#1 PG leadership role".
He did rebound well at SG though...
Kidd's impact on that season is a favorite for Melohating revisionists who also like to point out the huge role Camby played as well that season. While not playing.
